So I was driving to the states today with my frd's rental car. It was in the morning with minimal traffic and I was driving around 85 Miles /h. Without noticing the undercop car next 2 lanes, he pulled me over right away and charged me excessive speeding.

Here is my question/concern, I know its best for me to pay the 210 US fine. But what is worse situation that could happen? They said if they pulled me over if im driving in the states again, it will become a criminal offense and my license will get suspended. Any drivers here with previous experiences that are similar? Of course i wont go thru the hassle of going to the court in US and stuff. But should I just leave it? Will they mail crap to my house here?! Like warning letters.

It seems whenever this question comes up its always a friend of a friend that got detained.

Either way I wouldnt pay it. Keep the money in Canada. Dont give the US government anything.

my buddy just went through this hell. he thought he paid the ticket, payment didnt go through, plate was tagged, state trooper pulled him over, arrested him, put him in the back of the car, sat on the radio with dispatch for 20 mins, eventually let him go, but wasnt allowed to drive in the states, had to have his gf drive the car back over the border to vancouver where he had to call in to pay the ticket again and get the BS sorted out and i believe all is well and sorted out, but just pay the ticket right away and get it over with.

Look behind the ticket to see if there is a number you can call to ask questions on payment of the ticket. If not, make a copy of your payment.

I had this happen to me earlier this year. I went down to the courthouse they stated on the back and disputed it for a lower amount.

Basically the cop told me I either dispute it or pay it, if I didn't I wouldn't be allowed in the country.

Only if your friend will NEVER EVER EVER set foot on US soil. My friend was transferring planes in DC and was detained by Customs due to an unpaid speeding ticket. He obviously missed his plane over a trivial $xxx which he had decided not to pay x years ago.
Save yourself the hassle, and more importantly your friend's.

Yeah, you can still go to the States if you get a ticket there. You just can't drive in the state that you got the ticket in if you don't pay it. I work with people who have gotten tickets and they're still travelling to the US ;)

You make it payable to the district court, so in this case, Skagit.

They dont detain you at the border, don't know where you guys get that. Only thing is if you fail to pay, you're supposed to show up in court, when you don't they apparently put out a warrant for ur arrest and/or ban you from driving there. So... if you get pulled over again in the same state, they can impound the car ur in and throw u in jail until u pay up. I have not tested that theory as i havent got pulled over again in a state where i had an outstanding ticket. I had an outstanding ticket in Oregon so I'm banned from driving there, but this time I was in Tenessee and got pulled over again for speeding, but either nothing showed up in regards to my Oregon ticket or they didn't care, as the officer didnt mention anything about it nor was i thrown in jail. Now state to state relationships in regards to traffic tickets vary dependent on the state, so maybe if i get pulled over in washington and have an Oregon outstanding ticket, i might get jailed, who knows.

One more thing is after a certain period of time, you might find a local vancouver collections agency like Wiggins would buy out your US outstanding ticket and try to collect from you. When that happens, it is said that technically you no longer have a ban in driving there nor a record of unpaid ticket, since Wiggins paid it for you (but now is trying to collect from you). So therefore you can drive there, get pulled over again and not have to worry about going to jail. Again this isn't confirmed or tested, however, a friend of mine had that happen in washington where he didnt pay his speeding ticket, 5 years later Wiggins sent him a letter about the collection, then after he got that notice he was pulled over AGAIN in washington, but they no longer had a record of unpaid ticket nor did he go to jail. In the end, you be the verdict if this is true or not. But getting detained at the border for unpaid ticket? I doubt that will happen.

I paid all my Florida tickets as it's such a nice state and chance are i'll be going down there again within the next 10 years, but for places like Ohio or Nebraska? no way I'm paying those haha. If you say you dont have cash, they'll follow you to an ATM for you to withdraw cash. HAHA that's so sketchy, but i guess they know you're not going to pay up otherwise.

You pay the court at the bottom.

Make sure you send it REGISTERED MAIL, that way they have to sign for it! (as mail seems to uh get lost) I think it also gets there faster.

Make sure you send a US Fund Bank Draft (any bank can do that), that way theres no chance of it bouncing and you have proof of it.

Make COPIES of the ticket before you send it, keep the draft and registered mail receipts. Registered mail can also be tracked via the internet!

Remember if you decide to fight it, you have to drive all the way back down to their court, which is A. fuel $ and B. their schedule (so could mean a work day, minus pay)

If you get pulled over in that state, or if you have one in Washington and they have issued a warrant for your arrest you will be detained by sherrifs at the border.

136km/h is not fast at all for a 3 lanes+ (per direction) hwy.

I can't recall a single day in the past 3 years I didn't go past 130km/h. (i live in toronto and take hwy to and from work everyday) Speed limit is 100km/h, traffic is at least 120km/h+.


Back on topic. Did the cop get your citizenship ID? If not, just use your citizenship ID when you cross the border. If they ask you for driver license, tell them you don't have one?

Or go to the MTO and tell them you lost your license so they can issue u a new one? (with new license #?)

Being pulled over for speeding does not validate a warrant. Through these freedoms of the US Bill of Rights, I don't see how an officer can force you to pay on the spot.

Just pay the fine. It will save you a lot of trouble. If you can afford to drive down to the state, then you should be able to afford a 210 USD fine.

My brother got a ticket in Oregon 2 years ago.
Did not pay it.
Tried to go to Seattle the other month. Detained at boarder. A cop came, gave him another ticket for driving without a license ( since he didn't pay the ticket, his license got revoked ). And gave him a court date.
Cop said he was being nice and could've thrown him in jail.

In court public defender asked the judge if he could just pay for the tickets and a fine and not go to jail for 6 months. Judged agreed.

Same happened to a co-worker of mine. Had to pay the ticket on the spot / drive to and ATM. The thing is, you don't really want to argue with an American cop, especially when you're in the wrong ;)
