kudos on doing your own work. a few months ago i sucked it up and borrowed a friend's garage and tried to do it on my own... and i forgot to open up the oil cap before removing the drain screw, so i had the oil tray in the wrong location under the car when i realized the cap was still screwed on... took me longer to clean up the aftermath than it was to do the oil change and i think my friend dosen't want to see me again. now i remember why i don't want to work on my car anymore :(

you're lucky your filter is up top... my fsi is still at the bottom where it pukes all over me

You missed one really minor step Roastpuff. You should always take the engine oil filler cap off when you do an oil change. Oh and who needs oil filter wrenches when you got strong arms. ;)

Oops - I did do that, though. :D Just didn't write it up.

There's absolutely no space to put my hand in there... clearance is very tight.

Pricing is rumored to start around 35k USD... I hope its cheaper than the STi & EVO up here.

Just know that NO ONE locally has the tools to flash these cars yet... additional hardware is required to be installed and those are slow off of the production line... APR is the only company that has this done for right now and to be quite honest are the best of the tuners out there (especially for new tech and customer service) so go with them even if you have to wait!

Hit up Shift, RPI or Clarkdale for help with APR... All three are great companies to deal with!

Latest "rumors" say that final negotiations are taking place and decision will likely come down in the next two weeks. Things look pretty solid for both 2-door and 4-door with the choice of six-speed manual or six-speed DSG. In other words nearly everyone should be happy.

I'd also look for pricing around the same price as the outgoing Golf V model. Production would start at the end of this year with cars available 1st quarter of 2011.

We'll see in a few more weeks.

- jamie

Looks like the time of reckoning has come... If they price the Golf-R the same as the outgoing R32, that would put it to roughly 35k USD fully loaded.

Hm, I'm going to go check on this. My main problem with Clarkdale is that they're super hard to get ahold of without actually going into the dealership.

^Yes, US only..

This asian sales guy at Clarkdale told me to stop dreaming, and that the R will never come to Canada. :(
With that being said, I'm ready to place an order down south. I just hope the prices are comparable to the MK5 R32.

After reading all the UK reviews it should absolutely blow the R32 out of the water, better handling, fuel economy, more power and less weight.

I'm also ready to jump onto the Golf-R bandwagon in the states, called to Seattle and Portland, none of them are willing to sell to Canadians.

@too_slow - Where are you going to get yours ?

In other VW news the poor man's A5 might be getting the poor man's S version:

Curious to hear if any of you had Mexico built VW's and if they had any problems ?

i'm reluctant to buy from the US because vw canada will no longer honor US warranties for current and newer vw models :(

according to consumer reports, mexican-built vw's generally have better reliability (ie. average to better than average depending on model) than those built elsewhere.

My MK4 20AE was Brazillian made, and it has been bulletproof. No interior rattling (mind you, my car only had 4000kms when i bought it, and in the 3 years I owned it I only took it up to 11k)..

My Mk2 (16v) and MK3 (8v) had no drivability/reliability issues. The A/C compressor did die after 10 yrs (my mom bought it brand new in 1992, I bought it from her in 2001) on the 16v. I never had a leaking sunroof, or an exploding heater core like what others have reported.

With regards to bringing the R here, I have a cousin that lives in Redmond.. So I'll have to get the car in his name, and then eventually transfer the title over.. :D

With the Mexico vs Germany thing.. On the Mk4 1.8Ts for instance, the German made models had the same problems as the Brazil/Mexican made models : window regulators, coilpacks, brake light switch.. According to the whoretex, the soft-touch materials that were found on the early Mk4s were peeling (I have personally witnessed this on my german made Mk4 GTI).. My Brazillian made model did not have the soft touch material - therefore, no peeling issues.

150whp, and then with the 25% correction factor as per RG instructions it comes out to be 200hp crank. So stock hp, basically. I was hoping for more but not everyone gets factory freaks.

I think if you want a reading that is a bit more optimistic (IIRC) is a Dynojet dyno...

I'm going to eventually switch them with the VW OEM Euro LED lights or the R20 (Golf R) taillights. The R taillights are smoked, while the regular ones are not.

You've had this car for awhile now what are your long term impressions of it so far ?

I love it!

Interior is great, very comfortable for long rides (Whistler twice, Pitt Meadows once, Abbotsford twice). The seats hug you wonderfully, and the leather is much better than the typical Japanese leather I'm used to. Stock radio is awesome, sounds amazing. Quiet when at cruising speeds, and always feels stable on the highway - but not sluggish.

200hp is a lot of power in a small car like this, and the gobs of torque means that it's faster than you realize around town - I get on the gas, and I zoom past 60km/h faster than I realize, haha. There's no need to boot this car around, very responsive. I don't know what it'll be like when chipped... definitely something to look forward to.

Handling is great, not a lot of body roll and always planted and sure, even on bumpy roads. Love the steering, it's deliberate but not slow, with lots of feedback. On the autocross track the car had pretty high limits, and the XDS really helps with eliminating understeer during tight corners. You can get oversteer with this car, something I found out on the way to the Autowerkes open day. ;) Wet road + fast U-turn ftw. :haha:

Fuel efficiency isn't bad considering I'm pretty lead-footed. About 500-550km per tank, 55L of 91 octane.

Could use some more space, but that would mean that the car needs to get bigger which I don't really want to happen. Touchscreen interface needs to speed up a bit, and more logical controls for navigating folder structures. Also, the hatchback aerodynamics means that the rear gets dirty so fast it's not even funny.

Today I swapped cars with a friend who has a stock MkVI, because he wanted to check out the APR Stage 1 on my car. He has 18" Huffs, I have 18" TD Pro Race 1.2's which are much lighter (approx 9lbs per wheel). Let me tell you, the APR tune makes it very hard for me to keep up with him (in my car!), even when flooring the stock car. Bus lengths! Apparently he said he wasn't even really trying to lose me...

I nearly had an oopsie as I was braking behind him; the heavier Huffs make for longer, slower braking response, and I had to stand on the pedal at lot more than I was expecting. Not a good thing, almost slamming into your own car with another guy's car with you behind the wheel. Plus, the steering wheel felt mushier and less connected. On the other side, the ride was a little better and the car was a little quieter. (Might have been the newer tires... my Dunlops were used by another friend for 5-6k miles before he sold them to me cheap)

Considering I'm running the stock Dunlop A/S tires, and he was too, I have to conclude that lighter wheels were the determining factor in the braking difference, all things being equal between the two cars - ceteris paribus, so to speak.

It's a flop between feeling terrible to see your car pulling away effortlessly from you with an extra guy on board (and you being unable to keep up), and feeling good that your car can indeed do such a thing.

FYI the MK6 is only a re-skinned MK5, same suspension and powertrain.

also, the mk6 gti uses a TSI engine. mk5's gti's all had FSI motors with the exception of some of the late 2009's.

having finally been in an mk6, i have to say all that changes are worth it in comparsion to my old mk5... it's quieter, more solid feeling (if that is possible), and the interior styling is a step up, but the choice of materials is a small step down IMO. as much as i like it... i'm not going to be trading up anytime soon (too poor)

roastpuff: getting rid of my stock dunlops was one of the best things i did with the car... stock sucks.
