These pilots are just nuts. You dont apply to get into this. They ask you to join. There are 12 pilots per year and these guys are the best in the world.
Another link if you wanna read up on this
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/men/article4315284.ece
The 12 elite pilots have to race the small one-seater planes along a special course as low as 30ft off the ground, making sharp, banked turns, barrel rolls and loop-the-loops to fly between special inflatable obstacles called pylons, and do it all in the quickest time.
They hit speeds approaching 300mph, and experience up to 10Gs, which is equal to pressure 10 times their own body weight pushing down on them.
The guys are all extremely experienced pilots from all over the world. They have years of training, experience and gruelling fitness regimes to keep their minds and bodies in the right shape to deal with such flying.
wow thats fucking insane!
can you imagine them with jets? :haha:

I bet if they raced a jet vs these planes in that course these planes would actually beat them.

When I first saw this on TV, I thought the pylons were fixed, and wondered what would happen if there was a collision! :lol

Exactly. I'd compare it to a Viper racing a S2000. Sure, the Dodge has way more power, but the Honda is much more nimble.

Not only that but you are limited by reaction time and g-forces.
Its not just a matter of getting through the course. You have to keep the plane as flat as possible while going through the pylon things.
And they are already having issues with g-forces. They are pulling 10-11 g's at some points. If a "normal" person was in the plane they would black out.

I might be wrong but dont they have to have a certain wing below the line?? I know they have to be flat when they get to the finish and a couple other pylons, But I think most of the time they have to have a certain wing under this line correct??? I know sometimes when they have a chicane course (left to right) the pilot has to have his left wing down before the pylong then have his right wing down for the next set? I know my wording is kinda f*** but i dont know the proper terms for this... I like to watch this once in awhile when I have nothing else to watch.

If you wanna be competitive and make the podium you are gonna pull at least 10 g's..
They have a rule that they cant pull more then 12. From time to time someone gets disqualified for going over 12 g's

it's not much different from f1 actually (in terms of getting into it) .. you need money to get started, experience and talent to become 'good at it' and then more money (read: millions) to get competitive on the top levels. Not to mention to have to be suuuuuper fit.
I done a bit of proper aerobatics in different airplanes over the years but nothing comes close to these guys. Even our fighter pilots do not get as much experience pulling that kind of G, because they only fly 100 hours a year give or take, and aren't always pulling G. These RedBull guys fly 100 hours a month and everything they do involves pulling G!

http://jalopnik.com/5518815/first-red-bull-air-racer-crash
First crash in Red Bull history.
Kindlemann was knocked unconscious during the accident and would have drowned if it wasn't for the Air Race's crack emergency response team, which had divers in the water with the crashed plane in under a minute. Kindlemann only suffered whiplash injuries in the crash. At least when the wheels explode off your formula one car, you don't face the risk of drowning.
That is crazy how fast the ERT was at the scene and in the water..

Heres another feat with redbull pilots:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zok7LltWU0E
A fighter jet couldn't turn tight enough to maneouver through those courses. They also fly way too fast. Those planes are specially built for "stunt" flying. The G limits of Canadian F18's is around 7.33G, those guys are pulling 10G+. An F18 would overstress and come apart if it tried to pull that, pretty crazy.

The chicane would be my guess... They are most likely pulling almost the same G's as the Quattro but they gotta set up to go through the gate while doing that.. I'm not sure if they are G limited for the chicane either.. I know with the quattro they are limited to 12 g's.. some pilots get disqualified for going over :eek2:

imo F1 is harder to get into
i'm sure alot of Pilots who are not involved in this could jump into one of these planes and at least place in the standings
put a Nascar or Indy car driver in an F1 car and they cant even make it a couple laps competitively

I like the Reno Air Races...
Skip to 1:00 to miss all the crap at the beginning.
The jets are kinda cool, but nothing beats 500mph in a piston powered WWII plane.
