I don't have opinions to offer for KEF or Onkyo, but I would definitely stay away from Bose (http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html).

^ after doing a whole day researching, i think most ppl said bose is overpriced, but it just sounds so good when you test them at best buy ...

anyways, i open to alot of options now, since i've searched around, and see jamo , klipsch etc etc...i just want a good system, without going over 1000...this is so frustrating being a noob

I would personally go for a Onkyo receiver with a pair of decent bookshell speaker, and 2 satellite rears.

Z5500 does the job for me @ 179, but if I am looking for a long term system, receiver + speakers all the way for the upgardability.

my dad actually has a set of both jamo and klipsch speakers. i believe jamo is now owned by klipsch too. they sound great to me but not being an audiophile, i couldn't really give you much of an opinion.

If you're serious about home theatre, it's best to avoid systems like the Logitech Z5500 or the KEF system. And while it's easy to admit that BOSE speakers look nice, they lack mid-range and are overpriced for what they are.

If you want a system that looks close to what Bose has (small size, glossy finish), but actually sounds good, I would recommend the Energy Take Classic 5.1 system. Although Future Shop no longer carries the system on their website, you never know what you might find in a store. I have the Energy C50s (which are very close to the Take Classics with the same subwoofer) and they sound pretty decent. They are highly rated on AVSForums, Amazon, and about any other website dedicated to home theatre. Check out the review in Sound and Vision magazine: http://www.soundandvisionmag.com/features/2821/energy-take-classic-home-theater-system.html

In terms of a receiver, it comes down to what type of equipment you have. Do you have a lot of HDMI devices? Do you need to decode the hi-def audio codecs? In terms of brands, I would stick to Onkyo, Yamaha, and Marantz.

^i think i have decided on the onkyo receiver, but why not the kef speakers? is there a reason why u would tell me to stay away from them?

so right now, its NO to bose and NO to logitech...:)

I did a little bit of digging into the KEFs and they seem decent, though a little overpriced. To me, they resembled computer-type speakers (like the Logitechs) that would not provide enough clarity or punch in the low end.

I'm a little biased towards Energy - my dad had a few of their speakers in his day and they were always decent speakers for the price.

The KEF's aren't bad but it's not great for music. It lacks a few mid tones and such. But for watching movies it's Fantastic. I'm not saying that it's a bad system. Not at all! It's great overall. I got mine at A & B sound when they were doing the clearance for 499. :D I'd personally opt for the 2005.3s They are a bit better. :) Oh one more thing, I believe the KEF's run on Banana Plugs. You can make them yourself. Just buy the plugs and the copper wires. :)

these are great speakers, excellent range, rates very high for speaker packages. I would certainly pick this over the KEF's u were looking at without hesitation, just pick up a subwoofer and you're good to go

with those speakers along with the onkyo receiver and a extra sub, im going well past 1g including taxes.

reason im getting the kef's and onkyo at a bundle price is b/c im getting a hookup, so basically normally 1600 for 850.

thanks guys, i'll let you guys know how thise set up goes next week :)

My honest option I would not get speakers with 3 inch drivers. I would look at some low end Paradigm speakers They should be close to your budget. Or maybe used:
