Anyone know where to find free peer-to-peer reviewed journals? Basically academic research and studies people have written about on various things.

http://cufts2.lib.sfu.ca/CRDB/BVAS/
also, http://www.lib.sfu.ca/ is the SFU homepage, (look at the right side for journals).
If you attend a school and you have a login you can access more academic journals like academic search elite.

most peer reviewed journals will cost you if you are not a student currently in school.
If you are, just go to your library's website and start from there.

^You need to access them through your library's portals.
I am not sure how UBC works, but when I was attending SFU a few years back, I would log on my account, go to library databases, search for the journals, and access them by direct link provided by the library database.

While connected to your UBC VPN, are you searching Pubmed/EBSCO/etc from the library website?
i.e. going directly to http://toby.library.ubc.ca/resources/onlinelist.cfm, looking for major databases, then connecting from there. Depending on the types of articles, EBSCO, Cinahl, Metalib are good databases to use, and make sure to set parameters for the search for peer reviewed and full text.
