restart? reinstall driver for keyboard?
change a new keyboard? No, it's because he accidentally changed the keyboard language from Canada - US English to either Canada - Multilingual or Canada - French ...

To cure it:

Right-click the keyboard icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen > select Settings > Remove Canadian French and Canadian Multilingual Standard as keyboard language options > Click Apply > Click the Language Bar tab > check Hidden > click OK

ha nevermind once again. settings/language/keyboard and languages/change keyboards/language bar tab and show it. Use the language bar now that it is on the desktop and switch to US mode.

If you delete the french keyboard option, it will never happen again.

left ctrl + shift is the hotkey to swap languages, just select the window that's all screwy and hit that, might have to do it a few times. why they picked a setup that can so easily be hit by accident is beyond me.
