: Shittiest flight ever

So I was flying from LA to Vancouver with Air Canada. We took off and 20 minutes into the flight black smoke started to come out and we dropped to a much lower altitude. 5 mins later of people whispering the captain finally goes on the PA and says we have to turn around and land back in LA.. "we'll be there in 20 minutes but it seems the engines are fine". We keep lowering in altitude and I'm questioning whether or not the captain is jerking our chains to prevent panic. Engines seemed to be at a quiet whisper compared to usually the loud noise. As we approach the airport we all see tons of blue and red lights approaching..

needless to say we landed, got rushed by emergency vehicles and escorted into the waiting lounge at the airport. 45 mins later they tell us that grease in one of the ovens caught on fire and that's what the black smoke was.... FUN!

did i mention i already had a phobia of flying prior to this and have to take ativan to fly as is?

so i loaded up on ativan, a few drinks and took another plane back to vancouver an hour later

Props to the crew for getting it down safely... Stop panicing about flights, shit happens. The reason you dropped in altitude is the fact that they probably depressurized the aircraft to get rid of the smoke. They can't stay at a high altitude or you will pass out pretty quickly.. The reason the engines seems quieter was because they weren't working as hard... you were descending, they were most likely at idle!

Did AC give you, the passengers, any sort of freebies? Like drink/food vouchers? My guess is no. On a side note, I flew in from TO to Vancouver Sat night. Our flight was delayed because the plane was delayed from London. Because of the hour delay, they offered all passengers a free cocktail which was quite shocking.

enteratainment system was down for the flight... 10 hour flight
i think it was 5% maybe 10% DC coupon for any AC flight.

AC has the worst inflight system. No map feature on most flights, no games, updates are too slow but their movie selection is decent. Also the system itself has way too many issues. During our flight the system had to be rebooted 3 times. I still remember reading stories about how AC had to keep a tech on flights from Sydney - Vancouver because the system had so many issues.

Had a similar experience once in Australia, flying from Brisbane to Cairns (2h flight). All the TVs and lights flickered out about 1h (I'm guessing just before halfway) into the flight, and the captain says all is well, of course. 5 mins later, the pilot says we're turning back to Brisbane, and promptly does a 180. It was an eerie and quiet flight going all the way back, and yeah, a lot people thought it was GG for all of us. It was a really hard landing back at Brisbane, but amazingly the flight crew all played it cool. Thank goodness the batteries were able to last the duration of the trip or we would've been a crater.

The free alcohol was offered on the Toronto - Vancouver flight because the plane we were on, the A330, was delayed coming in from London. AC basically shuttles the plane back from Toronto so they can use it on the Vancouver - Seoul route.

why do you need a map on a plane. you already know where your going + ur not even doing the flying.

i rmb last year i had a flight were some guy was complaining loudly how his monitor didnt have the map feature and was questioning where he was going to -_-

Which AC plane were you flying? When I fly overseas, I enjoy AC the most. I have flown EVA Air, Cathay, United and AC and AC by far has the best in flight entertainment. I think it just depends on which type of plane you get, airbus or boeing.

airbus or boeing

Boeing 777-300 from cathay

I remember a recent AC flight I had back from europe.. Prolly was london... Anyways it was an older plane with the new tv screens and such.. Sooo funny becuase it was pretty new on the plane (only a month old) and it lagged soo much that if you over lagged it(thats right over lagg) it would freeze and not work for the rest of the flight unless the crew were to reset the whole system which takes 30 mins to complete.. So while I was being patient watching movies and whatnot... The elderly people who dont have patience and kept pressing buttons got soo pissed off they wanted some kind of freebie... LOL good times...

Worse flight I had was one Christmas flight from San Fran back to Vancouver.

On top of the snow delays of 3 hours, the flight was delayed on the ground for almost another 2 hours, because some lady had a panic attack JUST before the flight was about to leave, and insisted on leaving the plane. The crew let her leave, but the worse part is that they needed to find and unload her luggage cuz of safety reasons. Trying to find the luggage took forever.

I don't really like flying, but I'm not scared to fly really

I always look to whoever I'm travelling with and say hey, either were gonna make it and have a good trip, or well die a quick, although terrifying death :)

My wife hates to fly, and I tell her, "it's okay, you're not going anywhere before it's your time," and she says, "yeah, but what if it's the pilot's time??" Could you imagine showing up at the pearly gates and St. Peter says, "you're not suppose to be here, what are you doing here?" and you say, "well, I'm with HIM!"

Yes. I hate EnRoute. No navi sucks. No free meals within Canada flight legs sucks. Their economy food sucks. Their business food sucks.
If you ever have a chance, fly Air New Zealand. Simply amazing. Their economy meal's dessert alone was a mix of 4 different melons in a large bowl.

They show it in business class just after takeoff for long haul. Well, at least they did several months ago.

at least your landing gear came out when it was supposed to. I flew back from Hawaii and the fucking plane's wheels wouldn't come out when we were gonna land.

Nothing like seeing a runway full of fucking firetrucks and amblances waiting for you at night.

yah, i watched it live on the news. they circled for liek 3 hrs to burn off fuel and went for the landing. I was fking holding my breath expecting a spectacular explosion.

but nope the wheels held fo SOoooo long then they blew in a burst of flame. I totally expected the landing geat to snap like a twig.

but NO! the pilot held it and kept that fucker straight!

unbelieveable!

I actually jumped up and cheered! the newsroom crew also did lol!

F*ck I hate flying but travel so much for business it's ridiculous. I'm above 100K miles for the year and still have one South America to China trip to go... The shitties flying is always across the caribean flying into or out of LatAm. Always mad turbulence in this belt.

I will say that United is the best NA Airline in my opinion. Especially their intercontinetal 777 service. Air Canada is not bad as well... Their T.O to Lima service in refurbished 767's with the new interior (LED lights etc.) is nice. Too bad their FAs are grosse.

RTS
10-07-2009, 08:08 PM
And the one time I thought I was actually going to die was YVR to Varadero in 07'. Just after takeoff the plane went through the WORST turbulence I have ever felt. Not just up dowm but sideways as well... scary shit. vodka is good to put you at ease...
