this is the BEST place to buy currency!

http://www.vbce.ca/

they have 3 offices.
i guarantee there rates are better than what staff get at their respective banks!
for the guy who exchanged 3k, this would be very significant... not so much if you're exchanging small values.

no they're actually not the best, unless you want to deal in cash.

If you're willing to deal in bankdrafts and or bank transfers there are better places that will beat whatever VBE is offering. Of course these places are not for small fish who want to just do a few grand. If you have 10 grand or more you want to exchange, let me know I'll refer you to a better place than VBE.

NEVER FUCKING GO TO BANKS TO EXCHANGE YOUR MONEY.

unless of course you're exchanging 500grand or more and or you have very close relations with your bank. otherwise the bank will rip your fucking ass off and jew you to death.

ok my mistake then? let me clarify...
VBE is probably One of the Best places to exchange money.
if your place is min. 10k to exchange then i think VBE is pretty darn good. imo.

and afaik, VBE is just a fraction more than market rate? so I don't see how it can get better than that..

We are showing the actual exchange rates whereas the banks have an altered exchange rate so that they can get some profit when you exchange as a "service charge" type deal.

Hmmm

They are buying at 1.029000 (USD to CAN) (1.029 CAN is for 1 dollar USD)
And they are selling at 1.056000 (CAN to USD) (so for 1.056 CAN is 1 dollar USD)

Do you see the difference there? That is the mark up from the real market.

Real market is at 1.0424 (USD to CAN) and 0.9593 (CAN to USD)

I guess it depends on location.

The one I usually go to is on the one on Granville. Though I know the manager in the downtown location. I have never asked for something special though as I have never really needed the better rate (usually do like 1k transfers or less) so it isn't necessary.

But the special thing is of course just a better rate. How much better? I'm not too sure, you can of course call the line and ask.

Actually if you are exchanging anything over 3K, just call around for rates, take the best rate (say if it's 0.954) and add a lil bit more (say 0.950) and hit up your bank, in my case with RBC, they would match or even beat that rate most of the time.

In FOREX, it's all about volume, the more you have, the better rate you would get. Big banks tend to exchange a much larger sum in a day than what an exchange house would do in a week or even month. Thus, they could offer better rate if they decide to do so.

Not really, depends on how you want to play it. But it usually only make sense if you go big. I haven't met any1 in Forex having fund less than 300K

But Forex is really good for people who do much int'l businesses.

For example, an importer that I know invests heavily in Forex. Since he receive his payment in different currency from time to time, and he just pour most of non-flowing cash into forex. His listings on different currency can value anywhere from a few hundred bucks worth to almost a mil.

Meh, pretty much everything in USA costs about 20-30% less than over here at this point, even with taxes. Even back then when it was 0.9, everything was still much cheaper in the States.

Certain items have an even worse discrepancy right now. Bought a kb/mouse combo online for $92USD (tax free) last week. Same product off a Canadian website was like $138CAD before taxes, or $155 taxes in.

I'm surprised there isn't that mad rush to import cars all over again.

from my understanding, ur converting 10gs to US right now since the rate is close or will be at par so your profit comes in when you ride and wait for the US to go up again. once it hits the all time high again your pretty much almost doubling your money on the rate. If i decide to do something like this, where would i do it and what would i need to do? Do i need to make a US savings account?

freakshow

yea i need a suggestion for another place to exchange besides the banks :0In Richmond I always compare between two places:

http://Kingmark.ca and http://www.vbce.ca/

from my understanding, ur converting 10gs to US right now since the rate is close or will be at par so your profit comes in when you ride and wait for the US to go up again. once it hits the all time high again your pretty much almost doubling your money on the rate. If i decide to do something like this, where would i do it and what would i need to do? Do i need to make a US savings account? You wouldn't double your money, even if the USD went fairly high again.
All you need is a USD account and a CAD account. It's not a simple flip though, you may need to wait a bit of time to get your money back.

eg.
Let's generalize and say that an exchange place will always exchange at .02 + or - depending on if you're buying or selling.

With rough numbers, lets say the market is at par (1.0), and you change CAD$10K to USD @ 1.02 (rate +.02), which is USD$9803.92.

Now you need to wait until the market is at 1.04 so that you can change it back, and you'll just break even: USD$9803.92 @ 1.02 = CAD$10K

So to make any profit, let's say you could change it back at 1.04, which would be CAD$10196.08 ($196 profit), you essentially had to wait for the market to go all the way from 1.0 to 1.06.

*Disclaimer.. I'm a total noob.. so.. please correct me if any of this is wrong.

haymura
03-17-2010, 10:14 AM

Just go to a bank. the difference in their commission is negligible..

At BMO, their exchange rates are 1c on the dollar more than VBCE. I'm sure most banks are probably around the same. (so if VBCE sell rate is 1.0200, then BMO will sell for 1.0300). Since I usually only buy $500 at a time, it's only $5 more. Not exactly enough to make the trek to VBCE worthwhile. VBCE needs to open a location in Metro...or at least somewhere in Burnaby...

if you have at least 3 grand to exchange and not in cash (meaning you have accounts in both currencies), contact me, only if you're serious, otherwise fuck off don't waste my time.

I can get you a better deal than VBE or the bank or whereever the hell you go.

don't bother contacting me if you don't have at least 3000 dollars.

don't bother contacting me if you plan on giving me or expecting me to give you cash. bank transfers, drafts and certified cheques only.

vancouver boullion is good

but if u have a friend who works at a bank, they can get you a discount staff rate, which is 1 to 1 to the exchange rate ;-)

^
Are you serious? My friend works really high up in one of the big banks and I remember him telling me, he can't get market rates.

^you get close to market rates..better than all the exchange places at the very least

no it's not 1 to 1. it's more like 1 to 1.002 or something rather.

SOME exchange places can beat that rate, but only for baller clients, if you're hooked up, or if they just want your business. I recall a client recently getting charged a spread of .0005 (yeah three 0's). but then again he was doing 1.5m dollars. don't expect to get anywhere close to the actual market rate unless you're doing large amounts. i mean large amounts.

yes money wire is okay, but there is a wiring fee (which is not worth it for 3g)

just exchange canadian to euro. if you go cad to US then US to euro, you'll be paying two spreads instead of one.

haha yup my gf works a lower level job at bmo. They get staff rates, which are equivalent to the exchange rate. The other good thing is they can get you specific things - like I wanted a lotta 1's, so she got me 50 1's. Harder to get that otherwise!

With that said, the staff rate is for THEM. So if u ask your friend to get it for you, he'd have to pretend it's for himself haha (i think). They get all sorts of discounted goodies - insurance and travel insurance for employees/family members too

Absolutely. Those buggers definitely don't want you to pay via credit card. Each time I choose that option, a window pops up trying to convince you not to use credit card. actually with paypal you have a few options..the default is paying with bank account with their exchange rate...

and you can actually change the payment method to using your credit card..either billed in the original currency of the transaction OR using paypal's rate...

i personally find that paypal's rate is actually slightly better than my TD visa..but that's just me..
the only thing with being billed in for example U.S currency is that if you return something you get dinged on the 2.5% add on by your cc BOTH WAYS..when you pay and when you get your money back...whereas with paypal from my experience i've had the exact amount refunded to me...
so you take a risk either way..

For a long time.

usd will not go back up again any time. specially as its being dumped by china and rest of the world as reserve currency. if you follow the trend they (many big economies) are already dumping currency to buy other assets.

Japan will be selling their USD holdings soon to free up money for rebuilding after the quakes.

just incase anyone has been sleeping... exchange rate is better than ever if you are exchanging from CAD to USD. It was around 6 cents stronger this morning.. crazy.

Hypothetically speaking... Let's say the US ecomomy goes into the crapper even further. The exchange rate goes up to $1.50.

What's your game plan then?

If the exchange rate reaches $1.50 our economy will be in very serious trouble, I don't even want to imagine the potential consequences.

If you have a Borderless account with TD, their rates are pretty competitive. It's within half a cent of VBCE. That's close enough for me not to stand in the 15 person deep line ups at VBCE.

Dollar is really good. Went to Pt. Roberts to pick up some auto parts that was shipped there. Long lineup, I guess everyone is shipping stuff there to take advantage of the dollar.

Great if you are buying stuff from the States but not so good when exchanging from USD to CAD. I wish it just feel a little since I need to make a USD to CAD exchange.. if it stays like this I'll lose at least a few hundred bucks, phuck.

I'm with TD. Anyone know if they will give a better exchange or Vancouver Bullion?
