I think linux on PS3 was only ever done just so they could say they could do it. It is pretty much useless in every way.

The biggest problems with linux on a PS3 and the reason why it's slow:

1. Only 226mb RAM.
2. The "powerful" video chip is locked down and can't be used in Linux.

Solution:
PS3 Media Server, a free streaming program that will allow the PS3 to access movies and music from your computer. As long as you don't use funky mkv files, it's very smooth.

You don't even need any software to stream if you are using Windows. WMP11 and WMP12 both work (12 is better as it natively supports MP4, but 11 can do the same with a registry hack)

Nice to know. You'll need the software for Linux and Mac systems.

PS3 Media Server and TVersity give way less headaches with some of the weirdass file/encoding setups some people use in torrents.

But then you're transcoding, which means loss of quality and wasted CPU cycles.

it only transcodes what the PS3 can't play natively, which pops up a lot. set it for max quality and you'll lose next to nothing. plus for people who don't know what they're doing using a proper streamer prevents them downloading the same shit 5 times, or posting up here asking why it won't work.

I transcode every .mkv file directly to my ps3 with zero problems. 1080p or 720p, of course the ps3 is wired to my network and not using a wireless connection. Running ps3mediaserver from my box. Everything is gigabit ethernet as well.

You don't need linux installed on your ps3.

Streaming HD over wifi is too slow, ethernet is the way to go.

There are better solutions than transcoding though. If you use MKV2VOB, it will remux the MKV files into MPG files that the PS3 will play, and Windows will stream natively. This way, you will not lose any quality. It takes less than a minute to convert a movie.

You can stream up to 720p over Wifi-G in my experience. For 1080p you'll need to have a Wifi-N network at least. I have my PS3 using ethernet and stream 1080p over Wifi-N no problem.

code then send vs code and send? forgive me for not understanding every codec but it sounds like you're proposing doing the same thing, just in 2 steps.

No, what I am talking about is changing the container from MKV to MPG. The audio and video are untouched, so no quality is lost, no CPU cycles (and power) are wasted, and no time is wasted. Instead, everything is kept intact, 100% original quality, in just a few seconds. Yes it's an extra step, but a very short one and totally worth it in the end. This is the better way to do things, I thought I would share.

so it basically changes the extension and all necessary internal bits from MKV to MPG? interesting.

Yes and it's 100% automatic. It will also split files to FAT32 size if you want to read off a memory card.

When I first got my ps3 i went through the headache of installing linux on it so i could stream anime and other videos that the ps3 won't natively play. It became such a hassle that I looked for another alternative:

This. Except I had to have TVersity running all the time and sometimes it didn't update the library properly so i scrapped that.

Then this once I started using Windows 7. I get the odd file that doesn't play for whatever reason but this happens so infrequently that I can just put it on a USB stick and walk the 10 feet to plug it in and play it (still have no idea why it plays the format off a usb but not through windows media).

Essentially to reiterate what everyone else has said, don't bother with linux on the ps3.
