As much as I want higher upload speed, I can't justify paying an extra $10 for xtreme for xx kb/s upload.

MikeyStyle
10-16-2009, 05:55 PM
it's because of powerboost (http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/PowerBoost/)

Gt-R R34
10-16-2009, 07:10 PM
Btw- today's Vancouver Sun had a huge article from Harvard, talking about countries internet speed vs cost ratio.

We're the worst then mexico and only better then Slovakia. Needless to say South Korea and Japan owns the rest of the world by like 100000X times.

Correct, Powerboost will give a slight increase in DL performance by a few seconds.

With FF using DownloadThemAll, I get a constant 1.5-2MB /sec if from Microsoft downloads.

Crowtservo
10-16-2009, 09:11 PM
it's because of powerboost (http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsServices/Internet/PowerBoost/)

"PowerBoost provides bursts of download speed of up to 5 Mbps above the customer’s provisioned download speed for the first 10 MB of a file. It then reverts to your provisioned speed for the remainder of the download."

People are still getting 20-25 then on the High Speed package??

SkinnyPupp
10-16-2009, 09:14 PM
Because the speedtest.net file is less than 10MB, it uses powerboost for the whole thing. So basically, speedtest.net is useless for Shaw users. Plus it's testing on a Shaw server anyway, so of course you are going to get the absolute fastest speed possible.

Mb/s = Megabits
Megabits / 8 = Megabytes (MB)

I'm pretty clear on it. 25-30 Megabits (3-4 MB/s) is still really fast compared to the rated speeds (7.5-15Mb/s according to shaw's website)

Telus Turbo. It's ok in my opinion. Tried Shaw, their service was horrible and the unit didn't work in my area well.
I'll go back when i move out on my own.

speedboost won't get you to 70 though. It's not even supposed to be getting people to 25-30.

Speedtest is unrealistic for some reason. But here's what I got :lol

http://www.speedtest.net/result/771782279.png

I usually like to run Telus' "Size Test/Speed test". It's more accurate.

http://i39.tinypic.com/15gtoc5.jpg

I'm on a 6.0 Mbps line and I can't complain since I'm only paying $20 ;)

Humm that is strange, I'm getting shit numbers from speed test but I can easily DL files/torrents at 700-800kb/s whereas you got almost 3.5x of my speed from the test and avg 650kb/s guess Speedtest.com is not that accurate after all.

No, it's not, it's available to apartment complexes in the Lower Mainland where Novus is available.
