Introducing: REVSCENE MOBILE!
SkinnyPupp
10-18-2009, 07:35 PM
Go ahead and visit Revscene from your mobile device - it will automatically detect that you are on a mobile, and show you a stripped-down version.
All the content is the same, and many features are still there, including the ability to search for new posts, and enter your user CP. There is even a quick reply box! ;)
Youtube embedding works too, but I am thinking of disabling that. I'll post a thread for that separately.
And here it is.
For everyone whose browser is not being detected as mobile, please go to this page (http://vbdev.org/test-mob-detect.php) in that browser, and paste exactly what it says here.

I decided to disable Youtube embedding - too many people make a thread with like 5 videos embedded. They will show up as links, so you can still load them one at a time.

Opera 9.5 should work fine. 9.7 may have some issues. Find your useragent and I'll manually set it to use the mobile version. I uninstalled 9.7 from my phone because it kept trying to load full desktop versions of sites.
EDIT - or maybe it was the issue that has been resolved, where it would show the full version of the site for guests

Looks good. It's simple, just the way a mobile site should be.
Would be even better if the text was centered. For me at least, I find that it's all organized to the left, which looks kinda weird.
Do you think I should have it post the user-agent, or just a short message like "Posted on RS Mobile"?
Is there a way of having it so that the message appears before the actual post?

I find on an iphone the normal way is pretty easy to navigate. Plus you get all the features you would have at a desktop, rather than a toned down version.

To everyone complaining: This is a work in progress. If you have constructive criticism, let me hear it. This is my first time ever working on a mobile version of a site.
To all the iPhone users saying you'd rather view the full version on your 480x320 screen - umm.. sure. I'll add the option to switch back later, if you really think that's a more efficient way to view a site.

Maybe you can keep the mobile site barebones and make a second, "enhanced" mobile version for iPhone/Android/WebOS/smartphone users? Just build upon what you've got in the mobile site: better, more touch-friendly formatting and buttons?
Though quite honestly, the mobile site is FAST AS HELL as it is on my Magic, and I am pretty damn pleased with it so far. :3

I like the new touch friendly buttons :)
Keep up the good work, SP!
Constructive Criticism:
- new PMs counter somewhere near the top?
- "back to top" button on the bottom of the thread, and a "to the bottom" button on the top of the page
- default action for clicking a thread seems to be taking me to "first unread posts", which is hit & miss for me...RS never seems to keep track of read/unread properly....perhaps have a separate button for unread post and the default action for clicking the thread title to first post? (Just like the full site)
- have a "first unread" post button while in the thread.

Ok. I signed in with my iPod touch to see what the fuss was about and I can confirm that the site is a bit hard to navigate with the iPhone
It doesn't appear to format as nicely as on my android device. Everything is so small, I have to pinch zoom to click a link. To read posts, I have to zoom, then scroll horizontally and vertically.
The iPhone formats the site with extra wide columns.

I guess not...I don't use my iPod to surf much.
I just went to a couple websites, and it doesn't appear to wrap text relative to the zoom level.

I could set a fixed width, but that would cripple all the phones with higher res than iPhone :(
I am using a WebKit browser to view RS Mobile right now, and it wraps lines perfectly fine... Maybe there is a setting in Safari somewhere that you don't know about?

Keep the suggestions coming. I am noticing that there are many limitations of Safari that I am not familiar with, so there are some things I wouldn't think of adding.

For everyone whose browser is not being detected as mobile, please go to this page (http://vbdev.org/test-mob-detect.php) in that browser, and paste exactly what it says here.
^^^
But seeing as Bolt Browser is supposed to be a "Desktop Browser for Mobile" I think it is doing what it's supposed to by not showing you the mobile site. SkyFire is similar.

Now all this needs is avatars and thanks button.
And some space on the left side, like a margin to keep the text from rubbing right up against the left of the screen. Two to three pixels worth of space at least.

Overall I like speed and functionality of RS mobile but find the design a little too bare bones. Maybe throw in a nice looking RS banner and add some more colour, right now this reminds me of my BB pearl email interface, dated and boring.
I can't seem to access all the tabs on a users profile page, is this a known issue? Also I would love to be able to switch back to the full site if I want to. My iPhone ran the full site pretty well and sometimes I prefer it. Most sites out there give you the option to switch back and forth, being forced to use the mobile version is not too cool. Scrolling down in this quick reply box on the iPhone is problematic too, I had to scroll, zoom out, scroll some more and then zoom out again just to write this last line.

After exiting the quick reply box the view jumps all the way up to the top of the page. When clicking on the quick reply box again it has scrolled up to the top again and I have to struggle to scroll down again... The issue seems to be that it doesn't keep it's place in the box or page and always snaps back.
