Laptop screen goes grey on start up

Can someone help me with this. When I go to start up my laptop, the HP symbol comes up as it normally did, but then the screen turns grey and does nothing. Can anyone tell me a solution to fix this problem or whats wrong with it??

When was the last time it was working? What were you doing last on the laptop? What OS are you running? I'm going to guess some version of Windows. I'd see if I can at least get the start-up menu. When the HP logo comes up, keep pressing F8. You should get the Windows start-up menu. Try selecting stuff in there, like Safe Mode. If you can get into Safe Mode, try running a System Restore (Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore), and restore to an earlier date that you can remember it working properly.
