is this a full install or does it require a legit version of xp/vista to upgrade?
and it does say office 2007 initially, but keep going and then once you get to the " store menu " add the windows 7 pro to your checkout cart.
it comes out with two options, one with electronic download and one with disk kit which charges an extra $13.
Once you've got this please update to verify validity of this!

When they do come, the time value of money states that said difference will be worth less then than now. Hence, I get a discount either way.

This is legit right..?
And it says upgrade, which makes me want to say that you'll need a legit xp/vista to upgrade from.
However, my XP is cracked but it's been authenticated by all the windows tools already to be genuine.. and without a CD you can't really sell this to someone in case it messes up.

It's legit. It's the digital distributor for microsoft. And you guys can actually get 2 copies, just buy one 32-bit, and one 64-bit, the cd-keys should work for both.

Nvm i got it :P slow ass SFU email service.
Anyways I am using XP32bit and I want to upgrade to Win7 64bit.
From my knowledge:
-If you want to upgrade from XP -> Win7 you must do a clean install regardless.
-You dont get a hard copy disc unless you want to pay like 13 bux more and wait X amount of days for it to be shipped.
-You download an .exe file instead of an iso.
-Lots of people are reporting that you cant do a clean install with the .exe file and they need to do it by booting up a disc so a solution I found was make that .exe into an ISO and burn it then boot it up
The guide can be found here:
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/30470-make-bootable-iso-student-d-l.html
If you guys have trouble maybe look through all the pages and find the answer to your problem. I am gonna buy and try this sometime tmr when I see some more people with good results :P
Edit: It seems those upgrading from vista who might have similar problem can use that iso method as well

I had that same problem when upgrading from a 32bit to a 64bit OS a while back but I can't remember exactly what I did to fix it. I don't think it's the OS you downloaded that is the problem though. This is a full version, so you can install it without a pre-existing OS.
It was confirmed in windows seven forum when someone e-mailed microsoft tech support.
They said it's called an " upgrade " since it's "upgrading" from xp/vista or the newest OS. However it is the full install.

Maybe I'll just order the disk kit then. I don't wanna deal with this iso problem.
Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/forums/announcement.php?a=228)
if you can get it onto a iso...
download daemon tools..bascially a program that creates virtual drives and lets you boot the iso as if you were running a cd..
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/products/dtLite
link to download..lite version is free..
and oh ..damn i'm running vista home premium and i bought the 32bit thinking I would only need to upgrade...if I knew I had to do custom install I would've just bought 64bit..
buy my sony laptop is 2 years old and won't make much use of it..hmm
so I'm wondering how many times I can install this with the same key?
So all new computers will come with windows 7 and this upgrade is pretty much useless if you're gonna buy a new desktop right?
I'm contemplating whether or not to order the 64bit one too...

On a related note, I decided to use the copy I got from Amazon instead of downloading professional through the student deal (nothing I would use in pro anyway). I expected to have to A) install windows xp before I could "upgrade" to windows 7 or B) input the windows XP disc to verify I had a legit prior OS to upgrade from. Instead I installed from the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Upgrade disc without ever having to use the XP disc. I was previously using the RC1 and did a clean install so there was no record of a prior OS on the drive. I guess the "upgrade" concept turned out different than people expected.
I'll save the student deal for when I get home to Vancouver and install it on my secondary rig there. Hopefully the deal sticks around for a few months.

The difference is this one costs $40 and the in store one is $250. They are both the upgrade version. The "Box kit" is just the physical disc, you would use it in the same way you would use a bootable iso.

From booting from disc to loading windows the first time about half an hour. The time consuming part is always backing up and reinstalling your programs.

do you think its because i currently have an OS running right now so its detecting drivers and what not ?
should i wipe the harddrive first then boot up window 7 again and see if it still ask for drivers ?
if it still asks for drivers then i know its the installer
well it shouldn't even be going into the HDD to look for drivers I don't think. Do you have another DVD drive you can try it with?

the error is because you are trying to run a 64bit window 7 on a 32bit vista/window right ?
if you are .. you will get that error ..
burn it on a DVD, boot it up and give it a try ... if you get the same error as i did .. asking for dvd drivers or something ..
then go download the RTM version on mininova ... or any other sites liek that ..

So, is it only a few schools that get Windows for free to download? I got 7 pro two weeks ago through the MSDNAA from Waterloo... Do we just have a closer relationship with Microsoft or something? (Originally I assumed most students had a similar option)

I have a friend at Waterloo and when he told me about that I was pissed lol. Yes Waterloo has a special deal with Microsoft (or they pay for the right distribute). Many schools get discounts on software for students but very few are as good as Waterloo. The Microsoft student deal is available regardless of what school you go to (as long as it's on the list).
I know Vista was offered free at Waterloo but is Windows 7 as well? If so I'll have to bug my friend for an extra copy since he only uses linux.

Microsoft hires more coop students from Waterloo each year than everyone else, except for MIT. I'm guessing our software database is a perk of that. Anyways yeah we have 7 Professional for free so see if you can get a serial off your friend.

This is a full version, so you can install it without a pre-existing OS.
It was confirmed in windows seven forum when someone e-mailed microsoft tech support.
They said it's called an " upgrade " since it's "upgrading" from xp/vista or the newest OS. However it is the full install.
I installed this successfully on a clean & empty HD, however, when I try to enter my activation code, it returns an error stating it's only for upgrading, and not a clean install.
I'm not doubting what you're saying, i'm just explaining what I'm experiencing. It won't accept my activation code. I don't know what to do.

If you have a 32bit OS and want Win7 64bit. You will need to buy the disc. You can download it, but you will not be able to unbox the downloaded files, so you can't do jack.
At least that is latest that I have read. Digital River is getting users who had 32bit and bought the 64 thinking they could just download it, to call them. I figure they just give out refunds or make them pay for the disc.
I have XP and was planning on installing 64bit Win7. Waiting for my disc to arrive...

If you care about your programs and settings, do an upgrade.
If you dont care about your programs and settings, do a custom install.
You will be prompted with an option to save ALL your files into a file called windows.old
This includes EVERYTHING in the C://, which also contains your Documents etc.

I threw it out at my last hotel fuk. lol have to download it again. thnx though. Also does the Win7 dvd give an option to format the partition like how the XP dvd does when you boot off it? I tried the demo version and i had to format with the xp disk, then reboot before it copied the xp files on and pop in the win7 disk to install as the win7 didnt offer the format option.

yea its the OEM version, it'll lock to the mobo, or lock to something. Not sure what happens if your mobo gets struck by lighting and you get a new mobo, i'm guessing if you call microsoft under those circumstances they'll reactivate the serial for you.

x64 can utilize more ram, but it doesn't mean you HAVE to use more ram. Get the x64, there's no reason to buy a 32 bit OS anymore.
i know its only been out for a few weeks, but i thought it would be more compatible with existing apps.
i wouldnt call this a reason not to buy it, but ive had 64bit windows 7 pro installed for 3 days and have already run into multiple programs that do not support it. SQL server doesnt work with windows 7 x64 (x64 xp/vista only), so i had to run it inside a VMWare environment with 32bit XP. also sometimes i like to keep older versions of programs because i dont like bloated software. an example of this is adobe acrobat. i've been using version 6.0 for years! older apps were not made for x64 environments obviously. i have a drive on my computer where i keep old software. can't use stuff like that anymore.

Okay, I have a problem already..
I think someone brought this up before but that was installing with an ISO.
So, I got my disc today finally and i'm just trying to install it and right after the start up i get the "cannot find dvd/cd rom drive... blah blah" error. I googled it and apparently it's a very common problem, but now I'm stumped. I'm not computer savvy, but I can do things as long as I have a set of instructions, but until now I have not found a suitable one
Help? :( And I'm doing a clean upgrade from Home Premium 32 vista to Prof 64 Win7
EDIT:
nvm, figured it all out hehe

Sorry to bump this up but I finally got the upgrade and I'm getting fucked here.
I went to do a clean install of 64 bit on a new HDD, but it says my key isn't valid (wtf?) so I go ahead with no key planning to add it after. When I get into 7 and put in the key it says the key is for upgrade only. Fuck. I don't think I can upgrade from my 32 bit OEM copy of Vista to 64 can I? Even then, that copy of Vista is bogged to shit and on the wrong harddrive, so I went to at least try and use the recovery partition to reformat to OEM but now there's no fucking option at boot to recover
WHAT THE FUCK DO I DO?!?!?!?! I just want to put this goddamn 64 bit Windows 7 on my nice new HDD.
Got my cd today and order it back in mid nov

I tried it a bunch of times a bunch of different ways but it would never accept my serial either in the installer or in Windows. I found a way to workaround it that's super simple, it was posted up that it worked for Vista and people were wondering if it worked for 7 as well. It did for me, so here it is:
1) Download the upgrade ISO from Microsoft when you pay and get the serial key (or just use a plain Win7 ISO) and burn it.
2) Boot from disc and follow the install, when it gets to the serial number and activation, don't enter one and uncheck automatic activation when online (not sure if that was important or not but uncheck it anyways)
3) Finish up the install so you're running the 30 day trial of Win7 Ultimate
4) Take out the install DVD, restart
5) Put the disc back in, and boot up the upgrade installer from inside Windows
6) Go through the whole thing again, this time entering your upgrade serial key and leaving the auto activation checked off
7) Finish the install, and enjoy your shiny new copy of Windows 7
Super easy since all you do is install it twice, I guess all the upgrade thing checks for is if you`re running 32 or 64 bit, and if your current install is horribly illegitimate.

if windows won't take the upgrade key. you can just do this. worked for me. much easier than installing twice.

you install once, then run the "upgrade," to me that's just more idiot proof/safer than that other method. and it won't take much longer.

u only get 1 key per software per student account.
even if u reg into another comp sci course the very next semester, u'll still get the same key.
the one and only way that i can think of to get another key is to transfer to another school that offers msdn, which they'll probably give u a new account with different keys.

the update will still allow you to use the full version from start.
Last deal was the windows 7 HOME premium update
I guess if you were using a windows os before its all good
SkinnyPupp
04-02-2011, 05:15 PM
To install the update as a full version, you just have to install it twice. Weird, I know, but it works.
There's 2 other methods listed here: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media.aspx
I've tried the 2nd method multiple times with success.
I tried adding the 64-bit version to the cart, but it gives this message:
"The purchase limit for this product has been exceeded, no more purchases are allowed. If you would like to purchase a different product, click here. If you have questions about your account, please contact customer support here."
I guess they remembered that I bought it the last time they had this offer and won't let me make another purchase.
