: Steering wheel setups

How do you guys with the steering wheels (logitech, xbox, etc) have it hooked up to your game consoles?

My coffee tables too low, I tried a portable dinner table which is not sturdy at all.

I've found a couple stands from Fanatec, Wheel Stand Pro, Xcelerator, etc. All costs over $200 USD with shipping.

Anyone have any DIY ideas they've done, or interested in a group buy? Would likely need to order about 20 to do group buy. I can setup a vendor account with one of the companies.

I know what you mean OP, I was used to my friends fully built racing seat and frame.... but a good very effective and simple setup is a table similar to the one I got right here in the pictures below...If I remember correctly I bought it at Wal Mart (Not 100% sure though) you can find computer tables similar to this at any office store and they can be pretty much any height thanks to adjustable height office chairs, but the most important thing is on the bottom it has to be free so you can put your pedals on the carpet, so the table can't have any pieces on the bottom, has to have space for the pedals...

it's really sturdy, I can get pretty violent with the wheel when I'm drifting for example, and it doesn't budge much, also it has room just barely to fit a 21 inch widescreen like the one I got in the pics there.....
And coming from race seat framed setups custom built to this, I've never really had a problem or had an urge to go back to the seat/frame setups so it's your next best solution and it works pretty well.... I'm 6'1 and 190 lbs and I can play like this for a few hours without any comfort issues.... I have a $300 ergonomic office chair though, so you need a comfy seat offcourse, but as far as positioning of the steering wheel and petals, it's perfect

here's a quick picture

I have a desk that works great for PC (similar to yours but bigger ADON), but for console gaming I don't want to have a big desk sitting there for gaming. I would rather utilize my TV for gaming rather than my LCD monitor. Looking for ideas or tips on a stand for the living room. I don't have space in my apartment for a playseat or anything big.

Looks like only option is to get the Fanatec stand.

Anyways I'll call them and see how much my retailer discount would be.

when i upgraded to the g25 my dad helped put together this racing stand for me

I attempted to spray paint racing stripes using the tape method last month. Took me 2 cans just to get it evenly sprayed on.. This stand was meant to be used with the couch for viewing distance/audio sweetspot but it's a bitch moving it in/out

the wires looks messy but it's actually quite tidy. I have the USB cord tucked into the floorboards so it seems almost like it's wireless

it took 2-3 revisions to get it to that state...probably another one to elevate the pedals and valcro for wire management in the near future and it'll be perfected

I think i'll have to pony up soon and buy the Fanatec stand + steering wheel.

I need something that can fold up and be stored away. I live in an apartment and space is always the issue.

Anyone own the Fanatec Turbo S wheel?

Chilicoke's is the pretty sweet in my opinion. I've see another one after poking around google but I can't find the link again. The guy had the whole interior from a VW. Center console, dash, seat, I even think he installed door panels lol. Never the less it was a pretty sweet setup. Although like many have mentioned one needs a lot of time, patience, skill, money and room for such a racing gaming chair thing.

I use to have one that I made when I changed my cloth interior to leather in my Prelude. I made it out of PVC piping, nuts, bolts, and a little bit of plywood/2x4's. I have some pics somewhere I'll try to post them if I find them for people who are interested in making one. I based it on the Sparco Cockpit GT that was out for some time. Don't know if its still available. After a while someone wanted my cloth Prelude interior so I had to part with the seat and I took the setup apart. I wish I still had it but I'm dealing with not a lot of space.

I'm looking for another racing gaming chair thingy again. Particularly the Playseats Evolution in white/silver with the gearshift accessory. All I can find are the ones on amazon.com and smoketronics.com
But I am trying to find it locally or atleast someone/somewhere in Canada that has it because after I calculated everything I will be spending just under 500CDN for it all (after shipping, duty and taxes) Trying to see if I can get it cheaper somewhere before I pull the trigger on amazon.com

I've been looking for 5 days now... I really want one!! :(

threezero
12-28-2009, 01:32 PM
aint smoketronic canadian? wouldn't that mean one would save on shipping? where exactly is playseats made in? usa?

european
12-28-2009, 01:38 PM
I'm not sure where they are made... I'm assuming China but if you go to the playseats website.. www.playseat.com they appear to be based out of Europe? And if you click resellers the map that's provided has two locations both in Italy.

Not sure if smoketronics is canadian or not but it looks like they do ship to/within Canada.
But if you look at the item is says out of stock. They'll have more sometime in January 2010. I want mine NOW! hahaha

Got my Playseats Evolution! It's pretty bad ass! I really recommend it if one has the funds and space in their room/home. You will not be disappointed. I went to FedEx depo today in Bellingham cause the mailbox I get my stuff shipped to was closed. Got home right at 3pm, had all of the gear set up and ready to go just a little bit after 4pm and I just stopped playing GT5P and NFS:Shift.
Got it from Amazon.com and paid $329 USD after WA taxes. If you want the gearshift accessory it's an extra $47 USD.
Get it from amazon.com or smoketronics.com when they have it in stock that is.
After all said and done... I say it's totally worth it. unless you have time, money and space to built a custom one like chilicoke did then go for it!

EDIT:

Forgot to mention... For those of you who do not have a lot of space the Playseats Evolution is really convenient. It's all adjustable and can be taken apart relatively quickly (if needed). The seat even folds and I'm surprised how comfortable it is. I wasn't expecting it to be that comfy. So if you have some room in your closet or something you can most likely get it to fit in there depending on how much space you have. My room is about 100 square feet and my Playseat Evolution is about 51 inches long right now and that's extended out it just a bit.
The Evolution was designed for the Logitech G25 as all the holes line up perfectly when mounting the pedals, wheel and gearshift mount. Even provides you the proper screws for it. Basically GO GET IT! hah.

i guess that's only applicable in older racing sims then? I mostly have new ones and dont know where to enable that option..but it came default like that in GT4 (i guess they didn't invite 6-shift wheels back then)

pretty silly anyways because say if you shift down the shifter will stay there...it wont pop back to center position.

Make sure when shifting gears you don't slam through them. I've heard of lots of people breaking their shifters due to aggressive shifting.

european
01-17-2010, 09:49 PM
In the worst case you can buy a G25 gear box replacement as they might be interchangeable. $40 from smoketronics.com

Or the cheaper way out is to modify the shift stick like I did on my G25. Installed a rubber o-ring under the shift stick and a spacer for the locking position spring. Not sure if you can do this with the G27 but once again I wouldn't be surprised if you can.

twitchyzero

stupid if you ask me

and they should've just kept the g25 name for this...this is more like a revision 2 like what they do on many logitech products

I never liked the 10inch diameter wheel that the G25 came with, it felt too light as well. So I swapped that out with a 320mm momo wheel and flipped the pedals that came with the G25. They're just way too close together and I like the Honda style instead of the Mercedes/BMW style that it original comes in. I want to install an e-brake as well but I need to create/mount some it to something first. But I think it would be more of a cosmetic thing for me as I do not drift much on GT5P if it is necessary to do so when the full game is released then I'll consider it.

Rock solid! Doesn't move at all. I mounted some legs to the floor board so it is pretty sturdy. I have the pedals resting up against the legs of my table which my TV stands on just in case as well. And it doesn't vibrate the table as well.

Thanks! The G25 is really easy to modify. Just take the casing off, disconnect the wires, flip the pedals, reconnect wires, then mount it to your frame and you're done!
The momo wheel was 56 dollars plus another 40 to ship from Japan off eBay. It said 2-3 weeks for delivery when it only took 6 business days.

Thats $300 USD. Either way buying from states and p/u from border Your looking at over $500CAD

european
02-04-2010, 05:10 PM
Yea I paid 299 USD from Amazon with free overnight shipping and picked it up from a PO box in Blaine the next day. The dollar was low as well back then so the exchange rate was next to nothing. Brought it across and customs did not charge me any duty or other taxes. I was surprised because I declared it at the border and even handed the customs officer the invoice.

The guy asked... Oh neat, is it that vibrating one? I replied... No sir, it's just like a Recaro or Sparco racing seat attached to a frame and you use it with your Playstation or computer. He then said alright, see you. I guess I got lucky? I saved some money right there. haha.

The Playseat Evolution is pretty mod friendly I'd say. It's pretty much made for the Logitech G25 so you can reuse the existing screw holes to mount the pedals. Just get creative and reinforce it so if you are worried about "rat bagging" the pedals they should be good to go if done correctly.

It's not tan, it's white with some black. The lights in my room are not the greatest.
Don't know how much the cloth ones are I remember when I was searching for one they were a bit cheaper though but I don't think by much.
You can get one from smoketronics they have both black and white in stock and its 340.99 plus 50 to ship via Canada Post.

I recommend both G25 or G27 and a Playseats if one can afford it. It's makes the gameplay experience completely different and in my opinion much better and at times may be challenging.

I need to redesign the whole thing as I do not have enough room to rev match heel-toe style but I tuned the NSX so I wouldn't have to so no more over steer!

EDIT: OOOH! It does it automatically. I thought you have to put in some additional BBCode or something hah! WICKED!

nice vid! how did you mount the inverted pedals to the frame of the playseat? did you have to add some sort of bar? i assume the pedals were still relatively stable without resting on your table as in this pic?

Thanks! I got some L shaped brackets from home depot with a few bolts, nuts and washers. Along with a bar that I cut in have. Drilled some holes into the bar and mounted everything together. Yes its very stable. Barely moves at all.

Make sure you get the m6 bolts for your wheel. You will need them anyways so might aswell buy them b4 the wheel comes in.

Sorry guys I didn't have time snapping some photos of how I mounted my pedals. I'll do it soon. Sorry for the delay I've been using all of my spare time to find exhaust gaskets that will work with my Mugen exhaust aaargh these things are so hard to find and no kingmotorsports doesn't have them.

Amazon.com!!! Get it shipped to a post office or something and just bring it across yourself that's what I did. The box that it all comes in is pretty small. It all fit in the front passenger seat of my Prelude so you should be good if you're worried about that... or just get it shipped directly to your house. You can also get it from smoketronics.com which I believe is within Canada. Shipped from Toronto. I got mine from amazon.com it was on sale and I got free overnight shipping :)

dont worry just take your time european. i can live w/ mounting the pedals "normally" for now

and jegglez, off the top of my head when i was shopping for playseats evo:

amazon.com: 329.99 usd + free shipping to US (US tax + HST)
amazon.ca: 349.00 cad + free shipping to CAN (+HST)
smoketronics on ebay: 329.99 + 30 shipping to CAN(US prices + HST)

I just got a G27 today, my seating position sucks so I have to paddle shift but damn it's fun, I can't wait to build a full rig for it.

Any mods or tweaks you guys suggest doing right off the bat for longevity/better experience? I got it used but it's only 2.5 months old and I have the reciept so I'd like to keep the warranty intact.

^ Logitech is very fair with their warranty from my experience, I count on 2 separate occasions they had sent me a new set of pedals and all I did is just call in tell them the original set was squeaking or something minor, just gave the people the part number off the sticker on the back of of the pedals aaand got to keep the old set of pedals as well as a beater set for practicing heel toe shifting, lol

this was my experience with them, both times positive, one pedal set was from the driving force gt and the other set was for the g27

Congrats on the new toy!
I purchased my G25 years ago and I still love it everytime I use it. I took the pedals out of the case and flipped them. Got a larger steering wheel and tightened up shift box thingy so it feels like it has a heavier shift. I got around to installing the e-brake handle as well but I'm still working on something to mount the ebrake.

You might like the Playseat Evolution. They don't really collapse but you can shorten it after you're done playing. And if you really wanted to you can fold down the seat in half.
I guess its slightly similar to what you currently have. If you slide the plate that the pedals and bar for the steering wheel under the IKEA seat, it would probably be about the same length as the Playseat Evolution once shortened.
I don't think there is one that can fold up into a little 4x4 box or space heh. And if there is and someone knows about it please tell us as I want one too!!

Just make sure you know what your getting. The Playseat is the real deal.. So your looking @ $500 for it.. You can buy the Chinese Knockoff version which is called the Gameseat which you can buy locally off CG for $250-$300 with shifter mount included. Works the same but build quality isnt as good but good enough to do its job. Just nothing pretty.

Link to the group buy on the gameseat and reviews.

I ordered my playseat at $350. I'll report back in a few days on how much it costs with customs and tax. Roughly $400 I estimate.

Edit: that was dumb. Found the same thing on amazon.ca. Submitted a request to cancel the .com

How do you tighten up the shifter? I only got to use it for a few seconds before my pedals went flying but it felt pretty light.

Man I can't wait til they have force feedback shifting, so if you miss-shift you'll grind the gears etc. Maybe GT6.

You have to open up the gear box thingy and insert a little pin/spacer thingy under the position locking spring. It increases the pressure which pushes the ball bearing against the plate which gives you a heavier shift like feeling.

like this... http://chilicoke.com/mods/shifterresistance.htm
