: Tethering a laptop to a 3G phone

The reason I'm tapping this thread out on my Blackjack II is because all of my efforts to tether my phone to my laptop have proven fruitless.

Does anyone know exactly how to do it?

I've set up Internet Sharing on my phone and I've installed the drivers onto my computer. When I connect the phone to the computer and set the connection type to Modem (instead of Activesync) I don't get the option to 'Connect' in Internet Sharing on my phone.

What am I doing wrong?

And if this is more appropriate for the Mobile Phone forum feel free to move it.

The iphone has a option to turn tethering on. When I turn it on all i have to do is plug the usb into the computer and my internet starts working.

Check to see if your phone has a tethering option.

yea iphone is as simple as keeping the tethering option open, when you plug the iphone into the computer you have internet instantly

nope, as long as you have a data plan

with the iphone i dont even know if rogers really knows wether you are tethering or not because the whole tethering option is built into the iphones firmware, it's not through rogers besides the data transfer

I was told as long as your data plan is 1GB/month or more, you can tether the iPhone.

If you have Windows Mobile:

-Plug in the USB cable
-Start "Internet Sharing"
-Done!

This is more appropriate for the Mobile Phone Forum. :D

It sounds overly difficult to do i with a WinMob device. -_-

I love how iPhones got brought into this when EB wanted help for his WinMo Blackjack :haha:

If it's winmo, then my reply is the answer. It only required 2 lines of text :lol

If you want, you can use this app (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538874) to turn your WinMo phone into a wireless router, and share it that way ;)

See, when I go to 'Internet Sharing' I see the word 'Disconnected' and the button option for 'Connect' is grayed out. Hurf a durf? I think so.

then it sounds like your provider wont allow you to do what you want then. Best bet is to call them or go to a store and ask them.

Strange... I had no problems with my old Fido BJII. Are your internet settings correct?

You may need to call into your service provider to enable tethering on your account. There could be absolutely nothing wrong on your end.

EDIT: Clarification.

Yeah, but maybe I don't have the proper version of the tethering software. My OS is 6.5 and the software I have is for 6.

I'm on Fido too and I can browse fine, use Skype fine, just not this.

How'd you get 6.5 on it? I thought the specs weren't good enough to run it. That's why I bought the Samsung Epix to replace it. But anyways... If you flashed it with a aftermarket ROM then chances are, the settings aren't correct.

My BJII worked with the default settings in Fido's ROM but I had to fiddle around with the Epix's settings before it teathered. One of the internet settings required the fido/fido username/password for the phone to teather. But... if this setting is wrong, it wouldn't cause your button to be grayed out. Maybe go back to the factory ROM?

Wait, I'm retarded. Its 6.1.
My bad.

hmm.. I can only recommend that you reflash the phone. I'm pretty sure my BJII worked off the bat after I went from wm6.0 to wm6.1. Maybe there's more help over at myblackjack2.com

Make sure you have Tethering enabled. You have to check with customer service.

WMWiFiRouter (http://wmwifirouter.com/). Adds a NAT layer between your wireless connection and your tether. Allows you to set your phone up as a WiFi hotspot as well as tethering via bluetooth and cable. Best part is, your provider doesn't see it as a tether, it just sees the phone using data.

My Telus plan includes unlimited data, but that doesn't include tethering... with WMWiFiRouter, they don't know the difference :D
