Rally to support Striking Workers

Hey guys,

My name is Paul and I wanted to post up a thread regarding the strike by the Extra Foods Workers in Maple Ridge. We are having a rally on Halloween in the morning from 11am to 2pm, (so you guys still have halloween night). These workers are part of a union named the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1518. The Extra Foods members in Maple Ridge have been on strike since December of last year. Negotiations are virtually non-existent as the employer (Westfair/Loblaws), refuses to return to the bargaining table. Issues include wages and benefits.

The New Westminster & District Labour Council and the Fraser Valley Labour Council are jointly calling on all union members, friends, family and affiliates to join with the workers and show our support for them.

Location: Extra Foods at the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road and 224th Street in Maple Ridge.

When: Halloween (Oct 31st) at 11am to 2pm.

Now I was kind of thinking that this could be a nice little pre meet/cruise to help out the workers. We can have a meet somewhere and then drive up there.
What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Paul

Nobody

Actually nobody is working at the Extra Foods except the essential pharmacy techs because the Pharmacy is still open. They have been out there for almost a year now, I think we should show some support and go to the rally. At lease we can get a nice cruise out of it

I would think that after a year UFCW would realize that Loblaws would rather keep the store closed than pay their demands.

well most people are working part time at other places.
Nobody at extra foods makes 24 bucks an hour. The point of this is that there is going to be BBQ there and a possiblity of a cruise. Plus Loblaws doesnt want to come back to the table and bargain. What about all the people that work in the grocery industry for a living, not only just people that are there part time.
It effects them the most.

You sure? I work at Cooper's and there's quite a few people who are making over $20/hour.

All unions do is heighten the price of groceries and limit the number of workers that could be getting a paycheck.

There is no need for unions in unskilled labor. They ruin everything.

i'm curious about this too. i often go to the library and see people playing cards and standing outside of extra foods. what exactly is it that they want?

sadly, it seems like there isn't much support. plus, the superstore is only a 5 minute drive away.

Yea, the guy mentioned earlier most of the workers are doing other part time jobs at the moment.

I think once the store does reopen half the employees probably won't come back.

The projectionists were out for a long time, I want to say 2 years? Their jobs just faded away into nothingness. The longer you're out the less people care until nobody cares except the people actually striking and their families. After a year the point of no return has probably already past.

Please elborate on "Issues include wages and benefits."

BTW, this is not welfare scene. We will not 'cruise' all the way there for a free hot dog.

P.S. I work in Labour Relations, and it's people like you with this 'insane sense of entitlement' that pisses the crap out of me.

Most strikers are dumb anyways. Consider this:

They want 10% over 3 years.
Management offered 6% over 3 years.
Difference is 4%.
2 weeks/yr is 4%

Thus if the strike lasts longer than 2 weeks, they are losing money. Sure there is strike pay, yet its pennies compared to their normal salary.

The biggest kick-ass of all: they are paying union dues which can be 5-10% of their salary! if they want a raise, punt the union!
