My grandparents said that they got pulled out because they had some substance in them that cause some cancer or disease. Got broadcast on the Chinese news or Chinese newspapers in Vancouver. No idea. I just know that they don't sell these in Chinese supermarkets anymore. If anything, you'll find them in shady markets.
EDIT: Googling this, came with this article: http://www.netnewsasia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=69&Itemid=67
In short, it's heart-disease in a can. In one meal, you get more salt than your body can safely digest in a month, a concentration of pollutants that can only come from a Chinese river, and several desert-spoons full of oil. It's a heart attack, ulcers and bowel cancer, all in one handy portable package.

Good shit, I requested my aunt's "gung yan" to open a can up for me every night when I was back in HK this past summer.
But AFAIK (or what I heard on the radio years back), Canada banned the importation of it, since it no longer met the revised Canada regulations/requirements for food imports.
It exists elsewhere, just not in Canada.
(if the above has already been mentioned, sorry - I haven't been following this thread until now... it really is EPIC FOOD FOR WINNERS)

Bumping an old-ass thread, but I found this at Osaka Supermarket. Bought two cans to see what the hubbub is all about.

What's the final lowdown on this stuff, does it cause cancer or not?
