Just curious what you RS techies recommend for Anti-Virus software?

Before I go out and waste money on shit software, what's good?

I've tried AVG, Norton, Symantec and Trend Micro Housecall (the free online one).

AVG seems to pickup things that other programs don't. Wondering if there's something even better.

TIA

if you must pay for something i'd get ESET Nod32 or avira, however i've switched to the new microsoft security essentials its pretty damned good according to most reviews, its super light weight, and free

http://www.microsoft.com/security_Essentials/

Symantec, TrendMicro are all bloat-ware junk

Awesome, thanks for the tips.

I'm trying the MS one since it's free and I have a genuine copy. :p

Honestly AVG (or other comparable free anti virus programs - avira, avast, etc.) will offer more than enough virus protection for the average user. I remember reading an article a while back showing how AVG was actually better at protecting than Norton, Trend Micro and a couple other paid services. I haven't used any anti virus software in more than 5 years and I have never got a virus. If you know you're not that cautious or if it is a family/shared computer you might as well pick up one of the free ones.

tl:dr don't pay for anti virus software.

norton (basically symantec) - big resource hog
i still think nod32 is the best, kaspersky would be next on my list, but it's still a little too intensive for my liking

i'll wait to see what ppl say about the MS software, i've installed hundreds of copies of nod32 on machines and so far none have come back with a virus problem

u have to take the opinions from a tech-savvy user with a grain of salt. we know or have a pretty good idea about what to click on, what not to click on, and what files are ok to run. the real test comes when u install anti-virus on a computer used by someone completely computer-illiterate. think QQ, PPSLive, all that china junk with all options enabled.

I'm using AVG Anti Virus 9.0, It's free and works very well. Easy to use and scans everyday for viruses and when your on google search, it tells you whether the site is safe or not.

tl:dr don't pay for anti virus software. Key word in that sentence would be a while back.

AVG is average at best these days. Norton has really stepped up their game over the last year or so (though I still wouldn't say they're top tier, but at least back up to 2nd tier)

I use Kaspersky, which is still one of the best, although they appear to be slipping (we've been selling it at Staples for close to 3 years now; the first 2 years, we saw less than 3 PCs come in w/ infections all year running Kaspersky, this year (specifically the last 3 months), that number has risen dramatically to about 2-3/month (Computers running AVG are now the most common computers brought in w/ infections, Norton is 2nd (but a lot less frequent than they used to be))

As for Microsoft Security Essentials, I've used it a few times, seems pretty decent. With it being Microsoft, I have little doubt in my mind that the reviews won't be so pretty next year, much the same way Microsoft Anti-Spyware was the defacto anti-spyware program 4-5 years ago before it got picked apart.

KIS 2010
I can't say KIS is the cause of my computer problems, but if I had to choose an alternative it would be MSE or Avira.

Norton and Symantec are NOT the same. Might be from same company, but Symantec doesn't have the bloat.

I would

I used kaspersky 2009 my start up was 2-3 seconds slower then norton 2010
and yes its consistent, norton updates it's fast and light.

Jmac

A 2-3 second slower boot time is negligible ... Kaspersky still does its job (protecting your computer) better than Norton ...

I have a macbook and I don't use an antivirus when I'm using OSX.

On my windows 7 partition I have avast. I remember seeing about it somewhere saying its a pretty good antivirus. I wouldn't really know though. I'm going to give the microsoft security essentials a try though. It seems pretty good from what everyone is saying about it.

I just use one til I get a virus then I switch... way back I used to use Mcafee... got a virus then I switched to Symantec Corporate edition. Then I got a virus and I'm now on NOD32. When I get a virus I plan to move to the MS Security Essentials.

I'm using Avira (the free version). You can set a local security policy to stop the pop up if it annoys you.

The latest Symantec is supposed to be pretty lightweight now and some fairly good detection rates too.

If you're looking for some independent comparisons of AV products, check out AV Comparatives (http://www.av-comparatives.org/). They do regular reviews of the popular AV products and give information on the speed, detection rate and false positives of many of the top AV products out there.

I like to consider myself fairly computer savvy but I don't think I'd EVER run without an AV product. That's just asking for trouble. Besides...if you don't run an antivirus, how do you truly know you don't have a virus?

do you at least have a firewall on? u seem to know what you're doing but with the antivirus/spam on i feel more free to click on more adventurous links and files, like going on one of those file hosting sites and have the AV block things repeatedly

Norton has always proved to be a resource hog, slowing down the machine in most cases

AVG doesn't do comprehensive scans from my experience, but you honestly can't expect that much when it's free and they have a paid version of it

Eset NOD32 has proven to be the best for me so far

Can anyone recommend me one that "turns-off" while gaming and "turns-on" when i'm not gaming?
