: First car suggestion

threezero

Ok this is not for me, my gf is going to be getting her license soon. so new driver, ZERO experiences. here's what she wants

- sporty coupe that looks nice
-AT

no other requirement
she would prefer new cars but excellent condition used car is also ok, so far a 30g budget.

here's what I came up with
-civic coupe
-genesis 2.0
-used g35
-use 350z

now here the problem
- its going to be her only car, so must be able to DD in all condition
(to me this pretty much crossing out everything on the list above except civic)
- I rather she not get the civic because I want to have some fun with whatever car she gets

any suggestions?
she will get base for sure, the only option she wants is a backup camera. if the car doesn't come with it I will likely get her one install aftermarket to be on the safe side

First, get her address, put a MY next to your choices and walk into an Autoplan office and ask for an insurance quote for a car with 0% discount.. that would have a pretty big impact.. especially on cars like g35, 350Z.

RWD + snows will do fine. You have more control in snow in a RWD than a FWD anyways. It is not the 90s anymore where there is no traction control. If you are that worried, get her a car that has LSD.

threezero
11-09-2009, 02:22 AM
so you think she will be find in a RWD in snow? I told her she might need to get a set of winter tires if she plan on getting any of these cars she don't like the idea. I have drove my parent's rwd car in the winter with all season before it was slippery and going anywhere with slope is a joke but otherwise I did ok but I don't have any experience with any of the cars I mentioned assuming LSD is included, all season ok?

I do realize the situation with new driver high insurance with the 350 and g, how is the genesis on insurance? right now she really like the genesis, especially after i told her it take 87 octane.

RWD have more control than a FWD in snow? really??? I've never driven FWD in snow, only RWD and AWD. the RWD i DD for a few weeks in winter has every fancy traction control gadgets and still slip and slides quite a bit. Wouldn't call it uncontrollable but I reckon it would be quite scary for a total noob. And I have always been told that FWD=AWD in snow?

If she's never driven before, just get her the civic. At least if she busts it up, it'll be easy and cheap to find replacement parts.

i read ur post and the 1st car that came to mind is the tibby

works out if you dont think she can handle rwd in the snow

godwin
11-09-2009, 03:28 AM
There are 2 components to driving one is getting control and traction to go and the other is getting enough control and friction to stop.

RWD in the snow requires more concentration to steer the car when it is going, however because the driveline and weight is at the back, when you stop and need to maneuver, it is more neutral.

FWD, your weight is all on the front, getting going might require less hand eye coordination.. but when you need to stop (especially in a hurry).. you don't have leeyway to steer.

Most people don't have problem driving in the snow, it is the stopping part and sudden weight transfer that causes majority of the accidents.

As for you gf don't want to get snow tires, put it this way.. it is cheaper for a set of snow tire than the 30% surcharge she is going to get on her insurance.

RWD have more control than a FWD in snow? really??? I've never driven FWD in snow, only RWD and AWD. the RWD i DD for a few weeks in winter has every fancy traction control gadgets and still slip and slides quite a bit. This was my and my brother's first car. It was a tank, and great to learn to drive on. It was so big that I had to learn to park properly. It had half the side dented in, so when people saw it they moved out of our way! :D

I think Genesis 2.0T will be the best choice for her, because power wise it is not as high as G35 or 350z, so it should be easier to handle for a new driver.

if she decides to go with a civic, PM me.
a few things a civic is good for a first car:
easy to drive, reliable, safety. But, after shes had a few years under her belt of driving, I would definately go with the g35 or something like that but for someone that is just starting to drive, a civic will do.

What about VW Golf/GTI? 3-door version... looks nice. FWD, has the DSG transmission. Altima coupe looks nice as well.

Also, 2-door will be more expensive for new drivers. Difference between 2-door and 4-door Civic Si came out to be a few hundred for me when I was getting quotes. Genesis coupe was also quite high insurance for me (5 years) - about 400 higher than a Civic Si 4-door, and 200(?) higher than 2-door.

I used to have a 97 Firebird and had no problems in the snow with a good set of snow tires, and Ilived in Edmonton for 3 years that car was my DD. Tell your gf winter tires is a must and put your foot down.

taylor192 is also on to something with his sugestion an older car is cheaper to buy, insure and fix your gf will be happier with a newer car only untill she hits things as the scratches, scuffs, and dents pile up she wont be happy any more.

Backup cameras are nice but she also needs to use her head and sholder check I'v seen people rely on cameras too much and they wind up cliping things

How old is she?

In general, I think a new car for a new driver is a mistake, as is reliance on something like a backup camera. She's better off learning a bit about how big her car is rather than using a crutch when sometimes that crutch might be unavailable. If you really care about her, you'll get her a car that meets her needs and budget before you think about having fun with her car ;). On that topic, what are her needs for practicality? Does she need to move shit about?

I would recommend FWD and probably snow tires, so something like the Civic / Corolla / Sentra / Integra / RSX. She might like the Fit or how about a Mini Cooper (cute and all that )?! People should develop the habit of reducing speeds appropriately in snow (maintaining smoothness in car control) rather than figuring out how to use oversteer to get out of a sticky situation.

This thread is full of fail.

It's her FIRST CAR.. she's going to dent it, smack it into things, other people, etc. Why get a nice car for the first car? It's a waste.

Get a Civic. Or a Cavalier. Or a Corolla. Something that is cheap to fix, but who cares if you fix it anyway.

freakshow
11-09-2009, 12:25 PM
I agree with a used civic or rsx. It'll be cheaper to fix when she hits something.
Is she set on a back up camera? She should learn without it, what if she drives your car in the future and you dont have one?

threezero
11-09-2009, 03:06 PM
she is dead set on a coupe. In fact she only likes curvy cars like g35 genesis non the boxy cars like fit or mini (probably the only girl that think mini is ugly). I will have her look at the integras and rsx seems like something she might like. She is very optimistic about her driving and her new car. She intend to keep the car for a looooong time hench why she wants to start with a new car.

The backup camera is not a must, she only found out there is such gadget because my ride come with one stock. I told her I learn to park the old fashion way with mirrors and common sense and also that backup camera is not 100% reliable and can distort distance depending on the weather condition, she understands but think it will be good to have "just in case". Unless she get the g35 or 370(it's getting less and less likely) the camera won't be an option anywyas, I will teach her how to park properly and let her learn before installing it for her if she still wants it

Practicality wise she will only use the car to get to school and to my house sing k etc, so big trunk and backseat is not necessary. If she does need to move shit i drive a suv so it's covered.
Keep the suggestion comming, appreciate this you guys have suggest many cars I have miss out

whole point of a first car is to be able to learn from your mistakes. like everyone else has said, smashing up a cheaper car is the best idea.

your gf needs to live in reality. she can't possibly handle an FR car in the snow w/o snow tires. hell, she probably can't drive in the snow with an FF car.

this being said, i'd go with the civic and add snow tires. she can be as ignorant as she wants until she crashes and finally realises how much it costs to fix everything.

I would just recommend a 10k used car, and save the money for next year when she has some experience. By that time she can sell the 10k used car for a bit less or a lot less for what she bought it for, depending on the condition of the car, and combine that money with the 20k to get a used G35 or 350z.

that is just my opinion

I like the genesis very much but again I'm rethink its suitablity as a first car. I'm not a fan of Toyota therefore totally miss the celica, fwd, sporty and not too expensive. What year did Toyota start making it with the new look?

Thinking back to my first car, so many scratch dents and end up being totalled maybe a used car is a much better choice. I'm concern with safety feature if she does get into accidents, which of the cars mention beside Volvo would be the safest? No disrepect to Volvo my family had 1 it was a tank but it was the dullest car I have ever came in contact with and have way too many problems

Most of the modern cars people have listed are pretty safe, including the GTi and even the civic. It's not something people typically worry about thanks to technical advancements in car safety over the years.

lol a stupid window motor which goes every 2-3 years on g35's cost $550

they're not super cheap to maintain. gas consumption isn't great,

but as to her driving a RWD as a first car. you can't really get into much oversteering trouble with the G35 when the traction control is on. so in the rain she'll be fine.

but i vote Honda Accord Coupe. either 6th gen or 8th gen.

but if she's deadset on the Tiburon or the Celica i'd probably go for the Tiburon, the V6 auto.

Posted via RS Mobile (http://www.revscene.net/forums/announcement.php?a=228)

I know it's a slightly older thread, but here's my two cents on this...

She wants to keep the car for a long time, right? So obviously she's looking into the far future with owning a car. However, and don't take this the wrong way, if she's going to rely on you to move stuff for her, that might be a bad idea. Who knows if you two will still be together in 6 months, 2 years, or 5 years. As great as it is to plan for the future, you can never be too sure what it holds. She shouldn't buy a car with zero cargo room simply because she feels that she wont need it.

As for buying a car, avoid driver aid gadgets like a back up camera. Especially for a new driver, they become a crutch that someone will rely on and when the time comes that they have to drive a car that doesn't have one, or if it breaks, then they're going to have a "bit" of an issue.

The other thing is regardless of if she feels that she doesn't need winter tires, MAKE HER BUY SOME!!! I will guarantee that as a brand new driver she will crash her car while driving in the snow and slush if she only has all seasons on. She could be driving as carefully as humanly possible, but it only takes one other car to skid out of control in front of her for her to react by slamming on the brakes while trying to swerve out of the way. Good freakin' luck avoiding the car with all seasons. At least with winter tires you have a much better chance of maintaining traction and avoiding skidding.

thanks for all the reply guys. i've talk some sense into her about how unpractical a coupe is as a dd, rwd for noob and all that.

I've manage to also change her view that sedans are boring and ugly (keep in mind she is not a car person at all). got her looking at sedans as well. she picked out the celica and the tsx. so yea she just need to get her license than go test drive these cars to make up her mind. Don't think celica or the tsx will come with backup camera or stock so she's going to have to learn.

good idea to run winter tire all the time? lol I'll never do that myeslf but i mean it could work? its not like she is looking for performance during summer or anything save her the hassle of having to find place to store 2 sets of tire make it less of a hassle

roastpuff
11-18-2009, 08:09 AM
No, using normal winter tires during summer is a bad idea. They will be VERY squishy (think marshmallow) and can actually be unsafe due to their steering response being very non-responsive. Also they will wear faster - much faster.

Try the Nokian tires... they are meant to be run year-round but still carry severe snow service certification.
