Aboriginals, down to 'last 10 dollars,' win huge Canada lottery

OTTAWA (AFP) - An aboriginal couple spent their "last 10 dollars" on a lottery ticket that won them the second largest jackpot in Canadian history, they said Tuesday.

Sporting a T-shirt, a baseball cap and sunglasses, and chewing gum, an emotional Kirby Fontaine, 40, of the Sagkeeng First Nation said he was very fortunate to have won the prize after suffering a stroke only one year ago.

His wife Marie, 36, said they had never strayed far from their home on an aboriginal reservation in Manitoba, venturing only to neighboring Canadian provinces and US states, but now planned to use their winnings to travel the world.

The 50-million-dollar (47.5 million dollars US) jackpot would go to provide Kirby with the best medical care money can buy to assist with his recovery, as well as to help out their friends and relatives, they told a press conference.

The jackpot "is going to benefit a lot of people, not just us -- our families, our community, our province," Kirby told public broadcaster CBC.

Many in their Sagkeeng community and the adjacent town of Pine Falls, Manitoba, with a combined population of just over 4,000, have been struggling since a pulp and paper mill locked out workers two months ago in a labor dispute.

According to the daily Winnipeg Free Press, the couple live with their two children in a tidy yellow mobile home surrounded by cats, dogs and lawn ornaments stuffed with silk flowers.

Marie works in a personal care home in Pine Falls, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba, while Kirby was a security guard at a local casino until his poor health made it impossible for him to work.

Despite their newfound wealth, the couple said they plan to "still shop at Wal-Mart" and "still like Kraft dinner."

 | They will only get taxed on the money they make off of their investments. They will still be making money ! And a lot of it.

Good that they won, but spending their LAST $10 on lottery tickets is pretty stupid.

not like it matters, though. they just have to make sure they hire an honest accountant Posted via RS Mobile | | | | | 11-10-2009, 04:46 PM | #13 | | Banned By Establishment

wow it's funny because i work with a lady that has sold lotto tickets for more than ten years. she bet one of the customers that no one would win lotto max until it hits 50 mil and someone WILL win the 50 mil for sure- so that the lotto corp. can show people how the game works, etc. interesting.
anyway, good for them for winning but i agree with RFlush hahah.

been hearing their story on the radio/news its very nice to hear ppl who really need the money winning
what's cool about natives ive noticed is that they share with their tribe/community whenever they receive something like this (not sure if its true for all but ive heard a good number)

 congrats to them
