Rats.

So just after I made breakfast and sat myself down in front of the TV, I see a rat scurrying across my living room.
The second I saw it, I had the instinct to grab my 1/2inch breaker bar from my room and hunted for it. I found it hiding in a little corner beside the bookshelf, and as it ran into a chair, I swung hard and successfully killed it. Killing it was no problem. It was my reaction right after it stopped moving. I dropped my breaker bar and ran outside like a little girl. The rat was dead, I broke the chair, and there was a rat that was killed by a crushing blow from pure hard steel.
Now, normally, dead rodents like roadkill and bugs dont scare me, but dead mice that I just killed and split open, does. This thing was ripped apart from the blow, and there's guts on my floor now. Worst part is, I broke the chair and it was stuck in the split wood about halfway up the shelf. Took me 30 minutes to get the courage to stop squealing near it, and poke it out into a bag to throw it out.
Now I have a few problems.
- How do I know if I have a Rat problem?
- How do I find them and kill them without hunting them down in case I run away like a girl again.
Will post pics of the broken chair in a bit.

I dont want to see the broken chair, i want to see the rat with guts everywhere.
Also, rats are not mice, you mentioned both in your post.
Stop being such a pussy.
I once cornered a rat and had my hockey stick handy. I teed up and when it ran closer to me, I one timed it across the floor to the opposing wall. It was still twitching when I went to it so I quickly snapped a wrister from the rebound. Then it died. G-G-G-GOAL.
Then I took my hockey stick and threw it out.

congrats on the killing of your house mouse. we had one in our basement last week (apparently it has a lot to do with recent cold weather). I tried to kill him but he got away, and then showed up again the next day, and again after that - saying hello upstairs and bolting back into the basement every time he was spotted.
we put out rat poison in the basement... dog snuck in and had himself a nice meal of poison. dog survived and after $600 at the vet - we havent seen the mouse in 3 days. If the mouse turns up.... he's going to be acquainted with my good friend, "Cage" and "wd40".

yeah. mechanic took everything apart and found what he thinks is mouse crap/droppnigs in the valley of the engine block, and whatever it was had chewed everything up to make the beginnings of a nest. you can see my other post here looking for oem toyota parts right now

I had a mouse die in my engine bay once...crushed by my battery. Stunk horribly. After i found it, i used tongs to grab its tail. When i threw it away, i swung the mouse by the tail but I didn't release the tongs fast enough so the mouse swung back and hit me by the shoulder
fuck
i was just in ny and at the subway i saw a dead rat that got cut in half by the train.
it was literally about 8 inches long without the tail, and it didnt even have the front legs or head attached. that probably meant this rat was about a foot long, and with the tail probably around 2 feet! holy fuck

We used to have mice; quite annoying.
Getting a cat is actually extremely effective, or even borrowing a cat. They're really low maintenance, but really get the job done. If that isn't an option, there are a few things you can do.
Seal up all the holes that come in from the outside. At first, I didn't think we had any, but upon closer inspection around the house, there were a few.
Check hidden corners for droppings. Check under the sink, behind the door, and any place where food is stored. If you find a lot of droppings.. you have a problem.
Generally, if you see one in the day time, that's a bad sign as well, you probably have more.
Buy sticky traps instead of the traditionally snapping ones and place them in corners or along the edges of the wall in darker areas.
I'll add a bit more later..

My sister and I once got a rat in the engine bay while parked for the day at UBC. Guess it decided to make a nest in the nice warm engine block. We started backing up, and POP. Rat got caught in the serpentine belt, breaking its neck (still alive) and pulling the belt off all those pullies.
We just stood there and watched it twitch on the ground for a minute or two before it took its last breath. Nothing we could do. :( The engine bay was just COVERED with rat fur. Ick.
The way back home was difficult. No power steering, no alternator, no coolant pump, who knows what else stopped running. Thank goodness we only lived 5km away.

if u can find rat poison which i find is kind of hard nowadays mix it on a piece of bread with peanutbutter as well...the smell of the peanutbutter will attract the rats/mice as well as the taste and they will eat it and die...then its just the simple matter of disposing of them...like the other guy mentioned...bascally if u hafe any pets or small children do not put out poison because will eat it.
another idea is putting out beer in takeout containers....(like the tin asian ones) mice and rats like the taste of beer like most ppl but unlike most ppl the dont have the ability to be able to regurgitate. if they drink the beer they will basically need to puke it but since they are unable to they will suffocate and die.
hope this helps u out

I used one of those and a rat got stuck on it at 3am,so I threw it out into the shed ,but all that was left on the glue trap in the morning was fur.If you are going to use a glue trap check them regularly ,so you don't have sticky rodents running around.

I had a sudden mice explosion years ago. I think it was just 1 or 2 families that suddenly bred and made its home in my house.
in the span of 1 week we caught 14 mice from babies to adult.
good old fashioned victor snap traps with peanut butter.
90% of the time they were killed, half of that time they were eaten by their own kind by the morning, and 10% they lived and we just flushed em.
Poisons aren't cool cause A) u can poison the wildlife outside the home if they get out, B) takes time to take effect.
I placed a glue trap in the garage before. caught a mouse. dunno if it's any good on a rat though.
I fully believe in the old fashioned snap kind. Who cares if they die. They have some nasty ones called T-rex I believe now, looks like 2 crazy killer jaws with teeth that snap shut. looks like it can plain decap the mouse/rat. I'd try those.
Snap traps come in small and large, lay some out, if you catch a bunch and then no more, then problem solved. if you keep catching them more than a week or 2 then I'd say you got a problem.
Also you should know if you have an infestation. droppings would be everywhere.

i'm with the guy who suggested you get a mouse trap. I think the reason those exist is so that you have a cheap way of killing rats without having to clean rat guts up from everywhere.

Spugen, did you kill a rat or a mouse? AFAIK there's a bit of a difference. G/F had a problem with mice. Can't help with rats.
two things about mice:
- glue traps are rather inhumane. If you do use the glue traps, you should check them regularly. If you catch a mouse with this sort of trap, you should immediately put the thing out of its misery rather than letting it squeal and starve to death. I had to stomp on one of the little dudes :(
- mechanical traps "should" kill instantly by snapping the mouse's neck, but may leave a bit of a mess, esp if you don't clean it up right away.
- I understand that rats are truly nasty muthafuckas. Good luck if you have them.

i wouldnt suggest using poison...because like everyone said, 1) it might get animals and children, and 2) if the rat/mouse dies underneath the fridge or somewhere hard to find, then u got a dead body stuck there and stinking u for a while.
to me, glue traps and those snaps work the best...good luck!

So my Tenant went on vacation like a month ago.
I walked past his door yesterday and found the door wide open.
No signs of break-in. Looks like he didn't even lock his door and the wind blew it open.
I'm assuming that this is where the mice/rats are comming from since I never had this kinda problem before. My house is messy, not dirty. I also killed another one yesterday before I went out. Whole lotta screaming and whacking. Fucker wouldn't die.
Set up a bunch of poison in the garage.
Traps and poison inside the house. I don't care how they die, as long as they die. No pets of children in the house, so I don't care. If this doesn't solve the problem, I'm calling an exterminator since I just saw the third one earlier. It got away and it ran away to the fireplace which is where the other 2 were. I'm assuming it's comming from my tenants room downstairs, going next door to the other tenant and going through their fireplace which is connected to ours.
post pics of the fatality!
sticky traps for the win...my buddies house had the longest mice problem before but he managed to kill everyone off with these..we found that they like to to hang out under the fireplace so we sorrounded it and caught at least 2 a day
we've caught so much that 1 day we decided to have a bit of fun..we used like 3 layers of gloves and took 1 of em apart from the sticky trap, placed the sucker in a jar and made made some holes on the cap..watched it run around/jump trying to get out then poured a shot of 151 on the holes..little dude drank a good portion of it and we watched it get drunk and it kept running around and crashing into the glass, slowed down after 2 more minutes, started closing its eyes and took really deep breaths until it passed out...we thought it would wake up after a while but it never did lol

If you use the sticky traps, make sure you still kill them. As someone mentioned, they can eventually break free of them. I usually wrap them (and the trap) up in a newspaper, put it in a plastic bag and give it a good few hits with the spade.

at my workplace, they killed 18 huge rats around this time last year. One of them still managed to survive the traps, and only had a leg caught in the trap itself. My coworker, hoping to do it the ethical way by lopping off it's head in a clear chop with an industrial spade (Stronger and sharper), but missed and hit the body - it wasn't a clean strike and the rat's body was hanging together by a piece of skin and some bone.
