: pick-ups with empty cargo bed?

guys can you enlighten me, what's with all the pick up drivers on the street driving with their big ass pick ups but with empty cargo bed? now I uderstand some need it for work but 99% percent of the time I see them having a mere broom in the bed..a corolla could do the same. Couldnt they get a smaller truck? ie: ranger or tacoma.

quit trolling.
you also posted this in the island off topic.
people need cars for different reasons, some times its a lifestyle choice over necessity.
do you use your car for its exact intended purpose?

Alatar

Yeah, because a small car or SUV can haul around a trailer or a camper just fine.

Think about the intended purposes of a truck, beyond the simple fact that it's got a bed where you can put shit. Towing capacities, ranges/limits, etc. all mean a small truck like a Ranger/Tacoma (that really don't get the greatest fuel economy either) are simply incapable of accomplishing.

OP, I have lots of stuff in the trunk of my truck......... a Ridgeline. Test drive one. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the handling and comfort. Plus the towing capability among other things. It's also incredible in the snow with its 4x4 capability.

Seriously, how many times a year you actually tow your boat? and when you are not towing your boat, couldnt you be driving a smaller sedan instead?

So, what you're saying is they should spend another $20-40g on another vehicle, that they have to insure, store, park, etc. just so they're not driving their truck around. Right.

The shop where I work has a handful of customers who do in fact have two vehicles, but the reason they have the truck is for those 4-6 months a year where they do in fact hook up the boat trailer, or slap on the fifth wheel, camper trailer, etc. to haul around.

And then factor in the other reason you see these big trucks around. Same reason you see all these MDX, RDX, RX400, RX430, X5, X6, X3, ML, GL, LR3, Range Rovers, etc. on the road. Do you suppose all of those people need those gas guzzling SUVs too? I'm not even going to point out the obvious drivers of those vehicles, as it really doesn't matter any more than what you're implying with the obvious drivers of big trucks.

I could understand more when one wants to drive a big ass luxury SUV such as X5 or ML, because the car itself is luxury, comfortable, fast, and also is a symbol of success and status. But what does a pick up truck represent? a blue collar labourer? what kind of lifestyle does it show off? and the car is neither comfortable, nor fast or luxurious. I just dont get it

A pickup truck is utilitarian. It's purpose is for work.

Someone powered by mom and dad wouldn't understand "work", which is why we apparently need to explain it to you.

Seriously? Anyone who buys a vehicle for a status symbol or because they want to impress their neighbours and everyone they drive by is buying a car for the wrong reason. Apart from ruggedness and the ability to go anywhere they want, a truck doesn't represent anything. It's a work vehicle that's capable of hauling 50' boats with ease, or carrying an entire bed of solid oak and cedar, or of fording a river. Why? Because it can. No, not everyone who owns one is going to do any of that, but think of it this way... Why should anyone go out and buy a car that has a V8 that's capable of 400+hp? 99% of the time they're never going to utilize that power. So when they're just going to do the daily drive to work and back, why do they not buy a simple 1.3L 3cyl diesel engine? It's much more efficient and cheaper and practical.

Right?

You're a retard. Motor Trend got an 09 Ram to 60 in 5.7 seconds and did a quarter mile in 14.4 (how fast are most of the vehicles owned by people here?). Trucks are comfortable as hell too, if you aren't driving some work truck shitbox.

You are the retard. a sedan could achieve the same feast with much less effort. That Ram could perform only because alot of modification and engine enhancement has been done to it. With the same effort you could easily make a sedan or a compact suv outrun that ram anytime.

I drive a pick up cause I enjoy being able to use the box and I do a lot of camping which helps me carry gear and get firewood. So what people drive all sorts of vehicles, those exact same people make fun and wonder why some of you drive lowered cars which have to go sideways over speed bumps and can't leave the garage when it snows.

So..asking for input is called trolling, when did revscene started online censorship?

You're not asking for input, you're asking a downright pointless question, where you're just going to end up getting yourself flamed.

Do you know what all those staff who drive those big trucks at UBC use their vehicles for in their off-time? Does it matter to you what they do with their money, or their vehicles?

Is a big-ass honkin' SUV that represents "luxury" really more of a necessity than a big truck? Most people who have big trucks do in fact use them at some point throughout the year, for purposes other than simply driving around. Unlike those people who drive "luxury" SUVs that do in fact just drive around in the city, never going beyond a 50km radius.

AE98
11-15-2009, 12:51 PM
don't get me wrong, I have no problem with other people's preference for vehicles, but as I see it daily it just makes me curious. At the same time like you said moms who drives a ML and Range Rovers constant below 50km/h and soley for buying groceries are equally pointless...to me at least.

You obviously have never sat in some of the Ford pickup trucks. The interior on them are actually nicer then some luxury suvs.
Chip that same truck and you have almost as much hp and way more torque then the bmw and mb suvs.

Explain to me how you can fit a camper or tow a 5th wheel with a X5. Hell lets see how safe it is to have to stop a 6000 lb wakeboard boat with the X5's short wheelbase. What kind of mileage are you gonna make with the X5 towing in the mountains? My parents have a Dodge 3500 Diesel. With a camper and towing a 5000 lb boat (combined weight or truck, trailer, and camper was just over 16000 lbs) they were making just over 20 mpg on the way to Osoyoos. Other then through manning park they almost never had to take it out of 6th gear.

Ive sat in a few trucks. The tundra is super comfortable, as is the harley davidson edition of ford. I drive a sedan but there's atleast 2-3 times I could use a truck in a year.

But really, who gives a shit?

I agree that there are A LOT of Trucks around.

My dad has one with an 8ft bed. I would say he actually uses the Bed about 3-5 times a month. Which is significant because when he uses it, it is packed.

Just because there is nothing in it majority of the time it doesn't mean it isn't useful.

Also, some people buy a F-150 because they like the look of a truck and like the idea of being able to haul around stuff. Also, believe it or not the New F-150's have better mileage then alot of SUV's.

ie. My moms 2003 X5 3.0 has a 93L tank. She only gets about 500KM's out of it (and my mom uses min. 92 octane)
My dads 2009 F-150 has a ~100L Tank. He gets about 700Km's out of it

so YMMV LITERALLY :D:D

Do you know how much big trucks cost? ie. F-150, Tacoma, etc?
They were $50k.
It's only now that they are cheap.
The same F-150 my dad was looking at 3 years ago was $50k. He stole one this year at $31k.
And I think the Tacoma is still at least 40k-50K and the Ridgeline too.

I use my truck to carry job boxes, steel studs, drywall and other building materials all the time. My truck also has more room inside the cab then my wifes Maxima does so whenever we go out we take the truck over the car when I'm not working.

The truck is totally comfortable to I don't know what the hell you're talking about. It also has the same or more options then 95% of the vehicles on the road guaranteed.

What do you drive we'll compare. :)

Many trucks these days are more fuel economic than a lot of cars. The new F150 is very comfortable on the inside and I like driving it.

Why have a truck... people need to pull things, perhaps go dirtbiking or hunting on the weekends, or would like to have that bed in case they need to move things around.

So you expect people to use thier trucks only when they need the available space of a truck and keep it parked for the rest of the time.. are you retarded
