http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/leaving_a_vulgar_comment_online_might_cost_you_you r_job.php

Coles Notes:

- Article in newspaper "What's the craziest thing you've ever eaten?"
- In the article comments, a user posts the word "Pussy"
- Author/Moderator tracks IP to local school
- Author/Moderator calls school
- School IT Administrator tracks the post to a school employee
- Employee "resigns" on the spot

So was the author's actions over the top? Was it a breach of the newspaper's website's own privacy policy?

Here's the follow-up article by the author about the incident:

http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/the-editors-desk/the-editors-desk/2009/11/post-a-vulgar-comment-while-youre-at-work-lose-your-job/comment-page-6/#comments

Over 151 comments there mostly chastising the Author for what he did.

I'm glad my work doesn't track our internet traffic.

Pussy
Pussy
Pussy!

Thats kinda extreme, he could have just meant cats. Some asian countries eat cats.

I wouldn't though, they're too cute to eat.

Reading the comments on his post defending himself is hugely entertaining.

The guy's a dick. From the sense of gloating in his second post announcing the valiant thing he had done, to the tooth-and-nail defense of his actions. If he had simply showed some kind of remorse for his actions this all would've blown over.

How did the author find the identity of the ip address?
I thought only the ISP can link the ip address and the actual identity of the user, and the ISP wouldn't release this information for obvious privacy reasons.
Unless he got the information illegal (i.e. ask friends who work inside the isp), or the school ip is publicly posted?

most messaging board that allows you to post comment usually collect your ip address too. it's not that hard to find your IP

Edit: Ooops Never mind I miss understood your question..

Maybe the school IP is also the school's website.. in that case it easy to link the IP to the actual identity of the user

Ahaha the dumbass locked his twitter from being viewed, after he posted a tweet that the original commentor was a 'jackass' and he is surprised at the number of people supporting the 'jackass'.

the comment system records the ip address but sometimes record the hostname as well. such as pc203.magee.vsb.bc.ca. that shows the computer is in the magee.vsb.bc.ca subnet. if not, a simple traceroute to the ip address will hint what it is too.

Why would that guy track down his ip and to whom it belongs to and report it??? wtf???

i call this story bs... unless it happened in Iran or Saudi Arabia... but then i expect the commenter would be killed ;)

but if such language? was an issue with the website.. why didnt they have any language censors
