You dont know how happy i am. Seriously, my resume doesnt look all that great especially in the automotive field. I may know a lot about cars, but there is still plenty to be learned, and there is only so much u can say on the resume. Im thankful for being given the chance.

Im pretty sure all the ppl that know me know im a total car nut. ive never knocked a car, ok, cept for audis, because they are a bitch to lower!

But to be given the opportunity. this is awesome!

Im sure there are more than a few other guys on RS that work at brian jessel bmw. Don't be afraid to walk up and say hi. Seriously, im not all that scary! Sure im a big shaved head asian that looks like i can eat small children, but everyone that gets to know me, nickname me the happy Lucky buddha.

Me on my day off...

yes, very proud. anyone and everyone knows, to get in a dealership, u gotta start somewhere. Going from a completely different career, i am proud to be a parts advisor to start at. I'm lucky i dont have to start from washing cars =)

Im fortunate enough that i dont have to slave at a job i dont like, and now i have the chance to work for a great company and at something i love. It may be a hard concept to understand, especially for some folk.

And hey, i actually enjoy washing cars... Anyone that knows me, knows i clean my car way too often already. =)

And im 31 this year, going into my umm 4th complete career change. Gotta do it while im still young. =)

Don't judge a person by their job. They may not be in a better job position as you, but may probably be 10 fold richer.

yah, thought about lexus, but lexus give no love. plus they dont even give the time of day.

honestly, im very happy they giving me a chance. if anyone knows how the dealerships are, they are always looking for experienced ppl. thus if u want in, u start at the very very bottom. i was given the chance to start off in parts. my credentials arent the best, but they are willing to give me a try.

and again, its back into something i love, cars!

lets see,

my first career choice was to be an architect. i did everything from being CAD certified before i graduated highschool, to taking on a summer job interning at an architectual firm. sure i was pretty much just a "go-for" but like with every career, u have to start somewhere. Every so often, one of the architects would let me finish duplicating parts of some of the drawings back on paper before putting a copy on the computer. i even did 2 work experiences co/op based on engineering/drafting design at ulstein maritime and burnaby parks n rec, w/ the outcome being the designer of the south court yard @ burnaby north secondary.

2nd career, family business, i still help out, but i have no intent on taking it over.

3rd career, computer related. switched majors in uni, eventually graduated in business financing. however right out of uni, u take whatever job u can, and working for a few companys data processing (again with getting into a company or a new career path means starting at the bottom)

4th career, furthering progressing in financials, dabbling in online day trading, decided to take the CSC (canadian securities cert). Though the money is out there for the grabbing. its also not something i decided to pursue.

This isnt including all the little jobs i did here and there, working retailing, grocery boy, warehouse, and even starting companies that ultimately did not work and fail (FlyersBC Media inc). ALL JOBS IN YOUR LIFETIME BRING EXPERIENCE, ON AND OFF PAPER

Its when i was asked to take over a position at Advance was when i realized, i actually like this! And thus after a year off, i really wanted to get back into the automotive industry.

So my suggestion, if u really have no idea what to choose as ur path, dont get discouraged, most ppl, and this is true, not just BS out of me, but most ppl go thru at least 7 career changes in their life time. I think they count little jobs here and there as a career too, but it just means it takes a lot of time for some ppl to find what they are good at & what they like doing.

If you want a more finite answer for yourself, i suggest seeing a career councillor. they actually went to school to learn how to help ppl decide what to go to school for! They will help find what ur good at, where your skills lay, where they can be applied, and even probably figure out if u will be happy doing that job. haha, im just happy i discovered all this before i retire at 65 hahahaha...

Wow congratulations man, mind if I ask what your previous career's were as this is your 4th change? I'm having a hard time trying to decide what I want to go into... haha

!SG
11-21-2009, 06:43 AM
yeah yeah, i know some of you are like "wtf, its just a parts advisor job" and most are thinking, "so u will be stock boy huh"...

I got into a dealership with ZERO dealership experience. Most ppl that apply start at the very bottom, washing cars, valet, "go fors". Im thankful they recognized my ability and even more thankful for the oppurtunity. Those that do work at a dealership know exactly how hard it is. Its within line with some of the trade work out there, and if any of you work in the trade industry, u know you have to start at the bottom, apprentice, and eventually after some years, be accepted as full feldge. I never look down upon someones job. im sure there are more aspects to the job, i know for sure i will have to brush up on my reynolds system use.

and besides, again, i get to play around with cars =P BEAMERS, whats so bad with that????

Come on by in the future, those that knew me when i was at Advance, know i always welcome a visit.

If you acutally know anything about the industry a good parts guy for the techs can be really good to your business.

 absolutely correct.

just imagine a partsman that doesn't know a control arm from a tie rod dealing with fast-paced shop enviroment and monke...err...techs, especially flat rate techs.

he/she will get a new arsehole torn into them by techs all day long cus their productivity cannot be hindered by stupidity.

ugh i hate reynolds.. so 1980's...

btw, add me to the list of multi-career 'suckers'
- started off wanting to be an architect (took 4 years of drafting in school)
- saw Top Gun and decided I was going to be a fighter pilot (joined cadets)
- got my ppl but realised I would never be a fighter pilot cuza my eyes, so I decided to be a commercial pilot instead, and spent $40k on that.
- got all my licences and decided I did not want to spend 4+ years working in buttfuck BC
- spent 6 years in the hospitality industry, which actually was a ton of fun, made great friends, and learned how to deal with people properly and what real customer service is!
- now I'm selling cars and after 2 years+ I've learned more in this business then you can learn in any school. Honestly.

If you spend your whole life in one career, you may be exceptionally good at that, but you'll suck arse at everything else. I'd rather be a well rounded person.

i gave up trying to be an architect after i found out i would have to spend 15+ years to be recognized, and thats only if i was good.

- 4 years civil eng
- 2 years minimum in architect course or school (depends which education route u go)
- 5 years minimum apprenticing at either a architect school or under another architect, then maybe, just maybe, if ur good, then u get ur name out.

I've already committed to being an auto service tech myself, I got waitlisted for one of the programs at BCIT. I'm in my last year of HS and took my school co-op program again, taking my work experience this time at JP Toyota in Surrey (I was at Nissan last year).

One of the guys there mentioned to me that I should go into parts (not sure exactly what he said, but something about them getting benefits but techs don't?), which I considered and sounds promising, but there's no point in doing so since I won't learn anything I can apply to my own car. If anything, the service manager is probably gonna hire me on as a lot boy when the school work experience ends, knowing that I'm at the bottom, but due to the fact I've got experience with a wrench, I kind of know what I'm doing..

Even I had/thought about multiple jobs and I'm only 17.Thought about racing professionally when I was in grade 8, but I missed the talent threshold years ago for a million reasons. I've already taken and quit/got laid off of jobs as a plastic part manufacturer, McSlave, gas boy, sales in a retail clothing store, and parts person at Crappy Tire (two of those jobs didn't last one shift because I felt like I was thrown under the bus during training and I felt that I would be extremely unhappy working there), and now I'm looking for work with little luck. I've also thought about teaching, but my marks weren't good enough for UBC/SFU, and maybe if I lose the motivation of being a tech, I'll go into teaching.

Lots of really good insight on career choice in here, thought I'd share my piece.

Yeah it’s definitely very hard to find a job you like and you can actually stick to. On top of that, finding a good job, that leads to a career you like, and that’s not at the bottom of the barrel to begin with...is extremely lucky.
I find this thread inspirational, I like what you’ve done with the place.
Keep posting, maybe share how your first 2 weeks at the job go. It will remind us all of that one happy time when we started something new and exciting.

Props Lucky Buddha looking guy aka !SG, all the best on your new career path!

thanx, but thats one part of the experience that really didnt help my cause.

I got to chat with another HR from another dealership, and even some friends in the field like niteraven. My gained experience working at Advance would not give me any edge at applying to a dealership. Though some similar if not more job duties can be applied to both, dealership experience is just that, dealership experience. Ive looked at some other places, and applied at some other dealerships. My resume was tossed aside faster than parsley on a juicy steak (mmMmm steak...)

I really thank you guys for all the kind words. Im really psyched about giving my first try at a dealership, and at a BMW one at that! I was really surprised to hear that Brian Jessel liked to meet each and every new employee. Some places ive worked that, the big boss would not even know you. You'll be lucky to get a generic letter with their signature stamped on. So that in its own, was very cool. Thats totally something i would do as a boss. Why not meet ur staff? If your staff doesnt feel like they can tell you a problem, how can u resolve the issue if u dont know about it right?

niteraven speaks the truth! if anything i have learned working at any job, is that its a whole team system. co ordinated effort to bring a great end result to a satisfied customer. everyone on the team counts. from the first person that greats them, to the last person that sends them off.

and yup, im pretty pumped!

for those of you that do work at Brian Jessel, dont get pissed at me if i constantly ask where is where. its gonna take me a bit to get my barrings. im not a human GPS, and i know for sure Brian Jessel BMW doesnt have those mall directory "you are here" maps around.

BJBMW is buying out property around that area to store cars lol. They're expanding fast! I remember the last time I went to the Service department, the cars waiting to be serviced are packed in the back lot :lol

!SG
11-22-2009, 08:06 AM
There isnt much detail as of yet to the 2ndary lot. As far as i can figure out, they are expanding, probably because brian jessel bmw already out grew its current lot.

You ever try visiting? besides the fact there are beamers EVERYWHERE :lol, it seems they are using just about every ounce of space on the lot!

You know a dealership is busy and out growing themselves, when u walk into the show room, and the cars parked on display in there seem a tad bit closer than other dealerships. From my experience, you dont bring in inventory, especially cars, unless you know you will be selling them. otherwise, its just too costly to keep around.

woot final weekend of freedom =P, which i honestly dont mind. i look forward to being back on a regular schedule =)

ugh i hate reynolds.. so 1980's...

btw, add me to the list of multi-career 'suckers'

I'd rather be a well rounded person.

well, if thats the case, i hope i can change your opinion.

Those that have delt with me on and off RS, and when i was at Advance, know i pride myself on providing the best customer service, no BS, treat every person with respect attitude. I do not plan on changing that fact about me.

the thing u gotta understand is that if u have ordered any part from any dealership, u will see the part number is like 000-000-000L or something. u know how many possibilities there are in that part number? slip ups happen, its however how well the person deals with it that counts. acknowledging of the slip up, and swift action is what matters. accidents, mix ups, they happen, no matter how hard you train or do well at ur job. Parts guys are human too.

I'm Mike in the drive thru. The really young looking asian guy.

- Boundary, usually filled up by 7:30am
- Lougheed/broadway good until 3pm (gotta move behind mcdonalds or get lucky and find a spot on boundary) I suggest making a friend that finishes at 3pm, like me lol
- Street behind mcdonalds/harley
- Mcdonalds parking lot, if you have a parking pass or if you want to test your luck.
- There is another street beside lot 2, across the street from the dealership (quite a bit of a walk)

You'll see my white civic si parked on lougheed until 3pm.

Wolfe will soon be used, from I've been told. You'll find out soon enough.
So far, we have spa (detail), alloy rim repair, colourworks stationed there.

EDIT: Got bored, so I made you some maps. Highlighted in red is where you can park.

So my first day. OMG THERE ARE SO MANY PPL!!!!

I forgot most of the ppl's names already,

I remember Todd, the parts guy, because he drove me over to wolfe briefly to see the other lot, and also because we share the same hair cut.

So my first day, i was upstairs filling forms for a bit, took the whmis test, went over some proceedures, then by the time that was over, it was lunch break. was bored, and so went to n-motion to say hi, and chat. went back got to finally meet the staff, met a lot of ppl A LOT OF PPL!!! i dont even remember their names, i feel bad!

but so this is how things goes, there is another new parts guy there, he's got more experience than me and plus hes in since monday, and so he is being trained first. im gonna be working in shipping for the next while, which is cool, so i get a hang of the system, how parts work there, and so on, and there are a lot of parts! a LOT! its like bmw canadian tire in there!, parts everywhere but no bob villa look alike!

So for the next few weeks, im gonna dress down so i can do parts handling with them.

Overall, a great first day and experience meeting everyone. Everyone really does feel like family in there, so its very cool! I actually kinda know one of the parts guys, he was at honda before, as the parts guy i delt with =P

I've heard the same from a friend who worked there. First few months was all rainbows and smiles. Then as time sets in, it was just a nightmare.

In any case, me being a parts guy myself, congrats! If you like working in the auto industry but not nesccesarily with fixing cars, parts is a great department. Well, first official day of work! i just missed their order of shop shirts so i had to sport my own Revscene shirt today =P

Anyhow, they've given me a couple of tshirts to sport the Brian Jessel BMW logo for now, to tie me til either they place an order (in a few weeks, which i may be moved into parts officially) but i really like doing shipping for now. the crew is awesome! I guess the one in charge of shipping (i guess we call her the shipping manager) has taken the time and even stayed late teaching and answering all my dumb questions.

It sounds kinda stupid to some of u guys, but going form small shop, to highly organized big dealership like this is a dream for someone thats slightly OCD. organization is as top as can be, and an efficient system worked out. Parts guys work closely with shipping guys and vice versa. the whole system is just amazing!

I stayed late a bit to learn off of the manager, and she was kind enough to take me under her wing to teach me. I feel a little bad because the other new guy, they threw in like that. while ive been given the chance to learn at a slower pace, without the high traffic pressures.

just very amazed how everything works, how everyone has their part of the job.

its much different coming from a shop, where i did sales, shipping, receiving, parts, payroll, book keeper, mechanic, installer, human resources, janitor at times, inventory stock... so honestly, im having a hard time figuring out what im suppose to do, and what im not suppose to do.

but man, those parts guys are insane, yes its very fast pace, but they RUN!

!SG
11-26-2009, 05:28 PM
My learning curve has been very interesting.

Seems like every possibly scenario that can happen, has happened, but in a good way, i get to learn from it. Kinda like those "what if?" situations.

It just amazes me how they keep order in there with soooooo many parts. Every car has different rotors, pads, air filters, oil filters. these are just regular stuff, then u got the custom stuff, body panels, covers, bumpers, GLASS even! then tires, wheels, hoses... the list goes on and on.

and the pace at which the parts guys work at is intense! you got ur tech mechanics blasting in asking for parts, the parts guys running, no... sprinting to get the part for them, while the shipping/receiving guys are constantly getting parts in to put into inventory and stock them back up!

Everyone works in teams, as a system. one kink in the system and bam, everything gets jammed! Just makes u really realized what team work is all about!

Today, i learned about "cores" and "warranties" tommorow, i will absorb what i learned! :D

- day starts off for me at 7:30. we get a list of whats coming in for the day. shipping companies drop stuff off for us so the bay is usually packed, and thus u gotta move ur ass to clear room as other shipping companies keep coming in and dropping more stuff off. we are talking about local tire wholesalers, ups, puralator, dhl, greyhound, etc...

- so u get a list like 50 pages long of parts that are suppose to come in, parts on back order, specially ordered parts. we are trying to find them, tick them off the list, seperate where they go in the inventory, all while more couriers drop off more stuff. its endless.

- by noon, everything is seperated and we start putting the packs together. thus like customers place orders, we put them together to either ship out or to drive out for tommorow. we also tag items that have been spoken for, place them seperately. putting packages together for the driver to deliver the next day. we place that on the side for him, and usually he is double checking in the morning when we are unpacking the shipments.

- 2-4pm, couriers come by and pick up the packages we put together for shipping. all through out the day, we are helping the parts guys put their packages together. it might be a customer waiting outside for the part, or it can be the mechanic waiting for the part. there are like 99 million different parts from a little metal clip, to a whole sub frame! all are catalog'd, all have their own part numbers, all are organized so that everyone can find them when need be.

thats why i keep thinking, OMG, thank you for putting me in shipping. this gave me the chance to see and learn how the system works! if they threw me in parts right away, i may be having a mental break down right now. the parts guys have to keep the mechanics happy, the waiting customers happy, and even sales guys that want to throw in some floor mats for the cars. everything must be cleared thru the parts guys first! no free for grabs because that will throw off the inventory!

for anyone else, im sure it will be overwhelming, it still is for me, but im slightly OCD, and thus, the organization is an absolute treat for me.

i just touched upon the warranty and core parts on friday from one of the shippers. im sure every dealership has a similar system, but now i really really really really do understand why parts and shippers work so closely and organized. i cant even imagine what the service side is like. ppl coming in, booking appointments, having the right tech work on what. to me, it looks like a football play, but you are only giving 1 down to get the touchdown.

then you got all the internals, the valets, lot staff, just wow! I dont see many slackers, but what i do see sometimes is everyone waiting on 1 guy to finish so that the rest can move. u are only as fast as ur slowest member. and i dont plan on being the slowest, nor be just an individual, but a team player.

Im just happy to be there, my first week and everyone's been so well received and nice to me. I was expecting marlene (my current buddy learning partner) to be killing me right now from my endless questions. thank god for her patience. :D

ill do some research in the learning center if i can in the next little while. there may be a way.

found out you can rewire the cd changer in the trunk of the e46's to accept an ipod adapter via a friend.

but the sounds of it you may need to either do a slight custom on an aftermarket bt unit.

dependent on options that came from factory (tel prep prewiring and certain production dates) for bt.

same for ipod as well. CD changers cannot be used in conjunction with ipod retrofit kits.

and no, the lil button on steering wheel with the guy speaking icon doesn't mean you have tel prep.

Your job/career at any workplace is only as good as the manager(s) there and your coworkers make it. It's nice to see another parts guy that takes pride in his work and willing to learn the trade through hard work. If you have spare time at work, go log on to extranet (you should have access to it already, or someone there should be able to give you access), and view the different topics in the knowledge library. There is a wealth of knowledge there that will help you out immensely. You'll find that BMW's are very different from other cars like Hondas and Toyotas, and when you come across things you don't understand (and can't find anyone to explain it to you clearly), you can usually find the answers in the knowledge library.

!SG
12-08-2009, 08:34 PM
thanx for the heads up, i was planning on doing some studying time upstairs in the library room after the holidays.

i need to brush up on my reynolds knowledge and the ETK program and i know they have access to all the books up there!

Its just amazes me because i came from a small car mod shop, and all the organization i wished we had, are a must and in place at a large dealership. it cannot survive without it! The parts manager is absolutely cool. He keeps asking me if everything is ok, haha. And the team, i guess my immediate boss right now, is really cool. She bares with all the questions i have, and basically procedures.

eg, today, while putting parts away in the remstar machine (this huge organizing storing and retreiving machine) i found parts in a section that should have been empty. Sounds really stupid but i just cant go and grab it to move it because its in inventory at that location and thus if anyone else tries to look for it, and gets the same problem, we are all screwed! in the end, problem solved, but was cool seeing that my thought process of what to do was correct and verified by my immediate boss. I know it sounds stupid, but being on the other end of the stick, trying to look for something that someone else put away in a sloppy way, and cant find it, is really damn annoying!

Ive always worked for small to medium sized companies before, and thus working for a big company like this is somewhat surprising and a welcome change.

And hey, working with ppl that actually are car guys as well is an added bonus.

i dont plan on being the weakest link in the chain in the parts department. ive never been the slacker, so its also a personal pride thing to knowledge up, learn up, and at least try to keep up with the fast pace guys there. so far the only thing i got going is organization, and fast typing, hahaha. as i said before, im still getting lost in such a huge building! i walked thru the mechanics bay for the 2nd time ever since starting at brian jessel's.

boy i miss the scent of motor oil and general metal smell =P

well, i was in ur position before, front line, sales/service. i dont mind dealing with all the variety of ppl. customer service was/is what im good at. ppl dont realize how long it takes to get somethign done on a car. they may have went to some budget place before, so you have to remind them, if they want that type of speed, no problem, we will just have to over look some safety issues and possibly even say we did somethings, but not actually do them. after the brief talk, most are understanding. Whoever said that sales n service is something ANYONE can do, is full of shit, and are arrogant fucks. It may be the single most over looked profession, that DOES require finesse, and a lot of personel skills.

i donno about chill n relaxed. in the morning, we are rushing to help the driver get on his way, putting his orders and lists together. all that before 1030, then after that we are putting all the other orders for the parts advisor guys together, and meet the demands of the techs (mechanics). we are running around putting away parts while helping getting and locating parts.

SG, keep an eye out for OEM 19" style 230 wheels for the e92's, you might get these rims on a lease return that the dealership might want to unload. A set of these wheels brand new are too expensive and finding a used set is very hard.

!SG
12-11-2009, 05:12 AM
ohh, you want a set?

hmm, u got a picture? there are soooooo many styles that i have a hard time keeping track.

we have been moving a lot of sets lately because of the demand for winter tire packages. its actually kinda crazy! That one winter @ advance, we moved sooooo many tires, but this is insane. im talking about parts advisors, and even us in shipping helping move sets upon sets upon sets of tires to help the tech's out. at the same time, im trying to help find room for all of them! the amount of volume being moved is just... wow! on top of stock orders, and stuff.

just the other day, i go put some filters into stock. im like why do we need to stock this many? that was until i got to the location and looked up :O wtf?! where did all the filters go from yesterday?! i swear there was like 20 left! all the parts advisors are running around, its kinda funny because its like a hockey team skating on the floor, the difference is we dont all stand up to sing the national anthem in the morning =P

!SG

they ARE nice, but having directional spokes + directional tires + difference sized n offset tires and wheels means it truely is a true staggered setup. each wheel and its design is meant for each corner of the car.

I've changed those rims before, they aren't 4 different wheels, just staggered front and rear
19x8 or 19x9s
oem tires are just inside/outs potenza re050a

if you want to talk about 4 different wheels, the new x6 hybrid has different rims on each corner, due to being more aerodynamic :D

!SG
12-19-2009, 05:19 PM
how so? then if u dont have a left and right 19x9, the twist in the spoke will be all twisting to one side only. i guess its not a big deal, unless ur super picky.

ohhh you mean the dark gunmetal set? well technically its 4 different wheels as the tires they come are directional. but because the offset for the fronts are different from the rears, that makes the tag for them as being "front left, front right, rear left, rear right"

haha, i would know. i unloaded all of them, and moved almost all the sets upstairs into storage! =P

if u happen to work at brian jessel bmw, the green tape marking off the those sets was done by me =P

Aluminum sundries required and the waiting for back ordered parts I have no complaints at all. I look forward to doing more business with you guys :)

OH! if the BrianJessel BMW tags (white sticky notes w/ your company name and invoice number hand written on) look barely legible, thats probably my hand writting hahaha =P

Yeah, its an absolutely great parts team im a part of. The thing is we all care about making sure everything is put together as perfectly as possible. If there is a door panel that comes in, we have like 3 or 4 ppl going thru it to make sure there was no damage from shipping. We generally all give a helping hand loading the deliver van up, and all care about how its packaged in there!

The cool thing is since ive been there, we have all had the same general idea, high quality service and keeping the shipping bay as clean as possible. We even had Brian Jessel swing thru the shipping area and impressed him how organized we are. Ive been moving as much as i can to the storage rooms, and everyones been pitching in keeping every area in parts well organized. It sounds stupid but that organization means everything can be found faster, everything can be packaged better, and everyone knows where everything is.

Yeah back orders are a bummer. Its a bummer for everyone, and even for me because im still learning and understanding how the paper work works for backorder parts. We've now got a little system going in the back for anything backordered from germany. It sucks because unless you know how the paper work works, you will be digging thru the pile of parts that came in, in the morning, for that single part, only to find out after frantically looking for it, its backordered...
