I don't think I've ever been so happy in my life for a fast food place to open up! It's at garden city and blundell and is about 2 minutes from my place.... Onion rings + teen burger here I come!

A&W is too expensive and their burgers are too small.
None of the fast food is cheap anymore. Even Mcdonalds prices are high now for a small ass burger, medium fries when they used to be large, and a small drink.
+1 for A&W burgers but because the McDonald fries are so much better I often choose them over the rest.

isn't it worst at Wendys? the meals come with a small drink and small fries, and you have to choose to upgrade to medium sized fries/drink or upgrade even further to large fries/drinks

Where in the mall is it? Haven't been back to Van in awhile. Buddies of mine used to work at Church's Chicken and the Subway 10+ years ago. Hooked all of their friends up like nuts!

and how much does a McDonald's meal cost? at least $7 or $8 after tax.
I rather pay the extra dollar for better quality.

Isn't the whole point of fast food to be cheap and tasty? If it's not both of those, it fails.

I've been cooking alot more at home, and I can defiantly say cooking wholesome meals at home is more fucking expensive than fast food.
for example I made a dish called pastitsio the other day.
not my recipe though as the guy refuses to refuses to put cinnamon, and skimps on eggs, and cheese. but anyways
http://greekgourmand.blogspot.com/2009/01/pastitsio-perfection.html
The Meat Sauce
1 ½ lbs. ground veal (or beef, though minced lamb can also be used)
1 large or 2 medium-sized yellow onion(s), finely diced
1 tsp. (5 ml.) dried rosemary
2 bay leaves
2 cloves of garlic, grated
1 ½ cups (375 ml.) fresh strained tomato juice (or ¼ cup tomato paste diluted in 1½ cups of water.)
¼ cup (60 ml.) white wine
¼ cup (60 ml.) Greek extra virgin olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
The Pasta
1 lb. of Greek No.2 pasta (or Bucatini, or Ziti, as noted above)
2 tbsp. (30ml.) Greek extra virgin olive oil
3 egg whites, beaten (the yolks will be used in the béchamel sauce)
¼ cup (60 ml.) grated Kefalotyri (or Parmesan cheese if you try but cannot find the Greek cheese)
The Béchamel Sauce
4 cups (1 litre) of scalded milk
1 cup (250 ml.) all-purpose flour
¾ cup (180 ml.) grated Kefalotyri (or Parmesan cheese if you really cannot find the Greek cheese)
½ cup (125 ml.) of salted butter
3 egg yolks, well beaten
½ - 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
when you buy all the ingredients, it comes up to 35-40 dollars. And could probably be finished in a day or 2 between 2-3 people.
Even a basic stifado dish for me costs 15 dollars. And I can finish it after one serving.
I guess alot of people here still let their parents do the shopping/cooking.
Must feel good to mooch.

majin - thanks for your awesomely cool recipe and story.
I'm fat... but it doesn't take away from the fact that these fast food joints went from a standard sized meal to decreasing their sizes while constantly increasing their prices. If you paid for better quality, sure. I can say fastfood hasn't increased in quality. If they kept the same prices but decreased the quantity it wouldn't be as bad, however the case here is they are increasing the prices, while at the same time downsizing their sizes and EXPECTING you to pay even more for the same items as before.
If I wanted small fries and small drink, I'd order a kids meal. At least that shit comes with a toy. :lol

small fries and a drink were standard in the 50's. Our gluttony has forced to eat more, cheaper, and faster.
and yeah my recipe is a little different. I found my mom's recipe book the other day.
for the bechemal sauce,
1 litre of milk
3/4 of a cup of butter
2/3 of a cup of flour
2/3 of a cup of parmasan
6 eggs
salt pepper, nutmeg
melt butter but keep stiring with a whisk.
slowly whisk in the flour and let it cook for 3-4 minutes on medium high.
take off of heat and add milk slowly while whisking
after adding milk, put back on medium high and you have to constantly whisk, for 4 minutes or until it thickens/boils.
take off of heat. Add parmasen cheese.
whisk the 6 eggs well, and slowly add while whisking. Once complete stirred, add salt pepper and nutmeg. set aside.
the meat sauce
700 grams of lean ground beef/veal/lamb
1 chopped up large onion
5 cloves of chopped up garlic
1 can of crushed plum tomatoes (if not crushed chop them up)
1 stick of cinnamon
5-6 cloves
2 bay leaves
tbps of salt, tsp of pepper and allspice if you want it.
wine to deglaze pan
saute onions in olive oil.
add garlic once done sauting and ground meat
once down browning, deglaze pan with wine
add the can of tomatoes (to be specific a 400-500 gram of chopped tomatoes with juice)
add bayleaves, cloves and cinnamon stick.
simmer for 45 minutes to one hour.
Pasta: buy a box of pene pasta (454 grams... superstore sells it) my mother used a special type of spaghetti, but i like the penne better.
whisk 2 eggs well and MIX well with the pasta after it is cooked. this will bind the pasta together when baked.
assembly. In a cassarole pan ( i bought one from superstore... dont have dimensions) put pasta, then meatsauce and then bechemal sauce, spreading evenly. put in oven for 375 degrees for about 1 hour or until golden brown on top. Let it cool for 20 minutes and enjoy. I like to eat it with a good greek feta on the side.
it will last you 4 days if you live alone.
i'd rather go to Kam Do for a baked pork chop on rice + cold lemon tea for $7.50 to 8 tax and tip in lol

if you really want cheap, you can't beat yaohan food court. $5.99 for 3 choices + a ton of rice, it's enough for two meals for me. true, RPM is like $5 for similar deal, but they always have food that's going bad and they serve it anyways.

empty lot
Nice, that area needs more variety in terms of fast food and the only reason why I care is cause its close to my place ...
Funny thing is a couple of days ago, my friend and I were just discussing how crazy expensive it is to eat at A&W ... considering its going around $9 bucks for a meal there now ... isn't Wendy's going for around $7 bucks for a comparable meal ...
But A&W rootbeer is still the best ...
i believe its open now. drove past 2 days ago and saw customers inside. wonder how late the drive through is open till.

Regular, just changed fries to onion rings(both of them), came up to just under $20 if I can remember, about 6months ago?
they charge extra for onion rings dont they?
so 7-8 bucks for the combo + onion rings would come around 20 bucks

It's been open for close to a month now I believe. Been there quite a few times now over the past few weeks and the quality is better than the one in Fleetwood.
