: How often do you "thank" someone while you're driving?

You know what I mean? Like just simpily putting your hand up when you have to cut lanes, or smiling or nodding your head if someone purposely brake to let you pass.

I find that 'thanking' someone on the road make it so much easier to get around. If someone cut in front of me but at least make a gesture for saying sorry, that makes me feel a little bit better and I won't honk them.

i thx when the other driver is in front or beside me. Not when they are behind, due to rear window tint unless i have my window/sunroof open.

Ya I make thank you gestures when they let me into the lane or when a side street is narrow and they let me go first. I don't expect them to do it, but when they do it's nice.

i try to thank people everytime. even with window tint, it's normally visible when you thank someone behind you. only time i don't thank someone is when they do everything in their power to not let you in/yield for you.

do it as often as i can. but i also expect from other drivers , but dont get nearly as enough...

"expect nothing and you will be pleasantly surprised when actually get something"

sounds like a crock of shit, but it helps keep me from getting overly angry at other drivers :lol

I thank people all the time, usually by waving or putting my hands up, if they let me cut lanes or if I am turning. its a courtesy thing that I grew up learning. They dont HAVE to let you cut lanes or turn, but they choose to help you get to where you are going faster. thanks for that!

like tiger_handheld said, not a lot of people will thank you back though if you help them out.....especially those female mainland china drivers in their RX400h, X5, ML500.......thinking they're all up there with their SUVs looking down on us as if it was the law to let them cut lanes.

I think it's more like they don't have a clue that you just let them pass....or anything that's happening on the road for that matter.....

Lately I see no thanking going on in my city (kelowna) i barely see people signaling before a lane change here. I hate it when I let some one in and there is no appreciation.

I always thank them. Its jsut automatic now.

anyways, those who dont let you switch lanes, even though theres so much space infront, are jackasses. Like theres space, but they have to speed up so I dont get into their lane

I thank people very often as a courtesy to acknowledge their gesture, particularly in traffic jams.

I usually don't expect anyone to return the favour. The only assumption I make is that, unintentionally or not, everyone can be a jerk on the road, including myself at times. Must exercise defensive driving.

People are usually good about returning a 'thanks/sorry' gesture when they notice I let them in, or if they've done something a bit wrong (i.e. cut in a bit close).

If there was no acknowledgment it depends on the severity of my own adjustment to their action. If very little or nothing, I just shrug it off. If I had to actively compensate but in a relatively mild manner, I usually flash high beams indicating "I saw what you did there and I hope you saw what I did for us too." If I had to do a sudden course correction, the horn gets some action.

huh. i've never flashed my highbeams for that purpose before, only to signal to someone i'm giving them the right of way. i'll give it a try =)

I thank people all the time. Not only when I'm driving, but in person (for example when someone holds the door open for me). They taught us to be courteous in elementary school, and it's probably the single most useful lesson. ;) Maybe it's just a West side thing, but who knows. :p

If people cut me off/run a stop sign etc. I flash my high-beams at them. If they're a real ass I just blind them with my bi-xenons for a block or two. :D That's really rare though, as they'd have to do something major + extremely dangerous like accidentally running me into oncoming traffic. Then the horn gets used too. I do get a bit pissed here and there, but never all-out angry, there's no point. Never given anyone the finger on the road.

If everyone stopped acting so damn righteous, I'd be willing to bet that 95% of fender benders would be completely avoided. Just the other day I was cut off by some N who blew through a stop sign (semi-controlled, AND I was on his right). I slowed, assuming he was going to run it, and sure enough he did. Defensive driving ftw.

Give them a peace sign for letting me in or helping me out. But if they are being a jackass, especially when someone doesn't let me merge it's on less finger.

I always thank ppl if they let me in or if its down a narrow street and they let me pass. But I never or very rarely get a thanks when I let someone in or let someone pass. Drivers are getting less considerate of everyone.

I used to do it a lot... but I'm starting to get lazy.

Although it's not mandatory, to me, it's a given driving code that during a construction merge, you let one in, you go, next guy lets one in, then he goes, etc.

It's when either the idiot in front of me lets in 2 cars, or the 2nd guy tries to force into the merge, then that pisses me off.
Or when two cars don't let me merge in.

I do it all the time. It doesn't take much for me to throw my hand up as a gesture and in turn it does so much more then people think. Like OP said I know if somebody does something stupid to me I get road rage but if they at least acknowledge that they did something stupid and just say my bad with a hand gesture i'm cool with it.

I try to do it as much as I can..

All kinds of tiny things as it actually puts me in a better mood when I receive a tiny little hand gesture so I try and do the same!

Whenever its obvious the other person is being nice. e.g. when trying to merge into a busy lane from a petrol station or when he moves over to the side in those narrow lanes where the home owners decide to park on the road instead of using their garage.

I don't see very many people do it, but I know my brother does it all the time (as he already said) so I've picked up the habit (not that I'm driving on the streets yet) and I intend to use the habit once I'm driving properly.

I'll have to remember the sudden traffic stop thing, that sounds like a pretty good idea since people in Vancouver have a tendency to not pay attention to anything.

I thank people on narrow roads. Also when merging, even though it is my turn to go in. If enough people do it, it might catch on. It takes very little effort.

Someone should invent a "Thanks" light. I'd get one.

I pretty much thank and give out a wave/hand gesture whenever I can, like when they let me cut in or merge in their lanes or at a intersection. Even when it's raining and cold outside, I'll roll down my window a little and stick my hand out as a "thank you" gesture for a second then roll the windows back up ASAP :)

Exactly, just roll the window down and stick out the wave. I know when people do it to me I appreciate it so I always try and do it.
