It's the Mazda that’sguaranteed to send rivals into a spin! These illustrations are the bestyet of the forthcoming RX-7– an all-new two-seater sports car, completewith a turbocharged rotary engine.

Although this model will be anatural successor to the RX-8, the logical RX-9 badge is to be shunnedin favour of RX-7 – evoking memories of the rear-wheel-drive Mazdaproduced in various forms between 1978 and 2002.

Reports fromJapan have revealed that new design chief Ikua Maeda has alreadysketched plans for the next RX-7, and is said to be pushing thethree-door model to the firm’s board of directors. Mazda has chosen touse the light and compact Renesis 16X Wankel engine – the same unit asfitted to 2007’s Taiki concept car.

With an equivalentcapacity of 1.6 litres to improve torque, and the addition of aturbocharger to boost power beyond 300bhp, the RX-7 will be much moresporty than the RX-8.

By sticking with a rotary engine, Mazdawill ensure the model can be adapted to run on hydrogen in future.Plus, it would retain the RX-8’s appeal as the only rotary-engined carin production.

Rumours that an RX-7 concept could debut atOctober’s Tokyo Motor Show came to nothing; it may not appear untilnext year’s event. A production model would then follow early in 2011.

I think we can all agree the rear looks like a BMW. Front is more like Acura grill, Mazda 6 lights and lower grill and general shape is Sky or Solstice-esque.

The short height frontnfenders like the Fd, and the S7 corner lights who's shape has been imitated on the Rx8 for headlights.

i don't see the similarities you see. if anything, it takes cues for the front end from the RX8. the FD doesn't have the raised fender ridges like the 8 does, which has carried over into this concept.

as for the rear

the SA didn't have a contoured deck like this concept does. but guess what, the FD does.

the SA had a, for the most part, flat rear horizon. if not slightly sloped downward. the FC had more of a "Rear Deck" than the SA or FB did.

i'll give you similarities in the markers of the FD and the head lights of the concept, but they are stretched at best.

The FC kinda had this, but the FC/FD had more of a rear deck. The newer car gets the new school flare ala the RE Amemiya piece on the FD's rear lights.
