For all road users out there (especially UBC-ers), have you all noticed lately that there are cars sitting in the middle of the island on the way into UBC on marine drive?

They are usually some sort of sedan (accord, protege), with a cone sitting on top of the roof with two people in it...
I also saw one at the end of arthur liang bridge heading into richmond (at the YVR airport sign)

anyone have any idea what this is all about?

this has been bugging me for a while cuz its pretty random...lol

it's been there for a long time now. i noticed these cars on the ubc highway for the past month. there are people sitting in them too. i think it may be a police strategy to get people to slow down.

usually construction workers put cones on top of their cars when they are working.. to let city know they are construction workers.

But rageguy's idea seems legit.

I'm pretty sure they have something to do with traffic-flow statistics

I've also noticed a 1.6 EL with a cone on its roof hiding in the bush on Knight bridge southbound as well. I think they have something to do with traffic-flow / speed statistics cuz if you look carefully, there are some newly installed "air tubes" on the ground across the lanes, right at where those hidden cars are

Don't know if it's related, but I saw two vehicles parked on the side of Garden City between Westminster and Alderbridge. They had some traffic-flow label/sign on the doors.

According to my friend who was also doing that,

They are helping the police to monitor traffic speed. (i.e. keeping an eye on cars going at speed, they have direct contact to an advisory police officer)

I was just going to post this question as well.

There were cars just after the Alex Frasier bridge on the surrey/delta side and I've seen them at UBC as well.

I think they usually come out twice a year, once around now and once in the spring time.

I've been wondering about these guys for a while. Any one?

Arthur Laing who was a Member of the Canadian House of Commons from Vancouver. Arthur Laing died before the bridge was officially opened on May 15, 1976 (traffic had been using it since August 1975).

The Arthur Laing Bridge is a four-lane, high-level bridge carrying Grant McConachie Way over the North Arm of the Fraser River between Vancouver and Richmond, British Columbia's Sea Island where the Vancouver International Airport is located. Two parallel independent unpainted steel box girders make up the main spans. The bridge is operated by the Vancouver International Airport.

hahahaha this thread cracks me up.

on a serious note the same thing happened on 91 offramp just off Alex Fraser East Bound...dunno what those cars are parked there for.

Who is Alex Fraser and why is he so selfless that he lets so many cars and trucks drive over him everyday?

The Alex Fraser Bridge (also known as the Annacis Bridge) is a cable-stayed bridge over the Fraser River and connects Richmond and New Westminster with North Delta in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. The bridge is named for Alex Fraser, a former B.C. Minister of Transportation who died of throat cancer.
