Beater Suggestions 2-4k
LiquidTurbo

Hi,
My friend knows NOTHING about cars, and wants to buy his first one. He doesn't have much to spend, but wants to get a reliable beater for 2-4k, and asked me to help him out.
I repeat, this guy knows NOTHING about cars, so I don't want to get something that needs repairing a lot. He needs something that will go on the highway a lot. Ideally, it will need minimal repairs, (except wear items, like oil, and brakes)
And he's going to drive it till it dies. He's the kind of guy that just wants to add gas and go. Don't care about the car one bit.
Any suggestions? I was thinking 90-93 Accord.
90-93 accord is good. Generally, older Hondas and Toyotas are good. Fairly reliable with low maintenance cost.

If he doesn't care about the car ONE BIT, then he's better off taking public transit.
No matter if it's a civic or a bmw, cars are only reliable if they're looked after.

Toyota Corolla
Toyota Celica (There's on for sale in the Buy & Sell forums for $1600)
Toyota Cressida
Honda Civic
Honda Accord
Acura Integra (DA2)
Nissan Sentra
Nissan 240sx (Saiko has one for sale within the asking price - FS Thread (http://www.revscene.net/forums/fs-1991-nissan-t569385.html?t=569385))
Mazda 323
Just throwing some ideas out there.

Mazda 323 always seemed like a good choice for this kinda car. Anyone have any experiences with it?

X2 any older Toyota or Honda and hes good to go. He needs to do maintance/have it done, if he wants it to run forever though!

EG would be great for its scalability.... If he drive around for long enough and decide to get a better car and build a track/drag car you have the basis covered with a EG.

i'd say like an older civic or a corolla would do him good.

Toyota Camry. Seriously my mom's friend, who is a new immigrant to Canada bought her 94 Camry 4 years ago for $4000. So far i think she has done like 5 oil changes and get the rotors machined. The damn thing still runs like a charm. And it has 180,000+ KM on it! (she knows absolutely nothing about cars, the only thing she knows is to put gas in it when the light on the dash turns on)

I agree with about 95% of the suggestions.
Most of them only require the minimum when it comes to maintenance. Make sure he does them if he wants to drive it to the ground.

~93 style toyota camry
ultra reliable car, cheap to maintain, cheap on gas, cheap on insurance,
I just got one two weeks ago for $1500 and it already save me $240 insurance. On top of that, I no longer need to do oil change every 5K, no need to fill up with 94, no need to worry about road salt ruining my primary car, and no need to buy a set of 17 inch 4 season or snow tires.
Oh, I also get 2 more seat, two more door, 5 times cargo space, and a roof......................
I save approx $80 a month when I drive my beater camry.

Going to be selling my 1990 740 GLE volvo soon.
Only has 140k on it! Clean ride and is reliable as hell. Built like tank and will only stop working if the engine blows up.
Engine is good too.

Thanks for all the suggestion guys.
He's probably going to get me to be in charge of it's maintenance, so I don't want something I gotta fix all the time!
I will look into all the links and cars you guys suggested.

I thought they only sold Volvos to people from the Gulf Islands...and home knitted seaters, cords and Birkenstocks were mandatory...preferred employment...Librarian or Teachers. Just "cause Jack Bauer's Dad voices the commercials, doesn't automatically make them cool. :)

civic. mine has 270K and still going strong (for a civic lol )
great gas mileage, reliable, cheap parts, simple to fix.
don't get an accord unless you need the room or your friend would think civic is unsafe.

Civic and Corolla is over priced in used market. for the price people asking, you can get accord and camry of the same year.

If you want luxury, comfort, maneuverability, and decent fuel mileage.
91-95 Infiniti G20 (P10) can be had for that price.
but civics are great.. i sold my 93 si hatch, but it had 350k and still running strong when i let her go.

The cars with the 3.8L Series 1 engines?
i.e: Buick Park Avenue, Etc.
Those are practically bulletproof.
Mileage isn't bad, and the insurance is likely cheaper.
I know, not the prettiest cars but it'll get the job done, with parts being plentiful and cost-efficient.
You're breaking my heart!
Just wait till the zombie outbreak. My tank will be cruising along with 3 dead zombies between the tires and 1 through the engine and I'll be alright.

They're not necessarily cheap, they are however, cheaply made
Go with the DA, 2nd gen integra, good gas mileage, light on maintenance, and also a good platform to use if he ever decides to CARE about cars and mod it

The thing is if your friend is going to do highway driving a lot, you mind as well go with bigger cars.. much more stable.. and much more comfortable.

2-4k is a nice car.
A beater is anything just over a thousand and left. Tell him to buy a volvo then get a bunch of suspension parts with the extra money. Then he can have mad tyte handling yo

I got my 1992 4-Door Tercel 3-4 years ago and I haven't run into any problems yet. Friend also has the same model tercel and he uses it to drive to Whistler, Kelowna, etc with no problems for him either. Cheap on gas and cheaper insurance too =] Tercels are quite cheap on the market as well.
