Italian Police Crash Lamborghini Gallardo Patrol Car
November 30th, 2009
By Nelson Ireson

Just over a year ago, we brought you the story of Lamborghini's gift of a Gallardo LP560-4 to the Italian State Police, equipped in full police regalia, for patrol duty on the highways and byways of central and southern Italy. Today, we bring you news of its demise.

The car struck a row of parked cars while being piloted through the streets of Cremona. Officially, the story is that the officer driving the Lamborghini swerved to avoid another car in the roadway that had cut it off.

Two policemen were in the car, and though the passenger got out with only bruises, the driver suffered crushed vertebra and a broken rib. Both are expected to recover fully.

The Gallardo, however, is not so lucky. Though it might be repairable, it will never be the car it once was: A GPS-logging, radar-gun-wielding, live-digital-video-broadcasting, gun-equipped terror of all things fast.

Italy's police have logged over 87,000 miles of duty with Gallardo patrol cars since 2004.

This is the first time in 87,000 miles that they've written off a Gallardo? That's pretty damn good if you really think about it.

There was a non LP Gallardo before this one, so it's more like 2 cars (at least) combined to have 87000miles... and IIRC Lambo gave it to them as a gift...

* according to wiki, there's 2 donated in 04, 1 from lambo, one from private org... and a LP was donated in 08 by Lambo

how does it make sense to actually use an exotic as a police cruiser, given the hard abuse the vehicle would encounter, the high cost of maintenance and repairs, and the low level of reliability? makes more sense to use it as a PR piece imo, kinda like the RTR Mini-S.

i bet the police gets a huge discount on maintenance when they bring the lambos in.

So the italian police have at least 3 Gallardos. And together they have logged 87k in total. That really isn't a lot on this LP560-4 then.

Something tells me the Polizia di Stato and Carabinieri are going to keep the truth covered up real good.. even better than the rcmp would.

The lambo/ferrari is a serious icon of pride for the country, having them as cop cars is a show of strength. And if you've ever driven in italy, you know that those fuckers are crazy and even though the highway limits are 135kph, speeders go wayy faster since most of the cop cars are little junkers, and the getaway car can be in the next country before the italian cops can even put down their cappucinos.
