I have never had any interest in following sports. Now, I don’t mean that I don’t like sports. I played organized sports in my youth. Occasionally I have even enjoyed going out to watch a sporting event.
But what I have never been able to understand is this fascination with the minutia of the games. Why do grown men get all worked up talking about how fast or strong some young guy is? Sounds a little funny to me, if you know what I mean.
Then there is this unjustifiable loyalty to the “home team”. In every circumstance, the players in all the major sports come from everywhere but the home town. How do you feel any loyalty to a team made up of guys from some other town or country? It doesn’t make sense. And look at the money wasted on sports. Doesn’t anybody other than me wonder why we dedicate an entire section in our newspapers to sports, a for-profit business? Why don’t we have an entire section for some other business like landscaping? I mean really, why do we give this enormous amount of free advertising to these businesses (sports teams)? It doesn’t make sense.
Here is what I see. Everybody reads the same sports reports and watches the same sports shows. Then the next day at work, they parrot back everything they read or heard, as if it is their own original opinion. Lame.
Then folks line up to get an autograph. What do you get out of that? Does it make you a better person? Does it make your life complete to grovel at the feet of some guy just to have him scribble on your ball cap? Does that somehow improve the quality of your life? Perhaps in some weird way it does. I just don’t get it.
Anybody that can name all the starting players on any team that they don’t personally play on just a little too obsessed. Just think of what they could do with all that time wasted following the antics of these young men. How much time could they give back to their family or to others that need help?
Now I don’t think all these people are somehow defective. I think they just got caught up in this behavior as youngsters, and don’t know any better. For many it is probably a good way to keep them content with otherwise stale lives. What better way to forget about the mediocrity of your own life than to tie your dreams to the local sports heroes? Just sit back and let your life tick away while you watch others live their dream. It is certainly easier than finding your own dream to chase.

i kind of agree. the only sport i follow the soccer but only euro/world cup even my own home country that identify with (china and canada?) will never make it into the cup i feel at least the players are fair representation of their country team and i like rooting for the underdog countries. having said the the main reason i watch is because i like to gamble on it and it the only sport/ competition that at least make sense to me.
i know some ppl watch professional sport because they actually play it themselves and want to learn from the best most followers don't. look at 80% of ppl following ufc mma most are skinny pricks that just dream of being badass and wear stuff like affliction. I've been "school" by so many self proclaim sport expert just because they spent their whole life and money buying and watch sport products, its kind of sad. I'll stick to my gambling

I follow sports for the same reason I like seeing idiots being tased on Cops.

People get fascinated by sports because they witness something that they physically cannot do.
-Run 100m in 9.6s
-Hit a 100mph serve
-Slapshot a puck
-KO someone
-Tackle a 300lb man running full tilt.
How could someone NOT find that amusing. Finding things that amuse you DEFINITELY improve your quality of life.

lol yeah but i think the author was trying to emphasize obsession over the sport rather than watching for amusement. and on that level i do agree with the author.
but its like.. whys he gotta bash on the fans if they just love the sport geez keep it to urself. fucking blaming people for wasting their time, who doesnt waste time? shit instead of writing that article he coulda wrote about something that makes a difference fuckin gaddaaaaaamn.

Meh. Everyone has their own obsessions. Sports, cars, clothing, shopping, fashion, gaming, politics, photography etc.
The author's arguments could be applied to any of those.

^ True dat. Watching for entertainment is one thing. Talking about individual player stats, who played with no soul last game, who high-sticked who.. who gives a crap? Same with people who follow every move of movie stars.. get a life already. 
If half the Canucks died in a plane crash I don't think I'd even blink.
I admit though, I'd watch if it was playing a bar I happened to hit up. Just don't ask me to name any of the players their positions, or their numbers. Hell, I only learned 2 years ago that it's not the same players on the ice for the full period, always wondered since I was a kid why they never seemed to tire out. Same with Bertuzzi getting traded somewhere, when did that happen? 
Canucks haven't made a dime off me (unless you count beers at the bar) and I plan on keeping it that way. If anything, they lost money as someone gave me a Canucks cap a while back.  Some other sucker can pay $1500/yr for some Ice Packs or whatever they're called to watch a bunch of guys skating around in a rink with sticks.

$3000 for a season is just outrageous. Think of how much money can go into your retirement if u invest that $3000 every year.

Alll kidding aside, I love watching hockey. The plays, the great saves, etc. It makes me forget about my shitty day. Then again, when the Canucks lose I get pretty depressed.........
I don't play in sports as much as I used to in my younger days, but it's great to see the best at something do their thing. It's like listening/watching great musical performances. Amazing what humans can accomplish. Even better when they perform together - team work.

I grew up playing every sport I could learn. It taught leadership, discipline, how to make and reach goals etc etc.
Growing up playing sports, you naturally start to watch the sports you like to play and find the top level of the sport entertaining, often hoping you could emulate the top athletes. Forwarding to now, I like to watch sports because it helps you escape as someone else mentioned, "the turmoil in society". As to why do so many people "waste" money on sports? Its pretty much picking your poison. I don't buy music cd's, I burn them, I don't buy DVD's I pirate them, but when it comes to sports, I will happily spend money on tickets, and even memorabilia. This is my entertainment.

Used to love following sports, but last few years I've shared same thoughts as in that blog. All I watch now is euro and world cup soccer cause that's like cheering for your nation almost at war lol.
I think the reason these players are so over paid is subconciously turning me off sports. Except MMA. watching someone get KTFO still holds it's entertainment value for me Posted via RS Mobile | |

I used to follow hockey religously... I only somewhat follow now just to get the great wing and beer deals at bars!!! I keep asking when was the last time the Canucks won the stanley cup, or let alone a Canadian team. It's been awhile to say the least... following sports can only be explained by home town spirit  | |

I don't watch a lot of sports but I have a couple of reasons of why we watch:
1. Watching skilled players is like watching an artform...to me anyways.
2. Drama. Nothing like staging an event with a big storyline and needing to see it unfold. ie..Shamrock/Ortiz
The OP has a few good points though.
