China grants Canada approved destination status
Could mean a huge boost to tourism
Dean Recksiedler VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) | Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 9:13 am

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's a move that could save BC's tourism industry - China has given Canada approved destination status.

The move makes it easier for Chinese tourists to come to Vancouver and spend their money here. How much? It could be as much as $100 million a year in new tourism spending.
Brad Davies with Virtually There Travel says it's fantastic news, "Post-Olympics there was a bit of a question mark how inbound travel was going to be handled into BC and Canada. This is just a long overdue shot in the arm for tourism."

Canadian tourism associations had been pushing Ottawa to make nice with China to get approved destination status but our past criticisms of the country's human rights record had been the sticking point.

Dude, keep in mind most of the mainlanders that will be able to travel to Canada or BC are those of the wealthier by far group. And I mean really wealthy. When you compare
$6.48 rmb to $1cdn and even teachers in mainland china only make $100cdn a month how long do you think it will take them to save enough for the airfare alone? Let alone, the expenses to be a "tourist" in Vancouver. Its not even for the middle class. Its only the upper class who will probably be able to afford to come here.

also another example:

$1 RMB buys you a can of coke in China
$1 CDN barely buys you a can of coke in Canada

Everything they spend will be 6 times the amount they pay at home, so most of the middle/lower class won't be able to afford much to travel here.

they're loud and obnoxious and aren't afraid to show it. this is the way things work in mainland china, cheat or be cheated. they also like to project superiority by being cocky and rude. works in china, not so much here in canada. have you ever heard of calling the cops because a canadian was so offended by asking for ID with a credit card before? don't think so.

all the talk about only rich ones will come here, is crap.

so many people come on tourists visa and declare refugee status. draining gov/our funds. if a business man from china wants to come to canada. he gets business visa..
all this is for tourist visa.

rather than coming on the boat, they will be coming via air china now...

Yup. I don't think anyone realizes just how hard it is to get a China Visa to get in. Let alone getting OUT of China.
You pretty much have to have enough money to own pretty expensive property, have a family, and have the cash to buy a plane ticket.
Then there's the spending they will do when they get here.

The mainlanders that are in HK etc are not a reflection of the ones with manners. Not all of them are rude.

I got a huge shock when I got the weekend off while in Shanghai and decided to do some shopping, people will be on the phone while crossing the street and bump right into you and start cursing you stuff like " &@*^$(&^# do you even have a pair of eyes" etc.

I'm asian but this sort of behavior is really unacceptable. I've seen mainlanders write a cheque in full for a 750, M3 etc so yeah, I know they are rich, but that does not give them the right to be rude and disrespectful while visiting our country.

While I understand that no culture is perfect and that we have different attitudes towards different things, it's amazing how many things mainlanders get wrong. I laugh at the people who voted for Harper and the conservatives thinking they would actually stem the flow of immigration instead they got a PM who's giving out visas like there's no tomorrow. And China isn't the only country he's promised more visas or relaxed rules for visa applicants, he also promised more visas during his trip to Punjab so it's obvious that he's trying to get support within the Chinese’s and Punjabi communities for the next election.

Totally depends on where they're from. Just like how over here we have rednecks vs urban folks. Over there it's the same thing. The unedumacated ones from the small towns are the ones that stick out. You don't notice the FOBs here that are attending med or law school; they are more the homey type.

I was recently in Beijing and EVERYONE was quite nice, even in most of the dingy areas. I was quite shocked actually after hearing all the stories from back home. Meanwhile, in Xian, taxis would swear at you and lock their doors if you tried to board them before they reached their terminals. GZ people are definitely rough around the edges; the city's a huge 'hood.

With that said, the only industries that benefit directly from all this added tourism in the short term is the service industry. If you work in a restaurant or hotel, more tips for you. :D Next would be the car/real estate industries. For those who work professional jobs, the impact will be pretty much negligible unless these immigrants actually start BUSINESSES here instead of just buying stuff to use.

With increased tourism WILL come increased immigration though. What the cities need to do is increase the living density all around the downtown areas so curb urban sprawl and keep property prices down.

Every culture has its stereotypes, and yes, the stereotypes exist for a reason. I've served a lot of Chinese people (worked @ a Karaoke place) and some of the Mainlanders I've met are really nice and well-mannered. However, from experience, the majority are like the stereotypes (cheap, loud, rude, arrogant, and etc.).

This is why Vancouver can never be a great international city. It's the mindset of you idiots that ruin the image of the city. Have some of you guys even been to another country before? I highly doubt it. Go to HK, Seoul, China, Singapore, Malaysia and look at what they do to attract tourists and look what Vancouver does, shit all except for Whistler.

Whenever I visit other countries, I make sure I do my best to fit in. I attempt to communicate in the local language, eat at places frequented by locals, and I don't do anything to draw attention to myself. Therefore, I'm entitled to my "holier-than-thou" attitude about visitors who do not do the same when they come to Canada.

They are talking about letting more TOURISTS into Canada, not relaxing immigration. How many of you teenidiots work in retail? Work in service industry? You are saying you don't want more customers to keep your jobs? Are you saying you don't want more money in our economy? You don't want to make Vancouver a more international city so maybe we can have more investors in here? You are are truly single minded dumbfucks.

To some, Vancouver is heaven on earth and therefore we don't need any more people with whom to share this place. To heck with the economy - I want my view of the mountains, my access to the beach, and a place to park my car for free.

Sure, I'm being tongue-in-cheek, but these sentiments are just underneath the surface. Check out Craigslist, the West Ender, or the Georgia Straight.

Also you want more clean? At least in HK and SZ they have trash cans everywhere to put your garbage in and if you put your cigarette on the floor, you will get fined if caught. Vancouver? I see everyone just throwing their butts on the floor. Great example there.

Shenzhen may have a subway system and garbage cans, but it's still a classless city. I like Hong Kong though (perhaps because the British civilized the place before they left.)

I reckon that most of the rich Mainlainders got rich through their stakes in government-owned businesses. Money never buys class.

Half of you guys are fucking retards and it clearly shows who is still in high school and who is not.

You think the mainlanders are rude and have no manners? It sure sounds like half of you guys here are more arrogant and rude. Go out and see the world, you think westerners are model citizens? Give me a break. I am in HK right now and I saw some Canadian guy bitch and cry because the police asked to see his HKID or passport. The little baby was saying "you don't have the right" and all that bullshit, but guess what, they DO have the right. Understanding each other's cultures go both ways, but the way you guys talk, it is starting to make spitting on the street better than your attitudes (by the way, I don't know how many countless times I have seen skater boys and punks spit in front of malls, at bus stops, dt etc). Also you want more clean? At least in HK and SZ they have trash cans everywhere to put your garbage in and if you put your cigarette on the floor, you will get fined if caught. Vancouver? Well whatever I say, you idiots will just continue to bash or what not. I am sure you guys are setting a fine example of high etiquette standards and being polite.

RFlush...
I wouldnt compare Revscene clowns with the rest of community.
The majority will welcome tourism from China.
This will benefit Canada in many ways.
The negativity are usually from the ignorant and uneducated.
Dont take it personally... it only feeds the mindless trolls.

every culture has their bad apples and thats true, but if we talking about percentage, the chinese still has the most bad ones by numbers, out of all other cultures, thats why they're seen all the time?

but yea, bring in the money, but not the immigrants

i laugh at the logic here bring in the money but not the immigrants.. lol

if they like Canada, they will apply for immigration... With the money they brought in Canada... canadian governemnt are never going to refuse them :D It never hurts for Chinese to have Canadian citizenship rather than holding a China passport

thats how it works ... money talks

perhaps you guys should talk about how to raise the bar for immigrantion law first rather than money grabing system that Canada have right now.

well, u all gotta understand the geography and history of China first before stereotyping. China is big & ppl from different areas are different due to their own sub-culture.
