Where did you pick up your Kurt Kinetic bcrdukes? I've read it's the best bike trainer on the market, but they're pricey.

I got mine from La Bicicletta on W. Broadway. They had the cheapest price in town for $365 or something. Most places sell for $399 etc. They aren't cheap - I agree but it really helped me when I first got back onto the bike after a 15 year hiatus. :D

Online prices are the same even in the US - just an FYI.

I'm sorry, your right until you have a bit of experience on a bike, then you notice right away. Bikes with good components last. Crisp shifts for more then a month, adjustability. Keep riding and you will figure it out quickly.

Hey guys I'm planning to buy a fixie for my girlfriend. We were looking at the Macargi RD269 and she's ridden the 53cm and it felt slightly large for her height at 5'3". One size down is the 48cm but we couldn't try that one out. We were contacting this guy from Craigslist who has been ordering them in and selling them for $320 firm which I think is a pretty fair price based on eBay pricing.

I couldn't find this bike to be sold elsewhere locally. Now however I think we'll be buying it off eBay though because the seller hasn't returned any calls after that one time we met and tried out the bike.

Now my questions are, would 48cm be too small for her height at 5'3"?

When she rode the 53cm with the seat set the lowest, she was tip toeing on one foot while the other in the air, is this normal for a fixie?

Anywhere else I can look at to buy a fixie for under $350 brand new locally?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Tried searching but it was all motorbikes, didn't wanna make a new thread either. Hope you guys could help us out!

LOL! No! 53cm is too tall for her! You should be able to stand between the bike without it touching your crotch and with the bike standing straight up. If not, it's too big.

If I recall correctly from our meet last Friday, a 48 or 50cm should work for her. How tall is she anyway? Fixies could be bad for your knees so maybe consider something else on the safe side. Also check out BikesDirect.com (http://www.bikesdirect.com) for their fixies. (not local.) It's going to be pretty hard to find a fixie for $350 locally.

I asked her to stand over the top tube and she was aaaaalmost flat on both feet. She's exactly 5'3". I wish there was a 50cm but they only came in 48 and 53 =/ We like how it rides and how light it is etc so I think we'll stick with fixies lol. Thanks bcrdukes!

If she's 5'3, she'll have to compromise with a 48. 53 is way too tall for her. She should be at the very least be able to flat foot it while standing between the top tube.

Regarding the gf's bike, 53 is likely to be WAYYY too big. I'm 5'9" and I ride a 52.

Im stuck between a 54 and a 51 (only because they come in those 2 sizes), Im about 5'9-10. When I sit on the 54, i can just clear the top tube flat footed with barely a finger in between. But 51 seems a lil small for me. Is it worse for a bike to too big or small for the rider?

dat_steve
06-04-2012, 03:27 PM
they're both bad :P if I absolutely had to pick i'd go for the 54..i'm 5'7 with a 30in inseam and the bikes i ride are 51-52. stand over height is one way of measuring size but reach is also very important. you don't want to drop a paycheque on something that you're going to regret though - i say find something that's your size :)

i'm always scrounging CL and PB so if you drop us your measurements/budget im sure we can help find you something :)

woob
06-04-2012, 05:08 PM
I think it depends on your body type and the bike's geometry. I would say throw the potential frames on a trainer and adjust saddle height accordingly to determine the best potential fit. At least, that's how Cap's determined the size for me is 52. For reference I am 5'9" with a 33" inseam (not my pants inseam).

I'm thinking of doing a road bike frame up build from a Rocky Mountain alu/carbon frame, nothing too fancy just middle of the range type stuff. I'm not very well versed in the road scene, but I'm quite familiar to the mountain bike side of things. I've converted my mtb into a pseudo hybrid but it doesn't get me stoked to get out and fire off 50k on the road.

A couple of starter questions for you guys:
1. Standard or compact cranksets? I don't think Vancouver in general is considered too hilly or mountainous to require compact, I may be wrong though
2. Do the make of brakes make huge a difference? I see Tektro spec'd on a lot of the low-mid range bikes, and I know that Tiagra/105 is the general quality entry level range.
3. Where is best to look for used/preowned components? I browse Pinkbike and CL quite regularly.

pretty sure i'm nowhere near as crazy as these other dudes but pre-ride i'll have an egg or two with some yogurt and toast...pretty much whatever i can scrounge up in the morning. i'll eat a snack bar every 50km or so. some of my buddies are into the gels and such, i just haven't tried them out myself but they seem like a good way to keep energy levels up.

if i feel like i'm seriously going to hit a wall i'd just pull over and enjoy the scenery for 5 minutes or so. i just pretend like i'm adjusting my seat or something if other guys are passing by :P

Depends, usually after an hour i need something, for me i keep a fig newton in my back jersey, and if you splash something with carbohydrates either every once in a while, you get a pretty good jump in performance.

Also anyone whos getting a tad addicted on the topic of cycling,

1. I ride a compact: 50/34 with a 12/27 rear cassette. You probably will hardly use 53-12 anyway unless you're planning on pulling a 35+mph sprint in the near future. Also, downhill speed can be achieved with a good tuck instead of pedalling on your biggest rings. I hardly use even the 50-12 on my compact. I have, however, used the 34-27 for steep hills in Vancouver (18% grade for 140m near my house) and elsewhere. But really, it's up to you. If you foresee yourself not ever needing the small ring, then by all means get a standard double.

Here's a nice little webpage that calculates achievable speeds at certain cadences and gear ratios (http://www.machars.net/bikecalc.htm).

2. Tektro has served me well so far. I hear the pads make a big difference, though, so I plan to upgrade to Kool Stop pads once the Tektro once wear siginificatly.

3. PB and CL are the big ones. MEC Online Gear Swap may also be worth a look.

Question for woob / LiquidTurbo / pK-diU- and all you roadies who go on 234141km rides.

When you go on 1hr+ rides, what do you pack in forms of food or fuel to keep you going? And when do you start to feel like you're hitting the wall?

For 25-30km rides: 1 bottle of water

For ~50km rides: 1 bottle of water and a few Clif Shot Blocks (essentially candy that's easy to grab out of a jersey pocket)

For >70km: 2 bottles of water, a bunch of Shot Blocks, and around one cup of salted roasted almonds (I never eat all of them, though). The protein from the almonds is nice to have because BCAAs increase resistance to fatigue in glycogen-depleted subjects (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21297567). Specifically, leucine (one such BCAA) is found in moderate quantities in almonds.

The thing to remember for long rides is to stay hydrated and keep topping yourself up with energy. This means drinking before you feel thirsty and eating before you feel hungry. Otherwise, you'll bonk. I don't usually "hit the wall" if I eat and drink enough before and during the ride.

I haven't hit a serious wall since around a month ago at a 50km R2CC training ride that I hadn't prepared for (see: hadn't ridden in a month). On that ride, once past the 30km mark, whenever the road went uphill I just said "fuck it" and spun my lowest gear all the way up. That's usually my plan if I bonk. Also, if you're riding with a group, just sit in their slipstream until you've recovered. Try to hold their wheel as long as possible, because once you've been dropped, you're done. Drafting makes a huge difference.

~30:
1. A loop around the Fraser River between the Cambie Street Skytrain bridge and Queensborough using Kent Ave in Van and River Road in Richmond. It's pretty flat other than some spots on Marine and Southpoint Dr in Burnaby. ~32km

2. A loop up the Ontario hill, east along the Ridgway bike route, pick a hill to go south back to the river, and close the loop along the Kent bike route. The only big hill is Ontario Street. <30km

~40:
3. Out-and-back to UBC along Kent/Heather/57th/Marine. >40km

4. Out-and-back to Iona Beach <40km. I'll often throw in the end of my Queensborough loop to get 50+km with some small hills.

Once I did a ride out to UBC and back without eating a single thing.. probably not the smartest idea.

These days, at minimum I'll bring two water bottles 4-5 Cliff Bars, use a hammer gel or two. On the recent spout of hot weather I stopped in a Chevron and got a 2 of those gatorade things for 3$. They fit in bike bottle racks too!

The last ride I did over 100km I felt like I could've kept going... ran out of time in a day. My next big ride will be out to Squamish and back (200km roundtrip). (Anyone want to join me? lol) Will do a trip report including what to eat.

The night before rides I'll eat a huge dinner.

I think for distance, the best thing to do is make one the most efficient possible on a bike. Ride with road cleats and everything properly adjusted. I think the culmination of the small things make all the difference. After all, you are the engine and the bike is just the vehicle. Keeping tires topped up to perfect PSI has a lot to do with it as is dealing with wind resistance. Riding with a tailwind is really helpful. I think also speed is a great factor. Just like how someone could walk all day, compared to running all day, you have to find a happy medium of gearing and cadence. A lot of people are using too low of a gear for max efficiency.

Thanks for the info. I ended up ordering my parts from CRC in the UK. Got Raceface Cadence 53/39 crankset/bb, SRAM 1050 11-28 cassette, 10 spd chain, 105 rr der, R501 wheelset, and 3 Vittoria tires for ~$330 with free shipping. Not sure what I'm doing with brakes, but I'll probably look for a good used set of 105 or Ultegra in the classifieds or Ebay. Goal is to keep the complete build under $750. That way if road riding doesn't work out for me I should be able to sell the bike at a minimal loss. With any luck the bike will come out around 20-21lbs. If I love the sport, then I'll invest in a nicer set of wheels at a later time to ditch some rotating weight.

UFO - Could you let me know how your experience with CRC was? I've been hesitant to order with them simply because they are in the UK. I'm assuming the parts are being shipped straight to your home, correct?

I won't lie. I've been lazy these days. I don't enjoy going to Blaine/Point Roberts to pick stuff up anymore. I'd much rather pay the $15 extra for shipping to my house and deal with taxes/duties.

eddy89 - Any particular reason why an XC bike? I ask because I was thinking of one (way before I bought a bike) but my co-worker brought up a good point. Why pay road bike prices for something between a hybrid/mountain bike and a road bike? You could easily get a dedicated hybrid or mountain bike and a road bike used on Craigslist for the same amount of money.

UFO
06-07-2012, 01:06 PM
For sure. CRC gets tons of glowing reviews from the MTB side for their quick service and shipping considering they are halfway around the world, and ridiculous pricing too sometimes cheaper than local shops' wholesale pricing. They ship free to Canada above ~$150cdn I think, and feedback has been that usually packages come tax free. A couple of the things I ordered are on back order til mid-June so my order will not ship until everything is together, which I knew about before hand so its all good.

I have an XC hardtail bike which is a pretty boutique make. I like the bike, but find its uses fairly limited around here. Its on 26" slicks now, with a 36-48 chainring upfront, and works pretty well for commuting and easy trails. It has no provisions for disc brakes, old school geometry with limited front suspension, so it doesn't see much offroad use especially around here locally.

Hard to compare value of a new bike bought in store vs. a used bike. I have had many bikes over the years but only my first MTB in 1996 was bought in store. Since then everything has been a combination of buying used and/or frame up builds. But the sourcing/speccing/building is a big hobby of mine, the riding part is merely a means to satisfy that hobby.

The Look pedals are clip ins, and will require compatible shoes, not sure if you consider that 'crazy'. Clipless pedals make a huge difference to efficiency though. If you are just starting out, recommend practicing getting in and out in a park on soft grass. The motion to get out of the pedals requires a bit of practice to train your body since your natural reaction is to lift the foot off, which the pedals will not let you do. Definitely do not recommend starting off on the streets right away, you don't want to cause a crash by not being able to get out of your pedals like these ones:

Sweet that they let u stack :p
I have Keos at my store in metro, but no stacking team assist w/ promo gc at metro unfortunately.
U don't need "special" shoes per say, just 3 hole mount road cleats.
Basic Giro ones go for $159.99 ish (decent quality too).

But yes, huge difference on efficiency, and practice on soft grass.
Imo ventura race needs to be ridden with clipless pedals

You could, potentially. May not be the most comfortable thing in the world, though. You won't have much grip and your feet will shuffle around a lot on the platform. If you don't mind a disposable $30, I think you should just get some cheap flats to ride around on for the first few months. At least they will grip your sneakers.

SPD-SL: wider platform, more even distribution of weight across the ball of the foot, more "locked in" supposedly, this is what all the pros use

SPD: slightly easier to clip in/out

that is a huge budget homie lol look to spend about $2000 on the bike, $500 on gear (shoes, pedals, jerseys, shorts, etc)

any shop will be good but if you have a brand preference *ahem cannondale* then you can pick a location depending on the dealer. i bought my bike at BSP in downtown, they have great prices on bikes from previous seasons. they sell cannondales and treks primarily so those are two great choices. in the end, you should test ride whatever fits the budget and make your choice then.

Fenders 24/7 on my bike. I ride in the rain enough to keep them on. Granted, my fenders are pretty low-profile and don't look like dental headgear.

Also, I just learned you're allowed to swap your RTCC jersey at camp. So you could potentially have a clean one for the second day haha. Just say that you "got the wrong size."

well, I think for longer distances (like going up to Squamish), I would think it's a good idea to ride with one other person, just in case something happens! If you slide out, get clipped by a car mirror (God forbid!), get more than one flat and you're only carrying 1 extra tube, etc, etc...

That is a good idea if you just want to jump on your bike and ride, without having to wear your 'riding' shoes all the time. I use those on my hybrid for that reason, sometimes you just want to ride to the store without having to change shoes.
As for SPD or SPD-SL, I use SPD, even on my road bikes, because that's what I have on my mountain bikes, and I like the idea of having one or two pairs of shoes that can 'do it all'.

Are your buddies part of the Horny Goats cycling club? I see Horny Goats jerseys every time I've been up the Spanish Banks/UBC hill. It's not that big. Cambie from Marine to 41st is much much longer, but far less steep.

I do 1/2/3/4 intervals on the Iona stretch or on River Road between No. 6 Road and Westminster Hwy or in the Glenlyon business park in Burnaby. I don't do hill repeats, but if I did, I would do them on the hills that go up from Marine Dr: Elliot, Kerr, Patterson, Gilley, etc.

UFO - Could you let me know how your experience with CRC was? I've been hesitant to order with them simply because they are in the UK. I'm assuming the parts are being shipped straight to your home, correct?

My CRC order came in yesterday, just over a week after ordering. Everything went fine and smooth. I got hit with $23 in HST so far plus 8.50 brokerage with Canada Post, not surprised but I seem to be in the minority with CRC orders and having to pay tax. Had I shipped to Pt. Roberts I probably would have been able to bring the stuff back tax free

My wheels were out of stock when I placed the order which I knew already but the ETA got pushed back another week to early July, so I may cancel those and look around locally. They were supposed to ship everything altogether so I only get dinged with brokerage once but at least this way I can start putting everything together I suppose.

what route did you take to get down to steveston? Are there any backroads which are quiet or did you have to go down the main roads?

Well, for starters, I went from Iona Beach towards Miller Road. From Miller, took a right down No. 2 Road. After the bridge, I cut through to a small path towards Lynas Lane. From there, south on Lynas Lane to Granville. Right on Granville which turns into Railway then all the way down to Moncton Ave.

The route I took has dedicated bike lanes. I once tried taking back roads but they are bad to ride on or have too many stops. The main streets with bike lanes are fine in my experience.

proportions are great, upper body is 100% fine post ride but things that bothered me were:

bars: i'm a fan of the classic bend with a compact-ish drop, the stock bars have a weird "egro" angle to them that my wrists didn't like too much
pedals: looking at something with a wider platform, maybe the 105's
stem: current thing is a clunker and more importantly it's ugly :fullofwin:

SO. How come cyclists in Vancouver bike on the street as opposed to the sidewalk?
The safety of the pedestrians is not endagered( unless its a hipster biker). Or if they are going to share the road, they should abide by the same rules as cars, either that or all bikes should be mandatory fit with Avid code's

In dry condition, with clean rims and good pads a decent v brake actually has better stopping power than mechanical disc brake, since both left and right pad contact the rim at the same time(if tuned properly).
For a mechanical disc brake, the moving pad needs to "bend" the rotor into the non moving pad resulting in energy loss. And on a lower end mechanical disc brake+ lock end fork combo, the disc tab usually are not welded perfectly stright, resulting in the pad hitting the rotor at an angle, and again resulting in loss of power and efficiency.
My "street" bike is still running Avid SD Ultimate Vees on the rear with a hydraulic disc on the front for the modulation.

Europe, All of Europe to be more exact.

I'm just amazed how a person without a helmet can bike on the street with cars when there is a big chance of you getting hit by your mistake or a drivers mistake. Its much safer on the sidewalk, sure if there are too many pedestrians and you are overwhelemed, then you should hop of and roll on the street.
I guess my main problem is seeing EMPTY sidewalks and bikers killing traffic by going on the street, ( most of the time with no helmet)

First off, avid ultimates are roughly 10 times better than your average v brake set.

I have been biking for 10 years, my main Specs are Downhill and Trials riding, i had avid ultimates like you and i changed them for Avid Code's, they have literrally saved my life on 2 different ocasions while biking through europe, where its a bit crowded. I do agree that most disc brakes are in general gardbage and not as responsive as a ultimate v brake but then again, the ultimates cost 200$ per set, so thats almost as much as a set of Avid Codes which are brilliant and have massive stopping power.
The main reason why i like disc's is that in boh trials and DH, bent rims are as casual as inflating my tires. With v brakes i would be stranded in most cases. And if it rains discs have the upper hand.

Ultimately its all about the rider, brakes are important but more so for newer riders who dont have developed reflexes. I've seen this shit first hand when a woman bikin on a city bike with obviously shit brakes went face first into the door of a civic, some will argue that its the Civic's fault but from my point of view its 100% the riders fault for having shitty reflexes ( BTW the Honda door fell of its hinge :)))

Then later on riding on the Canada Line bike/pedestrian bridge, near the bottom of the Richmond side theres like 2 steep turns, had a little bit too much fun and locked up the front. Hydraulic disks + Semi slick street tire = :okay:

I was leaning towards a hybrid pedal but usually when you want the best of both worlds you end up getting the worst of both worlds.

After doing some researching for bikes I think I'm pretty set on the Giant Defy 1. Has anyone seen this bike for less than $1299? I've been calling around different stores and that seems to be the lowest price in town.

Shimano A530 is probably the best hybrid clipless pedal available. You can probably swap the stock pedals and get a good deal on the 530's when you buy your bike. You've probably called Different Bikes, but I recommend them for good pricing and service and they'll take care of the pedal swap no problems and set you up.

Most mechanical disc brakes are not very good, and in some cases a good v-brake will out perform them (but only in the dry and only if the wheel is true), noticed I said a good v-brake. Not all v-brakes are SD-Ultimates, just like not all mech disc brakes are Avid BB7's which are on par with many hydraulic systems and head and shoulders above the SD-Ultimates any day of the week performance wise.

Van M5: for somebody who has been riding for as long as you say, you seem clueless about cycling on the road. Commuters riding on sidewalks not dangerous? C'mon. Asking cyclists to hop on and off the sidewalk and roads? Give me a break. There's enough good cycling designed routes and streets in the city that cyclists don't need to clog up nor risk their own safety in high traffic arterial routes. Letting cyclists ride on the sidewalk beause they have no helmets -- you realize its against the law to ride with no helmet right? Suggesting commuters use Avid Code's for street riding...yeah really have nothing to say to that. Hope those riders have helmets when they accidentally launch themselves over the handlebars stopping from 20km/h. If you ever ride on the street, I have a pretty good idea the type of rider you would look like...

Thanks for the help. I was debating between buying from Different Bikes or Cap's Westwood Cycle but opted for DB because they offer lifetime basic tune ups and discounts if you buy a bike through them. It's also closer to me and they were willing to answer emails unlike Cap's. The bike was a bit more expensive but they price matched it with no issues.

I ended up getting the '12 Giant Defy 1 with PD-A530 pedals. It was my first time on a road bike and man this thing is fast compared to mountain bikes. Too bad it rained today because I was really looking forward to ride it at around 5pm.

I've bought a bike from Caps Westwood before with no issues but I know exactly what I need and want and I'm in and out usually. But there have been many instances of Caps WW employing inexperienced kids as pushy salepeople, and also some stories of douchey post-sale customer service treatment. Different Bikes on the other hand has a very solid reputation for service and pricing, so you made the right choice for sure.

I am in the exact same boat as you. After looking around for a bit, I decided to do my own frame up build because I found a great deal on my frame. I ordered the rest of my parts online. I'll be well under $1000 for a aluminum/carbon frame carbon fork with all parts brand new 105 level or higher.

Picked up the Ventura Race! Kind of disappointed it didn't come with any cheap-o pedals. I just picked up a set of the Shimano 105's for the time being and rode with my runners for the day. I would have liked to have done a little research on pedals first. Oh well.

Did a quick little 20km loop on my first ride. Feels good! Man, these things are so much more agile then my old MTB bikes. Took me a little less then an hour, riding in the City (Toronto) kind of sucks lol. I'm sure i'll find some good spots soon. So far I really enjoyed it!

Got another bike to build! Giant TCR C1 Carbon. Bought it just as a frame set, just threw on the Mavic wheelset, Race Face Cadence seat post and handlebar, and a random Selle Italia saddle for the photo. Now, got to source a groupset! Thinking of going with SRAM this time.

:/ . I'm not in the city right now and won't be back for a while, so I can't take advantage of it.

Any thoughts on what pedals to use for a commuter bike (20-25km max distance)? I'm thinking about buying another bicycle as my main transportation around Van. Flats aren't comfortable and my feet shift around a lot when I use them but road shoes are stupid to walk around in and I'm kinda wary of toe clips so I'm at a loss as to what my best option is.

Is there a particular bike you have in mind? I ask because I need to clear out my stable. I've got a Kona Hahanna for sale (was going to sell to RESN but rear deraileur decided to crap out but got it repaired after he bought his own bike) and thinking of selling my Scott SUB 30 hybrid.

I've got a set of Shimano SPD pedals and they seem ok for 20-25km'ish.

woob
06-30-2012, 05:57 PM
I'm not really looking for a specific brand/model, but I do know I want another road bike and not a hybrid since I don't really have any comfort issues riding in a more aggressive road position and I like the extra hand positions that drops provide.

My Cannondale is just such a heatscore so I don't want to ride around and leave it locked up on the street.

As for pedals, my main gripe with SPD pedals are the fugly shoes that you have to wear with them. If I can find a decent looking shoe, i.e. one that wouldn't look out of place when you aren't wearing lycra, then that may work. Otherwise, I may just look for the grippiest, lowest-profile flats I can find.

I like Kona. Biased though because I have two but all in all, good, quality bikes with excellent attention to detail (their paint is awesome.) They're more well known for their mountain bikes which hold their resale. Their road bikes - not so much (not sure why.)

If you're interested in a similar setup for cheap(er), Kinetik Cycles in Burquitlam has a 2011 Scott Speedster S40 for $899, no tax. They also have a 2011 Scott Speedster S30 (105/Tiagra mix) for $1099, no tax.

Looking to throw a brake on it soon as I'm trying to source out a lever I like. Pretty light for a steel frame and I love the way it rides.

Yes, get rid of reflectors asap! As for tube, you may or may not want to cut it. If you plan to upgrade or sell the tube in the future, it would be nice to have the extra length, will suit more buyers. How many spacers do you have? Personally, I don't think it looks too bad with 'some' spacers.

Rode my bike to work last week along the BC Parkway pedestrian/bike urban trail and the path was super bumpy east of Metrotown especially during the Royal Oak stretch. It felt like I was going off-roading at times.

Nonetheless it was an awesome ride. I go to work early enough (I leave my house at 6am) that I can probably use Imperial instead of the bike route on the way there since there isn't much traffic at that time.

Do any of you guys regularly ride with cameras rolling on your helmet or bike?

That use to my route to work too, and at that same early hour! Yes, that part of the route is a bit bumpy, but not too bad. They are injecting a million bucks into the BC Parkway trail, but who knows where that money is going towards. (This was told to me by HUB Vancouver). Imperial's not bad, watch out for cars. Or, you can cut south and use Rumble (after Gilley) if your work is that direction.

If you look at the stats from the Cyclemeter app, I took almost a total of 2.5 hours of break time. Those were resting the legs, eating and smoke breaks lol.

Prelude_2_NV,

Could you post your route/which streets you took? I'd like to take on that challenge and see how poorly I fare. :p

Mike I'm sure you'll fare better than me as I'm really out of shape.

I drove my car and parked it by Byrne Creek High School and that's where I started. I headed east along 12th Ave then headed up 4th St to hit 13th Ave. Made a left at Cariboo Rd to start heading north and bombed down the hill then made another left at Government St. Went along Winston St to Bainbridge up the hill. Made a left to Lougheed then went along the Central Valley Greenway starting at Gilmore.

I then made my way towards Granville Island along Charleston Rd by the Olympic Village. Made a right at Burrard to go along West 1st Ave and continued onto Point Grey Rd. Then cut across to hit up West 4th Ave by Jericho Park and continued onto Jericho Beach via NW Marine Dr. Struggled up the hill towards UBC to continue along NW Marine Dr then made a left at West 41st Ave. I kept going east till I hit the Ridgeway Bikeway to head south then made my way along East 45th Ave (still the Ridgeway Bikeway).

Finally hit Boundary Rd where I rode along the BC Parkway Urban Trail. I then went along Imperial till I hit Macphearson and realized I was almost at my car. From there I used Beresford till I hit Griffiths then I saw my car. I was thankful to see my car because my legs were just done!

My next personal goal is to hit 100km on a single ride. I think I'll hit up Richmond as this route had many hills and just made my legs jelly.

Commuted to work again the last 2 days via bike. Some of these cyclists are fearless... they'll dart through traffic circles at full speed. I always brake coming into these, take a look and then go. This was a stretch on Windsor from 37th heading north towards 10th.

Edit: Also, what cycling apps that are free do you guys recommend? I just upgraded to an Android from my Blackberry 2 days ago and have been using the "Strava Cycling" app to track my distance.

I've been sticking to these bikeways: http://vancouver.ca/engsvcs/transport/cycling/bikeways/documents/2011BikeMap.pdf

There's not a large amount of vehicle traffic on these bikeways and seeing other cyclists on the road makes it a bit more reassuring as well. I would be extra careful during rush hour though because when the main roads get congested, motorists tend to speed through the small streets looking for shortcuts.

The only stretch I've felt a bit nervous on so far was on 45th between Central Park and Rupert since it's one of the busiest bikeway streets I've been on.

Burnaby has a map as well: http://www.burnaby.ca/Assets/multiple+locations/Bike+Map.pdf I've only been on the BC Parkway route so far so I can't really comment about the others.

I just wouldn't trust the routes off Google Maps since they'll include gravel and other unpaved roads as well.
