regardless of exams, need my daily fix of rs!
has anybody else noticed that the internet is so much more interesting when you're procastinating? i find that theres soooo many cool videos on youtube, all the different forums on RS are just so informative, you suddenly seem to wanna creep thru every single person on your facebook and just about every link will take you to another link filled with content to keep you " busy ", while you keep on telling yourself " ill study after reading / watching this "
but when you have nothing to do, no midterms no homework no need to study, the internet is fckin dull as shit

If you need to cram now, don't bother, just take the C/D and move on in life.
The real world doesn't work this way. Employers will expect you to steadily get work done, not procrastinate till a deadline then a mad rush to get it done.
Do yourself a favour and learn this skill now. If you think employers only look at grades you are mistaken. More and more interviews include many questions on how you work, and last minute people are quickly filtered out.

Everyone is different, yet I stick by this rule: if you know the material well enough to teach others, you'll do just fine.
I liked to study ahead of time, then help my friends study. It was a good judge to see if I could teach them the material, then I knew it well enough.
Also use the 80/20 rule. Its far better to spend time studying 80% of the material you know well, than time trying to learn the last 20% which might be too difficult or beyond your comprehension (everyone does have limits).

Bad move.
A good night's sleep is the best thing you can do before an exam. You'll be relaxed and not stressed going in.
Did you know the best exam scores are on morning exams? Why? Cause your mind is most awake after a good sleep.
Did you know the worst exam scores are on afternoon exams? Why? Cause by the afternoon most of us get tired/distracted. Its best to take a nap before afternoon and evening exams.
Look it up if you don't believe me. I spent a lot of time in university researching how to get the best marks without spending stupid amounts of time studying. Studying interfered with keg parties.
i don't really study. I just wait for my friends to ask me questions and I teach them. Easy way to judge my comprehension of the material

another use of the 80/20 rule here would be that 20% of your studying time results in 80% of your knowledge. the other 80% you're probably just chatting on msn, learning unnecessary stuff that isnt going to be tested or relevant, so tired that you're not absorbing the info, etc...

No.
If you're tired, take a nap then study.
You shouldn't be tired studying last minute if you've studied all term.
If you're easily distracted while studying, find somewhere less distracting.
Learning to not be distracted is a skill so many lack today.
This is probably one of the biggest tips most students need: get away from the computer
- More and more classes/materials are being offered online, which encourages students to sit on the computer with easy access to a lot of distraction.
- Studies show we retain more knowledge when reading from printed paper than a computer screen.
- Print your material and get away from the computer. You'll learn more without distraction, and retain more.

lol. studying useless courses FTL.
seriously, why incorprate courses to your degree that have no value or knowledge correlated to that major/program?
Paying $500 for a course, not including textbooks and taxes etc, so you can study your ass off and reiterate what the proff says in lecture, so you can receive a good mark, which lets you proceed onto further courses which also has no 'usefulness' in your future career, which then leads you to a piece of paper that's worth $30,000 or more which doesn't guarantee you a job, and then having to go back to school to repeat the process, because that current piece of paper just wasn't enough in the real world. makes you think don't it...

i dont think any employer would give a rats ass about grades unless you're in accounting/finances
most of us are trying to polish our grades because of applications to grade/professional school in the future.
that said, i fucked up royally in 1st and 2nd year (cGPA is around 69%) and I need to up that to at least 80% when i walk across the stage during my convocation.

I only have 2 exams (this Fri and next Fri) but so many assignments before that.
I think that's the situation with almost everyone, as in they feel they could've done better in their 1st and 2nd years. Almost everyone doesn't truly anticipate how difficult university is compared to High School, so they don't realize how much more effort they have to put in. For those who do make it through 1st and 2nd year though, out of my friends (and myself), they find that they do better in their 3rd and 4th years because they know the amount of work they need to put in (that doesn't mean they get 100% and stuff, but they don't totally bomb some assignments/midterms like they did in first year.. which im sure a lot of us did).
I really like that a lot of grad schools only look at your last 60 credits (which they should, cause they're the most relevant to your degree and not the general courses that you take along with anyone in your faculty in 1st year at least). Unfortunately, that's not the case for a lot others =P:cry:

QFT. I fucking hate online courses...my eyes get strained reading that shit too...I dont print either because i'd be changing toners so frequently.
That and the group works required..like wtf...online course was meant to do your own things at your own time...endless mass readings and no notes that can summarize the key concepts

Cramming doesnt exactly mean you'll do bad. Some people work best under pressure.
I agree that different people will work best in different manners.
My point is most employers won't tolerate this. Most people work on a team, and if you lag behind you let team members down. Plus what happens if you wait till last minute and something goes wrong?
Its best to rid these bad habits before entering the workforce.

haha I'm definitely enjoying it too.
I do agree with one point though. I think you should go over and really understand the 80% you do know really well.. then if you have time go over the 20% that you don't understand. Also, emphasize on stuff that is later in the semester as they'll put more questions from the later half on the final because you didn't really have a midterm to be tested on it.
I hate it though when I try to understand everything, and then when it comes to a question you should understand or know that you did at one point, you lost simple marks because you forget simple things. ARGH I just hate that, especially since it would've taken less time to just review that part "better" than to understand a something you know nothing about. And you end losing marks for the things "that you don't really know" anyways, just for the mere fact that you don't understand it.

I find it really hard to get this across to students. Students want to "know everything" which just isn't possible or reasonable.
I didn't get 90s cause I knew 90% of the material really well. I could teach the 80% to friends, and knew about half of the remaining 20%.
Another tip: exams tend to focus on "core" material and not the extraneous one-off fact. How do you determine what is the core material? Get old exams/midterms/labs/assignments/projects! I cannot stress this enough, get as much old material as possible.
My first week at school I made friends with a dumb-ass in 3rd year. His marks sucked, so he had no problem giving away his old tests/assignments/labs. I never went into a course without having an idea of exactly what I would be tested on, and it sure helps narrow that 80% to study and know well.

Yeah, definitely! I've found that I've been able to get 80-90s in courses with really low class averages (55% ish, i'm in sciences) by:
1. Focusing on knowing how to do the questions that have been tested on in previous exams, and from which will most likely be tested in future exams. There's a difference from just massively reading a textbook compared with actually knowing how to do the question. In some ways, I've been guilty of knowing how to do the question but not really understanding what the point of this question is/or how it led to the answer. Usually if it's important enough, you'll encounter it in future courses and you'll recognize it, and understand it there (whether it be through the teacher re-teaching it or cause you have to understand it cause it's vital for your success)
2. Firm believer that studying is time used effectively rather than time spent studying. I'm a big procrastinator myself, but when I feel I need to study I virtually surround myself around as little distractions as possible. At times, just tell yourself that "starting to study" is harder than the actually studying. I don't know what gets me to overcome that feeling, but when I can, it works.
3. Like previously mentioned, focus on the "core" stuff. There's so much crap that they feed you in courses, but a lot of it is just for your knowledge, even if they say its important. A good thing to look over is the course objectives, and if you're able to "perform/understand/utilize" the course objectives, you should be fine.
4. This last point, I don't know if it's true for everyone but... go with your gut instinct. If you think that's the answer, just go for it. And even if you start second-guessing, don't change your answer from your initial answer unless you know WITHOUT A DOUBT that you did it wrong. But if you have any doubts after your initial thoughts, just stick with it.
Oh yeah, and if you're studying and you find your sleepy, take a POWER NAP. I don't mean one of those naps that last a couple hours.. just 15-30 mins max. Get someone to phone you or a family member to physically wake you up if you're afraid of oversleeping. Like I said about studying time.. quality over quantity. If you're still sleepy, slowly sip on pepsi or an energy drink or something... don't chug it all down, cause you're just going to get extremely wired and then set yourself up for an extreme crash that you're going to have to work yourself through if you really want to study.

Totally agreed, I hate how majority of the professional programs look at ALL 4 years for cGPA.
That's why I think pharmacy is a faculty to get in since most people apply with only 1st and 2nd year grades...it's probably best they finish their degree and get a higher cGPA before reapplying.

I've found that the majority of the grad schools look at cGPA but emphasize or really care about the last two years (although there are exceptions like medicine, which look at certain courses like Organic chem, which is done in 1st or 2nd year as well as MCat). From a lot of "talks" I've had, even if your cGPA is not that high but your last 60 credits are high, you should be fine. A lot of grad schools look at that student who cannot only perform (which is shown in your final 2 years) but that you also have the versatility to grow, adjust, and improve as a student (cause grad school is another different transition, and you have to able to adjust to it to be successful)

Nah, you've obviously haven't mastered the art of cramming. It's not how long you study, it's how you study.
That wasn't my point.
My point is cram all you want, an employer will find out your bad habits and even your good grades won't matter.
First experience with exams in post secondary. One every day this week:(.

I graduated out of OAC (Grade 13) in Ontario and found first year university to be a lot of repetition of OAC and very easy to get As without a lot of studying.
OAC has been removed in Ontario, and many other provinces don't have grade 13 either, so that might explain why 1st year is such a failure for many.
My other explanation is that I'm a small town country boy, had a beer in my hand when I was 8, first strip club when I was 15, regularly bar hopping when I was 17. By the time university came I'd already mastered the ability to party hard and get good grades in high school. Its a skill that takes many beers to learn.

That's actually good news. Its all over at once, and forces you to prepare and manage your time.
Consider is a blessing you're getting this experience early on, you'll be better off later.

Do you mind pointing me to the source that says we retain more knowledge reading from a printed paper?
I have a very low concentration level, especially when I'm on the computer (ie. like now). But sometimes, the notes are online and I don't want to waste paper to print it out.
Side note, any tips on how to study, or specifically, methods? For me, I just read my notes 3-4 times, and it somewhat works.

For me, as of right now,
I'm going through each chapter that will be tested, and writing and re-writing important sections and notes that I believe will be on the test. After writing those notes, I read the summary of each chapter along with the notes that I had just recently typed.
Then, I go through the study questions and try to answer them utilizing my notes and textbook as my final preparation before the exam.
.....I still end up with a shitty mark :haha:

There's lots, Google: "reading retention paper screen"
Recent research has found that reading a longer text on paper is 25% faster than reading the same text on a computer screen. At the same time, reading comprehension and article overview are improved.
Readers of text on paper typically concentrate fully on what they're doing, while readers of screen content are either hard at work fighting off distractions or have resigned to giving the text only cursory attention.
Forget the "wasting paper" argument the environmental hippies have driven into us. Trees regrow, as long as the paper comes from a sustainable forest (Forest Stewardship Council logo), we'll always have more paper. If you still feel bad then at least recycle it.
I always print and read. I've tried reading eBooks on my tablet PC and note: eye strain make sit uncomfortable after awhile, and I'm almost always distracted and surf the web.

I'm an engineer and will set this guy straight. Engineers are worker bees, we're typically the lowest in a company despite being well paid. We don't build bridges, roads, buildings, ... architects do, we just help architects like good worker bees.
Remember, that bridge is built by the lowest bidder who typically doesn't employ the brightest engineers. :D Doesn't that make you feel safe?

unless you work your ass off, i mean having no social life and basically grind through textbooks, assignments and wikipedia every weekend, your gpa is fucked and say goodbye to gradschool

^ Me to man! feel FUCKING GREAT!!! my brain is officially off...
engineering is the most fucking retarded degree ever
unless you are satisfied with 4-5 grand salary a month.... do not come in here.... courses averages are always scaled to 65, compared to 75 in other faculties, no chicks, nerd guys, lame jokes, assignments take up to 6 hours each, and projects and labs up to 3 days each unless you got hookups, about 20% failing rate for courses, fucks up your gpa for grad schools, 6 courses every term, always stay overnights for labs, and the general material are really hard
unless you work your ass off, i mean having no social life and basically grind through textbooks, assignments and wikipedia every weekend, your gpa is fucked and say goodbye to gradschool
when my son goes to U, i will tell him to go to arts, get straight A's, get laid like crazy, and go to Law or dental or whatever
It's not as bad as you say it is... def. no girls (only 1 in my year) but those who are usually in engineering have an aptitude for math / physics etc... so it's not that rape. I wish Engineers got a lil more respect tho!
i got over a grand in scholarship in grade 12, with 94 average in phy/chem/bio/math, and I still stuggled in engineering...
haha actually many girls from other faculties have a lot of respect for us guys in engineering... its just that some of the sauder guys dont.... they are probably jealous we get to minor commerce but they can't minor engineering.... but many of them are pretty cool too.

Sounds like you're in the wrong degree, engineering isn't for everyone.
I had the opposite experience in engineering. I kept an A+ average through all 4 years, did very little homework, found assignments easy, rarely "studied" (ie cramming days before tests, I read leisurely in my spare time)... I joined a Fraternity and spent more time drinking than studying. I overloaded on courses and essentially completed 2 engineering degrees in 5 years.
If you get it, its easy, otherwise you have to put many hours in struggling to understand. My brother struggled in the software aspects of aerospace engineering and switched to civil engineering to avoid them, and his grades improved from Cs to As.
I would probably get Fs in philosophy, yet As in engineering. You gotta find what works for you.
If you're struggling now, you might as well switch programs cause doing this everyday for the rest of your life will suck, and if its hard for you, it'll be equally hard to get a better job and better pay.
$5K/mn in $60K/yr, which is a decent salary. If you're a good engineer you'll always make well in excess of that. I started near $70K and was clearing $100K after 5 years. The 2 years before I moved to Vancouver I made $110K and $125K with only 6-7 years experience.
Grad school is a waste for engineering (except maybe Aerospace/Mechanical engineering). Its for people that cannot find jobs with their current experience/grades, or want to specialize in R&D which typically pays less (yet is very interesting). You'll learn more relevant information and gain valuable experience in 2 years of working vs 2 years of grad school.

Sorry man, that's just bad advice.
If you like it, stick with it. If you don't, do something else. You're there to learn and it sounds like you're learning. One day, it won't seem that hard anymore.. probably after you start working and get better study habits and understand how everything in your field tends to work.
I bet when you finish, you'll find a lot worse engineers than you who got worse grades, but ended up with pretty good jobs. Everybody develops at a different pace. There's always gonna be someone better than you no matter what career you choose. That's not a reason to quit something.

Engineering (or technology in general) is a constant learning process. If its hard now, it'll always be hard. if he struggles now, he'll always struggle. Its not something which one day "you get it" cause tomorrow you'll have to learn something new.
I'm not suggesting quit, I'm suggesting change directions.
I bet when you finish, you'll find a lot worse engineers than you who got worse grades, but ended up with pretty good jobs.
There's lots of bad engineers that are paid well. My comment has nothing to do with this. Its a quality of life decision. Would you want to struggle your entire life at something? Or find something you're good at?
Everybody develops at a different pace. There's always gonna be someone better than you no matter what career you choose. That's not a reason to quit something.
It takes about 10,000 hrs of practice to master something.
The reason I don't struggle with engineering is cause I've loved technology since I was young, its a hobby I enjoy in my leisure time. The engineers I see struggle aren't tech geeks. They don't enjoy constantly learning about technology in their free time. They are just in it for a good job and to be paid well.
Consider working 40hrs/week, it would take you 5 yrs to master something. Just when that happens, technology changes, and they start all over again.
I read programming books in my free time cause I enjoy learning, stuff I won't even use at work. Meanwhile coworkers I've had that struggle have no interest in learning prior to needing the knowledge.
Your comments are inline with this: "Stick with it cause you'll be paid well". No, that's just wrong. "Do it if you enjoy it", and you won't need to "stick with it" or struggle doing it.

My comments ??? That's a reach. I don't think you read what I wrote at all. You even quoted what I said: "If you like it, stick with it. If you don't, do something else." :crazy2:
I can just as easily misconstrue and summarize some BS about your comments: "If it's hard, don't try" to make my point stronger. Is that stupid thing to do or what? I guess it's not if you only care about sounding good, but not about being correct.

How do you know the barriers which are causing him to struggle now can't be overcome? He's not 30. He's just left high school. The only thing that isn't hard for most ppl that age is sitting on their asses.
Yes, engineering is a constant learning process. I'll just say this and we can disagree on this point if you wish: Most ppl i've met in eng agree with me.. after your transition period into the engineering world, your study habits become better, your ability to learn material fast becomes better, your ability to understand written material in sometimes cyptic engineering english gets better. Improving these skills goes a long way to whether you get it or not.
As you gain more experience, you'll find the same concepts are used over and over again, so the learning becomes more incremental instead of constantly throwing what you learned away. Add these things to the fact that what you do in school is so different from what you do at work, and that is why I said the things I said in my original reply.
The bottom line should be motivation & skill -- do you like this stuff and can you do it. With HS marks in the 90s, that dude obviously has some sort of potential. I believe you won't know if it's the right path unless you try it for real (eg. coop) instead of comparing it to one individual's early experience.

Cause he had high grades in HS, referenced studying lots, struggling, low salaries, no girls, no social life, ... and how engineering wasn't worth it.

I kind of agree with Taylor on this one. I'm in mechanical engineering myself. Sorry to say, but some people just aren't cut out for it. It really takes a while to have a grasp at it and fully appreciate what you're learning. Having high grades in high school/academic courses doesn't translate into success in engineering. What really helps is having hobbies and interests relevent to your field, rebuilding cars, engines, tinkering with toys. I dont find engineering difficult at all, I rarely study and get pretty decent grades. In high school I was getting 50s, 60s, 70s. I also find that the majority of students in engineering has no desire to actually become an engineering after they graduate, they're more interested in project management, or they picked engineering because they thought it's "cool", but had no idea what's it's actually about. You'd be surprised to know how many senior engineering students doesnt even know how an engine works, or even how to change the spare tire.
well i am majoring nanotechology engineering and minoring in commerce
one more year and i grad... its not that i dont get high grades in here, but im saying that if i put the same amount of effort in arts or sauder, i will definately get better grades
