VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Starting February 1st there will be 100 surveillance cameras recording throughout downtown Vancouver as part of the Olympic security plan. The city says they will be monitored for public safety, crime prevention, property protection, and incidents that need a police or emergency response.

Areas under surveillance include Robson and Granville Streets, Yaletown, and both downtown LiveCity sites.

Although there will be signs alerting people if they are in a monitored area, the camera’s aren’t sitting well with everyone on the streets of Vancouver.

This man doesn’t like the idea. “I feel like it’s a complete invasion of my privacy.”

Others aren’t concerned. “Probably if you’re going to commit a crime, you know where the CCTV cameras are. And if you’re not going to commit a crime there’s nothing to worry about.”

Footage will be kept anywhere between 30 days and one year. The city says the cameras will be taken down after March 28th but some of the infrastructure will remain in place.

The cameras won't be going anywhere after the games, the olympics is just a excuse to put them up.

They will most likely come up with a excuse like "it cost too much money to take them down" or "they are already in place, why not keep them there".

The cameras aren't going to be any help... look at London there's cameras everywhere and crime persists, its abundant even.

I get the feeling they won't take them down as well... but i hope they will..

didn't they bring in a new weapon to combat any potential rioters? like some sort of sound device? heard on the radio but i cant recall

the UK has like a million cameras now. and not a single crime has been sovled with them. london's crime rate has gone sky high in the past 10 years. (starting exactly when they baned guns from the public....)

you are talking out of your rear end

they are everywhere there, and have been ued to find murders, rapists, robbers, etc - without the footage of 'suspects' many crimes would have either been not solved or not solved as quickly

are they going to do much? no - but i can't help buy feel its a good thing - you only have something to worry if you're up to no good

it's not a weapon. it's not a sonic gun. it's not anywhere as cool as that. this whole sonic weapon is really a communication device, specifically an LRAD (long-range accoustical device). think of it as a amp'd up bullhorn/megaphone that can transmit clearly an officer's commands to a large crowd in a large area. just imagine the last time you heard someone on a bullhorn, could you hear them really clearly?

http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/11/26/vancouver-police-buy-sonic-gun/

the reason why they say it's a weapon is because it can make that same feedback noise that a regular bullhorn can, only much much louder ... and the philly police dept used that against protestors at the september g20 summit and now all the civil liberty poeple are up in arms against the LRAD.

As for the original topic, you have NO expectation of privacy in a public place. that's the legal opinion anyway. you're out and about so anyone around you can see you. the tricky part comes when people are able to get their hands on these surveillance videos (be it by legal means or otherwise) and post them for everyone else to see. i think the legal opinion would still state that there is no expectation of privacy but you'd be screwed if you wife saw you on the video with your girlfriend. that's when censoring for privacy comes into play.

there will always be crime, unless you have an totalitarian government, and even then.

crime won't go away.

those cameras in london help a lot. they help solve crimes, they don't stop it, they provide evidence.

I don't know see what the big deal is with these cameras. They are installed in a PUBLIC place, which means, your action is for ANYONE to see. If you don't want to be observed, stay home.

I'd be more concerned if these hundred weren't a tiny drop in the bucket of the massive network of cameras that record us daily in businesses, transit areas, etc, etc, all of which can already be accessed by the government if they so choose.

Your privacy, in public..?

my thoughts exactly.

while the cameras can't actually prevent crimes from happening it at least gives clues as to what happened with a visual representation rather than spotty witness testimonies.

RS meet in front of these cameras?

back on topic:

I hope that these cameras - if they decide to keep them, can get incorporated into the BC Road camera network. That way, they can double as traffic cams to keep the roads flowing.

Oh yeah, and about the privacy in public thing:
"Public privacy" is a contradiction. "Public" and "Privacy" are in a sense, complete opposites of each other
