^ what a shitty ass logic man
the degree of estimation isn't similar at all.
lottery is by pure chance since there's ~ 14million odds to win.

weather forecast just uses cloud movement, humidity, pressure etc to estimate.

anyhow the humdity is hovering around 50 right now, dont think it'll snow unless it changes drastically later on.

I have a feeling snow is not going to be an issue until Sunday or next week. I'm hoping for lots of the white stuff. I love it. If it's going to snow, let it be so much that everything stops. Well, not Internet.

General rules of thumb.......overnight/early morning

Cloud cover = no frost
Clear skies = lots of frost

Cloud cover = no fog
Clear skies = lots of fog/dew

its not gonna snow this weekend....

if it says its gona snow the day next day when u look at the forecast chances are its accurate

That was updated on wed night looking at the weekends, meaning it will never be accurate lol

vancouver's weather news is only good for one day ahead

Gumby
12-10-2009, 10:05 AM
You guys should know by now that the Lower Mainland weather forecast is never accurate. I bet that we'll see a bit of snow, but not much. It's also gonna be over the weekend, so traffic shouldn't be affected as much as on a weekday.

I remember last year when it really snowed, they didn't issue the snowfall warning until it was already coming down hard. So much for a warning.

Warnings

Metro Vancouver
4:24 PM PST Sunday 13 December 2009
Snowfall warning for
Metro Vancouver continued

Further snowfall accumulation of 2 to 4 cm near Hope expected tonight.

Major winter storm with heavy snow expected for the south coast beginning late Monday.

This is a warning that significant snowfall is expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

A strong Arctic ridge of high pressure over the British Columbia interior will continue to bring cold dry Arctic air across the north and central coast regions. Strong outflow winds through the inlets and valleys will combine with cold temperatures to give wind chill values of minus 20 or below to the north and central coasts tonight through Monday.

Meanwhile, a moist low level westerly flow interacting with Arctic air has produced snow over the Fraser Valley. The snow is expected to taper off overnight. Further snowfall accumulations of 2 to 4 cm is forecast near Hope with lesser amounts elsewhere.

Additionally, the Arctic airmass over the south coast will finally retreat into the British Columbia interior on Tuesday as a mild, moist frontal system arrives from the pacific. Snow at times heavy will begin late Monday afternoon over Vancouver Island and Monday evening for the mainland. Total snowfall amounts of up to 15 centimetres are expected before the snow changes to rain Monday night into Tuesday. Freezing rain may occur during the transition to rain particularly over the Lower Fraser Valley on Tuesday and further warnings may be issued. Strong easterly winds 50 to 70 km/h will also develop late Monday over West Vancouver Island ahead of the frontal system.

Come next summer and somewhere in Canada will hit 40c+.

Dangerously cold temperatures hit Prairies, windchills reaching minus 50

EDMONTON - Dangerously cold temperatures have settled in across much of the Prairies and northern Ontario this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued warnings, saying the windchill could reach -50C.

At those temperatures, exposed skin can freeze in less than five minutes.

In both Edmonton and Calgary, police and paramedics were moving out to help get the homeless into shelters.

So far the news is good at Edmonton's Hope Mission, a Christian social agency that provides the bulk of shelter space with five facilities and 700 beds.

Communications director Peter Gerber says while they were fuller than usual on Friday night, there were still beds left.

If shelters start to overflow, the organization also has a warehouse with washroom facilities on hand, where clients would be provided with mats and blankets.

The official count of people living on the city streets was 3,000 in October 2008, but Gerber believes the real number could be 20 per cent higher.

The increased demand, combined with a forecast predicting the cold will stay in the coming days, means it's possible the makeshift facility will come into use.

Const. Brad Rutherford said police were hoping people would call 911 or the police complaint line when they spot homeless and intoxicated people struggling against the elements.

"This is the first week of the cold snap and this is going to continue for a few days so I expect there's going to be some problems," he said.

"We can come by and check on their status and get them to a safe place."

In Calgary, Philip Gray with the Drop-In Centre said the number of homeless people in need of shelter has doubled, and donations haven't been keeping up.

"We're seeing a lot of pneumonia. Of course we're seeing a lot of flu symptoms coming in, especially since it is the flu season. We're seeing a lot of bronchitis, a lot of clients with colds and such. No frostbite yet, but we've been really good about letting a lot of people in."

In Saskatchewan, SaskEnergy reported a major jump in natural gas consumption due to the frigid temperatures.

However, company officials were ready and were employing underground caverns to meet the demand.

"Those caverns come in really handy at times like this,"said Dave Burdeniuk. "On a day like today, 70 per cent of the gas being used in Saskatchewan comes from underground caverns. If we didn't have these caverns, we'd have to spend billions building massive pipelines from producing areas in the west or southeast."

The cold temperatures are expected to last through Sunday.

Yup that is what happened to me.

I pressed on the brake, abs kicked in right away. Let go, tried again, same thing. Only way I stopped the car was throwing my car almost onto the sidewalk where there was a little snow to gain some grip. I came to a stop pretty much sideways. Winter tires seem to do nothing on pure ice :(

you don't have to be a douche and post up the METAR/TAF information. If your going to post it up use plain language. Most people on RS don't speak aviation.

Plus weather data is provided by Environment Canada for Nav Canada, which is updated every hour.

Just came back from SFU. When I was going up there someone in a huge ass SUV with summer tires was sliding back down the hill near the bottom of the parking lots. I had to throw it in reverse to avoid them hitting me. Then some douchebag comes up behind me and starts honking to move foreward...lol

Then on the way down some guy in a Camry was doing 110+ from the lots to the intersection with the road covered in slush/snow.

Gotta love the "i'll ignore the snow and pretend it is a hot summer day" driving method lots of people use.

Was snowing a bit on the way, but nothing major.

That was what tipped me off. :D Also the car seemed a bit "lacking" in detail compared to the real thing. Nice pic though. Are those styrofoam bits?

btw for all you non-pilots out there METARs aren't actually that hard to read. I'm sure there's a website somewhere that can decipher them.

METAR CYVR 140100Z 10005KT 12SM SCT016 OVC078 00/M01 A2985 RMK SC3AC5
SLP109=

METARs provide WAY more info than the Weather Network. The reason why they don't bother though is because most people only care about what's going on at ground level. It's been a while since I last read one, but it's something like this. Brings back memories. :D Anyone who's done flight training should be able to provide more information.

METAR
CYVR = IATA code for Vancouver International (C = Canada obviously)
140100Z = 14 (December), 0100 Zulu = 0100GMT = around 1500 or 3pm
10005KT = winds inbound from 100deg True (ie winds heading in a WNW direction, "from" the 100deg mark on a compass rose), 5 knots.
12SM = 12 Statute Miles visibility (1 statute mile = 1.609km = 5280ft)
SCT016 OVC078 = Clouds SCaTtered (takes up 3-4/8 of sky) above 1600ft, OVerCast (8/8 of sky) above 7800ft
00/M01 = Temperature 0C, Dew point -1C. M = minus.
A2985 = altimeter set to 29.85" mercury (standard pressure is 29.92" Hg at sea level) - used to calibrate the altimeter on the plane
RMK = remark
SC3AC5 = I think it has to do with what's coming down from the sky at the moment of the report but can't remember.

Acura604
12-14-2009, 12:48 PM

It's good, at least this way most of RS can get to their exams on time and not have to wake up hours earlier. Although I am disappointed that I don't get to put my awd + winter tires to work =p

I think it's safe to say that the snowfall warning was an epic fail and you really have to love our weather even though most of us bitch about the rain. It basically snows for 2 days followed by mild, rainy weather to clean the crap up. Compare that to rest of Canada which is stuck with cold, snowy, arctic like weather until March/April.

Hwy 1 and most lower level roads from Coquitlam to W. Van are perfectly clear. No black ice, nothing - just wet.

Off to bed.
