McDonald's Canada adding free Wi-Fi

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - McDonald's Canada is going to add free wireless Internet service at a number of its restaurants, following the lead of its U.S. parent company.
It says "Metro Vancouver is being considered as part of the initial roll-out of Wi-Fi in the months to come." It's expected McDonald's will tie the Wi-Fi move to its sponsorship of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
McDonald's already offers Wi-Fi at 11,000 of its 14,000 locations in the U.S. but now says it will be free of charge starting next month. It currently charges $2.95 U.S. for two hours of Internet service.

That is great news! Hopefully most of the 24hr branches get it so students can study there! Especially the Kingsway and Victoria branch.... nothing else around that neighbourhood (East Van. / Burnaby) is open late... other than the Blenz on Kingsway but that's always jam packed during exam times hah

HK's has a limit of 20 minutes, after that you have to pay. It came in handy on many occasions for me, before I had 3G. I think they should have done a 20 minute limit in North America too, to prevent people from loitering all day, taking up seats

We need to catch up on technology?
and having wireless access everywhere does that?

Why don't students just study at home.
Why don't students just study at home.
maybe they require loud background noise in the background as opposed to a quiet library.
or maybe it's to show off that they're college students by studying where people normally socialize.
Why don't students just study at home.
Because parents cramp their style? I think to escape chores is more like it. Assuming students still live at home.

Im sure parents will leave you be if you say your studying for an exam. Plus, I do know some people who live on their own yet they rather study at Blenz. Weird.

Yeah, my kids tell me that all the time. If they actually studied that much, they should be a genius by now. LOL.
I check and there's like 50 gazillion chat windows open. Maybe they're chatting about their assignment - yeah, right!
They friggin forget, I used to be a student, too.

I dont get it, how hard is it to plug in a wireless router and have and give out free internet?
If i was the owner of a McD's franchise or any other franchise for that matter, I would've jumped on this train a long time ago.

Was the HQ location (by willingdon) the only one with free wifi? I swear I was using free wifi there, though like HK, had a time limit before you had to purchase additional time.
Denny's offers free wifi, by the way.

The HQ McDonald's has had WiFi for quite some time. They offered it in order to cater to the local corporations in the area and offered a voucher for WiFi upon purchase, good for I believe 30 minutes or an hour, or something of the like.

This is exactly it.
My mom was so outrageous the other night I literally lost it and punched a whole in my own wall.
I was studying at UBC from 3pm and I get a call at 2AM from my mom asking me where I was. I said I was studying at UBC, which I was. She has the nerve to tell me that I should get home because UBC is " dangerous " at that time.
Now if I'm at someones party, club, mall, theatre, it's a reasonable justification, but at UBC?!

I can't believe that after raising you for 20 years, she expected you to come home so that she knows you're safe.
That's insane! I mean, you were studying at UBC (which she probably paid for), and she had the nerve to tell you to hop back in your car (that she also likely paid for), to come home because it's dark? Because the West side has had a recent string of shootings? Because you're probably one of a only handful of students still left at UBC? Because it's raining/snowing outside? She's clearly off her rocker...
I would have punched two wholes in my wall.

Lol i meant to type WHOLE hole.
Anyways.
Tuition paid: by me
Car + insurance + all bills paid: by me
UBC is 15 minutes away from home.
It was not raining.
My argument was that if I can't study at home (due to distractions etc) then where else can I study if even UBC is "dangerous".
But I don't think studying at McDonalds would work out too much, you'd come out smelling like deep fryer oil.

for me the only distraction is the internet, which obviously will be available to me at the library, waves coffee, etc.
At home, it doesn't matter how loud other people are, I'm in my room, doing my thing, and I am usually streaming classical music or piano music from Whisperings so yeah...quite soothing. OH yeah make sure to have earphones.

They should open the wi-fi McDonalds to 24 hours before implementing this. Also, study whores will get fat xD
it`ll only be useful if they add more plugs near seats though...
most ppl`s laptops last on avg only 3 to 4 hours

If I had to deal with a woman like your mom, I'd be punching her, not the wall. Hopefully it would knock some sense into her ignorant head too.

if you study too much in a place you don't like, you'll just end up hating it and avoiding it.
so why not go someplace that's comfortable or fits ur vibe?

I hate even sitting inside mcdicks.. I find most of their branches filthy. The floors, the chairs, the trays, and especially the tables.
But good on them, WiFi doesn't cost tooo much to setup and maintain, so it seems like the right marketing move to draw more customers.

How will you be able to access the internet? Will it be unsecured? Or "Password" given to you? Or like Starbucks, you sign in with a giftcard/starbucks card?

I assume it'll be a VPN that you log into. If they were smart, they would require everyone to open user accounts for it. I doubt it'll be as ghetto as installing a D-Link router and opening it to everyone... But you never know :lol

I agree,
However, I'm not too sure what they're trying to do with their brand really.
I see two things happening, they're trying to get more students to come eat at mcdonalds by turn IT into the study place to be (since I'm assuming thats one of the main reasons for wifi). For example from their commercials you always see the broke ass students collecting change or whatever to get over there. But their trying to take the healthy route too.
But I was just reading on global news how they're going into Olympic mode. They're promoting this free food for athletes things at Mcdonalds and claiming their products provide a balance of nutrients. Personally, I find the second part a bit hard to believe. They're also trying to convert certain 'restaurants' into something like Olympic headquarters.
Chiasson noted many restaurants are being renovated with features like fireplaces and leather chairs and most of the 110 Metro Vancouver outlets will have flat-screen TVs that will show Olympic broadcasts.
“We want every one of our restaurants to be like an Olympic headquarters, where consumers can come in and watch the Olympics in a clean and safe environment,” he said.
Lol gotta love PR people

wow there's a lot of people talking about how HK is so much better than here. We get it. HK is more advanced than Canada. stfu already.
Most Blenz and Waves have open wifi. It's not a big deal since the signal doesn't really leave the store.
