great way to promote mindless fighting, just in time for Olympics.
Maybe it's just me, but I've watched a few matches myself and most fights have the exact same pattern
1) ding ding ding
2) 2 guys circling around poking long range jabs
3) 2 guys gets closer and then hitting each other randomly
4) 1 guy eventually falls and the other guy rides him & give him a 50 hit combo
5) Blood everywhere
6) Game Over

MMA is fucking retarded. Well.. not the matches themselves, only the Ed Hardy Tap out wearing douche bags that THINK they are fighters trying to get in fights everywhere. The gym I go to is riddled with them. I hate it..
One second I'm working out, next 80% of the guys there stop working out to watch the TV because a fight is on.

lol, so much hate. I have no intention to disrespect, just merely pointing out wut I see.
But 1 thing I really don't get is the obsession over bloodshed. I just don't understand why ppl r so excited to see blood flying everywhere. I mean I'm ok with gore movies and popping ppl's head in GTA. But when real ppl get all cut up & shit, it's just kinda painful to watch. It's just like how North Americans despise chicken fighting from the SE Asia, claiming that it's animal cruelty. Substitute the chicken with human and we get the UFC/MMA, and hell, boxing is pretty much along the same line.
Why can't everyone just get along and go drink bubble tea?

Because chickens/dogs are manipulated to use their fight instincts to kill each other. If you believe dog fighting and MMA are the same then you should consider that this isn't your average backyard fight night with bare knuckles.
These guys train. I don't know if you know what training means, but it involves several months of nutritional, physical and mental preparation with professionals.
MMA is the same as Football, hockey and any other physical contact sport. Just because you're squeamish about blood doesn't mean every MMA fun is lusting after blood.

I agree with most of what you said. Most people will probably not agree with me but aren't these fighters being manipulated, just like chickens & dogs, to use human's fighting instincts to kill each other as well. But in this case they are manipulated by people with money. LoL, i guess that goes with everything else in life too.
Oh well, I guess I'll stay out of this argument & let u guys enjoy

5) hats everywhere

a chicken or dog does not make the conscious decision to fight. its more like they're brainwashed into doing it as an instinct. and the ufc a regulated sporting league. not one person has died in the UFC or modern MMA leagues. its not all about trying to kill the guy, tons of fighters use submission tactics that arent intended to kill (armbar for example) to win fights. and if you knock someone out, the fight ends.. you cant go in for the kill (except maybe if you're hendo fighting bisping lol)

Haven't been a fan of UFC since the days of Frank Shamrock. I remember UFC 5 or 6 was supposed to be held at the Agrodome. However, the city disapproved of it because of much negative feedback from parents ( mothers in particular ). It was weird since it's an 18 and over event - it's not like high school kids (under 18) can watch the event. Us kids were watching teh PPV events on the blackboxes...hehe.

You're misuse the word manipulate.
Fighters choose to fight and can tap out or withdraw any time they want. Animal fighting isn't the same.
They're training one aspect of their primal fighting instinct, just like runners train to run fast (like after a prey back in the monkey days). Hell, one can make the argument that in order to be a prosperous businessman one needs to successfully use traits attributed to 'fighting instincts': strategic, dominant, confident, etc.

Penn vs GSP would be epic but I can't see it happening, This will be a huge card tho. Maybe a comeback fight for Cote if hes good to go.
In my opinion, MMA is the HEIGHT of ANY physical sport. Can you tell me whats more primal than training your own body to the fullest of its extent? Whats more stupid, training with a metal rod trying to hit a round object the size of your balls into a hole the size of your balls on a field where thousands can live on, or training your own body to its peak where you can dominate someone in a closed arena to a point where they cannot fight back? That is a true sport. And if you actually chose to watch some of these fights, these are not dog fights. They fight with technique, where body size and mass are only part of the equation. Watch the UFC top 100 and you will be able to see how back in UFC 1 and 2 a lanky guy can use jiu jitsu to submit almost anyone who challenged him. It has evolved so much since than with people training in all aspects of sports fighting to create something where you try to balance your style in order to stand up to any kind of opponent in any kind of fighting.
And if you tried to understand the sport you will see how much respect a lot of these fighters have. They start out the fight with death in their eyes because this is the ultimate competition: your in a ring by yourself with bare hands fighting someone with no help from teamates and padding, and only your mind and body to protect yourself. When the fight is over the hate is over and they show each other SO much respect for the skill and heart that they showed in a sport where winning means you have ultimately dominated the other person. That's REAL respect and that's why i've grown to love this sport more and more. I'm really glad its finally comming to vancouver, and cant wait to see GSP because he deserves so much respect, and gives so much respect.

Watching two people beat up one another doesn't appeal to me, but I'm glad that this is one thing to help offset the unfortunately true stereotype that Vancouver is a No-Fun City.

I think the City of Vancouver will be putting a tax on the tickets so they get a cut of the profits. I don't know what the numbers are, but they had a very postive economic impact in Montreal.

This is exactly the type of image that people USED to have about mma or any fighting sport. It is a very ignorant way of looking at a very technical sport. I guess its a matter of opinion, and you are intitled to yours, but for god sake please dont wreck what has taken years to build through this kind of negative public communication. Long before MMA was brought to the mainstream it was going on all over the place, it was just a matter of people keeping their mouths shut about it and it happening underground. Now that it is regulated by a sports board, and people, MILLIONS of them, will pay to watch the SPORT it can no longer be classified as a cock-fight. These fighters are elite athletes and dedicate their lives to perfecting an art of fighting (or MANY arts of fighting). They should be treated with the same sort of respect as any other athlete in other sports. MMA was explained VERY well a few posts ago, so i just hope that everyone can keep it cool and safe for this ground-breaking event. I know i will attend, but i sure hope that everyone willl be on their best behaviour....

It will be an honour to be a part of something that special. I rarely go to live sporting events just because the TV view is better ;) HD FTW!!!

I still think that Penn will headline this PPV. He doesn't fight in Vegas anymore and usually takes 5-6 months after his last fight to his next.
Maynard fights in January...so if he wins and doesn't get seriously hurt. then I see that matchup... otherwise, it could be Penn/Edgar fight.
And possibly have Kalib Starnes as the Co-Headliner

I heard that you might be better off in the second row as the cage does seem to obstruct a lot of the fight.

I used to like MMA when it actually was mixed martial arts. You used to see different martial arts styles against each other like karate vs muay thai. Now all I see on the highlights are two guys hugging each other on the ground. The best thing about MMA back then was the only rules were really enforced were no biting and no eye gouging
