So for the people who walk/jog/run on the treadmill, what is your routine? Currently I'm doing 6 incline, 6.0 speed for 30 minutes which is 3 miles everyday.

a guy at my work does slow walking on treadmill for an hour, then an hour and half next workout day etc.. he says that helps cut faster.. i know its bullshit.. HIIT is the best.. but its working for him, hes pretty ripped.

i warm up for about 3-5mins on 6.0 & 2.0 incline. Then once im warmed up i pretty much max out the treadmill at 15.0 for as long as i can hold it moderately comfortable, which is 3ish minutes. Set it back to 6.0. Jog for a min or so to catch my breath. Bring it back up to 15.0 for as long as i can. and repeat. Usually go through the cycle 3-4 times depending on my mood that day. Then usually i would max the incline at, i think 12.0. Set speed at 4.0 for roughly 15mins, again, depending on how my mood is that day.
Whole process is 30mins, give or take 5 mins.
For me, it feels great running at 15.0. it almost feels as if im floating, lol. Feels even better afterwards!

20-30 minutes 3 times a week...
1. steady pace at 7-8 mph
2. 3 minute intervals of 6mph at 6% incline
3. steady pace at 7-8 mph at a 2% incline
Then once a week....i do my long run which can range between 8km to 12km outside.

I do prefer to run outdoors but in this weather the treadmill makes more sense plus I have one at home so it's more practical.

^^ Im prepared for the cold and rain. With the cold gear...running in the rain is just as fun. As for snow....not so much.

i use to run at a speed of 5 with 0 incline for 3 miles but i can't seem to keep up the speed without my knees starting to buckle so now i run at a speed of 3 with 1.5 incline for 30 minutes (~1.5 miles). it's not very fast but it keeps my pace up without killing me.

The fact that he's ripped probably has nothing to do with his treadmill routine. Or anyone for that matter, unless they are doing heavy sprints on them.

I love running outside but if I must run at the gym I tend to break it up into two 15 min. sessions so I dont get bored. Also I do sprints but minimal incline.. Sometimes if I dont feel like running I will do a walk on the max incline.

I'm working myself up to do a 10km marathon in Spring. I have a few friends and coworkers who do marathons.

is it really necessary to hit the gym and work on the legs even if you are a long distance runner?
any effective exercises with free weights?

i do 5 min warmup at 0 incline and 3.5mph
then 1 minute sprint at 9mph, 2 minutes at 4mph, and 2 minutes at 2.5mph, then repeat the 1-2-2 cycle until maybe 20-25 minutes.

Usually I start by walking quickly for a minute while finding the right channel on the TV lol. I do 5k 4-5 times a week. Depending on how ambitious I am it takes 20-30 minutes. Rarely I really give'r and do it 16-17 minutes. Lost 50 lbs in 5 months doing this and eating better.

I'm going start up my outdoor routine next month.

Nice. I lost 60lbs within a year because of the treadmill and a clean diet. It's amazing how running alone transforms your body and how good you feel overall.
