: So my car got broken into...

I drive a 94 civic and my car was broken into a couple hours ago. I had parked in front of my friends house by 54th and Selkirk. They only took my ipod which I don't care too much about (just sucks cuz I had it left under my seat) but now I have to deal with a broken window (passenger side).

Now what I want to know is how much approximately does it cost to replace it? I'm guessing my best option is to pay the $300 deductible. If the window itself is cheaper, then I'll just get my dad's friend to fix it.

Thanks guys

$300 deductible. does not affect your insurance.

however the ipod was not "bolted" down so thus, if u want to claim it, it will probably be considered under house insurance, which most house insurance starts around 500 deductible minimum (actually most is around 1000 now)

Since civic is a dim a dozen.. if you want to diy.. call the local junkyards.. they will have a glass in stock and will probably be cheaper than the deductible.

If you bought your Ipod with a credit card, your CC insurance may cover the loss. That is assuming you still have the receipt and CC bill for the time you bought the Ipod.

Are you capable of taking your door panel off? Because other than that, only 2 bolts hold your window to the track. I can't see anyone ask more than $100 for the glass. The job takes less than an hour.

glass is cheaper than the 3 bills u would have to surrender over to ICBC

I doubt they broke into his car because they saw an Ipod, since he said the Ipod was under his seat.

Lesson learned, learn to read.

I am pretty sure he is just indicating that you shouldn't leave shit in your car (irregardless if they instigate the theft or not) if you do not want things stolen. He made no mention of the fact that the ipod was the factor in the theft.

Thanks for the replies. I went to Mitchell Island to purchase the glass for $80.

Of course I know not to leave valuables in the car and I never do. It just so happened I forgot about it and now I have to deal with the consequences. I doubt that they saw the ipod (old one anyways) and thus broke into my car. Call it shitty luck or whatever.

Thanks for the help

Maybe I read it differently.

Here's what I gathered:
-OP lost 2 things in the break-in: a window, and an Ipod
-he's not looking for advice on how to prevent his car from being broken into
-hirevtuner is insinuating that the OP must have left something of value out in the open that made his car a target, when the OP said he only lost an Ipod

I don't buy hirevtuner's "advice" as anything but a thoughtless remark. Anybody and everybody already knows you shouldn't leave valuables out in the open. Leaving BS advice like this in a thread is like spitting on somebody's face after the fact; it's completely unnecessary.

But as I said, maybe I read it differently.

nns: You have it right. I had a feeling I would get a remark like that regardless of what I stated in the original post but it's not a big deal. I made this thread looking for some info and got what I needed. Thanks

feel the pain, got my brand new to me car (really nice car) on dec 31, i discovered yesterday that some arse hat smashed my sunroof, went through my stuff, taking NOTHING and left

they hit 5 cars in my underground (yaletown)

didn't take my V1, though... which is nice - obviously crack heads... i'm sick to my stomach, just wish i'd caught them in the middle of doing it, i'd have broken both of their arms, no joke

there are just certain models out there that petty thieves like to target at. Next time buy a car that's not considered high risk by ICBC.

there's a certain % chance that a car thief is stealing something
but there's also a certain % chance that your car gets targeted.

So if you can drop the second chance to almost nil it won't matter where you park it.

 Hey I know! Why don't you try breaking out of the car to reverse the process of it being broken into?

I had a similar situation long time ago. Friends 93 civic coupe driver window got smashed. Was like $150 or something to replace the window. Some chinese place did it. I'm quite certain it would be less than the deductible.

Just odd that in that area someone would do a smash and grab. Is your civic flashy at all?

Just to clarify, If glass is the only damage, deductible is $200 and not $300.

Yeah, I didn't think it would happen in that area at all.

No my civic is completely stock. Nothing that would stand out of the ordinary.

my car and my GFs car were both broken into in our under ground in 3 days, then 2 days later another car in the UG was hit. i dont keep anything in my car.. all they got was the GPS, and they broke into her car to try to steal her GPS harness as mine was hard wired into the car.. window was 260$ and came with a full interior detailing.. feels bad to have your car broken into.. you almost feel dirty

most shops will replace the window just under the 300 deductible amount given that no body or molding damages are involved.

i was thinking if there was a way to prevent these windows from breaking then ALOT of windows wouldnt be needing replacing and ALOT of people will be saving $$$...

so i thought maybe what if we put some type of film on the front windows, kind of like tint film but probably something stronger.... i've never seen a tinted window break befor but i am sure the glass wouldnt shadder into 10000 peices... what do u guys think? what if we put clear film on both sides of the glass... could this possible prevent junkies from breaking into our cars? theres much benifits from this like what if we got into an accident involving the front window to get smashed, there would not be peices flying into ur face.. downfalls of this i could only think that once it breaks it would not shatter? then would block view from window while driving, but how many times will an accident like this happen that would block ur view from driving(not much)... and how many times will a junkie break into someones car(a fuckin lot of times)?? almost everyone i talked to about this has had their windows broken into, ending up paying 300 deductable to repair..

Reason why doing this is pretty much illegal is cause what if you crash into a lake or river and have to break the windows to get out. You can't kick the front windshield out. You've gotta break the front windows with a kick or sharp tool. You're done for if the front glass doesn't shatter. Same reason why it's illegal to have front tint (a long with it being dangerous at night).

if its cracked/chipped its 200
if its broken is 300

Sorry, that is totally misleading information.

The only time your comprehensive deductible is $200 is when it is your windscreen that is damaged as a result of a flying object (i.e. Rock).

$300 applies to all other windows if smashed, chipped, etc.

For windshield damage caused by flying objects such as rocks or gravel, the deductible is $200 (if you bought Comprehensive coverage with the minimum $300 deductible).

i picked up a window for my bros civic only was 120$ then i paid somebody 20$ to install it.

if you do diy make sure you take out the seal and theres NO shards of glass left if there is one, it will make your new window break lol

Why do so many people leave such valuables in the car? My car got broken into the other day but they broke nothing and got nothing either.

I would've rubbed the ice tea cans on my ass and put them back. Then I would have stalked you for two days waiting for you to drink them. When you drank them I'd laugh my ass off, the same ass that was previously rubbed on your drink. The circle is complete.

When I had my beater I always left it unlocked.. Wasnt worth getting windows smashed.. I didnt even have the deck screwed down so they wouldnt damage the center console if they were to steal it.. Luckily for the 3 years Ive had my Suzuki swift no break in's ever occured.. I even had a pretty decent deck in there too... Now that I have my corolla... I try to keep it as clean as possible so people assume its just another corolla with nothing in it... So they think :P. I love my non heatbag cars...

i dont think its realy the car that matters... its all about whats in the car, how much stuff looks like is in there, ipods, change, if it looks like the owner keeps alota shit in there they are gona smash it... the junkies just need $$$ to get high probably, unless its some teenagers, either way they are doing it for $$$... i am sure these guys use a flashlight to see whats in the car befor they smash it to make sure its worth their time..
