: Whats this thing in every backseat of a car? (well most)

Ever thought about ripping that thing off the car because of the waste of leg room in the back seat? I have. What is it anyway?

Almost every car has this "wall" except SUVs. But there are actually cars that don't have it, like my own, the Acura 1.7el. Know any other vehicles that dont have this wall? Lets hear.

Edit: can someone delete my thread or take away my fails?

The hump is there for the transmission and drive shaft on rwd cars. On some FWD cars it is for the exhaust system.

The Civic EK and the gen after has this "flat floor" feature which they boast it will give the rear seat more room.

That's about it. The hump gives the car more torsional rigidity than a flat floor too in theory. Like a piece of S shaped piece of steel is stronger to bending than a flat one.

get a 'fit' if you want to rip it off.
fit had a relocated fuel tank which is also near there

EK floors are not flat. '01+ had the flat floor.

One interesting feature is a flat floor. Despite wholesale adoption of front-wheel drive in the car industry, the old "tunnel" has remained prominent in many cars because of the rigidity it promotes. Honda has found a way to maintain the rigidity while gaining additional space.

Resistance to torsion in the body is up by 53 per cent, and bending stiffness by 19 per cent. New body assembly techniques have allowed for reductions in body panel apertures of up to 50 per cent, for a higher quality look

It's a gun holder and a space for the optional fridge your dealer offers. Some say it's where the squirrel/hamster lives that power your car. It's also the most ideal seating position for your girlfriend since it makes her spread her legs.

In the trunk or on her knees in front of you since there's so much leg room ;)

As a child, have your parents ever made you sit on it because a 5 seater car was too crowded for 6 people?
Especially in Hong Kong. lol

Exactly. It was exactly what I was thinking when I am getting shots by the techs and mechanics here.

To fail givers:

Im pretty sure not everyone knows what that hump on the car is, even very intelligent people. Ask your mom or your boss and see if they know what it is (if not, might as well say fail to them).

Be grateful that I brought up this topic because its unique and not much attention goes on to it. Im shaking up the automotive forum and giving it spice over worn out topics about bimmers and lexus or cars from outer space.

Fair enough, since a simple Google search won't yield you much info. But why did you fail yourself?

Most rwd's don't have it. My rwd volvo has the tranny tunnel, but then the driveshaft loops down towards the ground and angles back up for the rear dif. Gives more leg room for the wimmenz in the back.

Me.

i say hey ladies, my mercedes. hold 4 in the back, 2 if you fat.

My IS has a bump the size of a camel. it's actually pretty close to the rear seat height. pretty much can seat 2 people in the back comfortably.
