So over the holidays b/c I had no work... i went to check out the hype.

Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodle !!!!!

So after an hour of lining up.. we were finally seated.

The noodles had a great elastic texture to them... and were cooked just right.
The soup base tasted great.. it had that chinese herbal beef stock taste to it
The meat was tender
The portions were average
The price was... not worth it imo.

The menu is small, the prices were around 10 bucks for a bowl of noodles, appies were around the 6 dollar range therefore my overall experience was not a great one.

Would I go back ??? MAYBE... but not anytime soon.. i rather scarf down a bowl of ramen for the same price... or order myself a delicious pho for half the price.. hahaa

Rating... 7.5/10

This place won't close down cuz Fairchild owns it. Even so, $10+ for a bowl of noodle is a bit outrageous.

G-men is a fad too cuz it is like the only authentic ramen place in richmond, it is a monopoly

It isn't because there's a ramen place @ Parker Place. I personally love G-Men for their ramen and rice, but the price is way too pricey. Their also anal about seats and it always seems like their closed cause they always run out of soup and just stop operating when they do.

Well, you got to think about it,

for 7 bucks at twinkle in with their lunch meal, you get a drink as well

that is so much cheaper and better!

The soup at this new place is not bad, the noodles aint bad either but 11 dollars is really steep.

I went there on Monday night at 8p.m.
30 mins wait in line for 6 people table

IMO it is over price for $11 for a bowl of Taiwanese beef noodle
It did taste good. soup, noodle were great.
Just the Hyde right now. Nothing special
won't last long

Tony's is pretty good... its about the same as Wang's noodle house...

Lao Shang Dong is better than the two mentioned above..

Back on topic... Chef Hung's noodles do taste alot better than all three and the soup base is quite different. Btw.. they do not have fried chicken thigh/leg with noodles... its mostly beef brisket/tendon.

Kintaro is not all that great... i would not line up an hour for kintaro.. i would just hit up benkei instead.... or menya... etc.....

umm , this isn't ur typical chinese beef brisket noodle .. I haven't been to this restaurant so I don't know how authentic it is. As far as I know, the authentic taiwan beef noodle does belong to taiwan and is totally different from the chinese style, which can be found everywhere in taiwan

I have, and I would say that the chef there is the real master in Vancouver. I know his history, what restaurants he's opened & sold.

http://www.604foodtography.com/2009/07/30/taiwan-beef-noodle-king/

Another favorite of mine is Accord on Kingsway.

http://www.604foodtography.com/2009/08/28/accord-food-house/

I think for TW beef noodles, it is a little hard to say of one place that they serve the best, because everyone makes it slightly different. There is no SET recipe for it that is passed through generations and families, so there will always be some variations/slight differences.

the holy trifecta of asian noodle soups will always be pho, laksa and raman nothing else.

What is raman? :P
For laksa...I would say go to Bo.

http://www.604foodtography.com/2009/12/20/bo-laksa-kings-joyce-wellington-vancouver/

I lke Kintaro & Benkei, both for different reasons. Kintaro for the authentic feel & dive like environment, fatty broth & meats, and Benkei for the more modern & varied menu.

I would like to try Motomachi or G-Men to compare though!

Chef Hung's place sucked ass (for its price).
Nothing special just super overpriced for very basic regular beef noodles.
Portion was really small for the price you pay too.

I have to agree with MugenEvolution that Pearl house has the best taiwanese beef noodle so far and I also like the one in crystal mall food court. It has a special herbal taste in their soup.

PS: Lao shan dong is just disgusting. Unless you like MSG shit.

I've walked by this Chef Hung place a couple times but I was crunched for time so there was no way I was gonna line-up to get in... but after reading the reviews here I'm glad I didn't since it doesn't seem to be worth it. At $11 a bowl that's outrageous! Most other places have it for roughly 3/4 of the price! I'll wait til the "fad" dies down then maybe if they aren't so busy then maybe their quality will be more top notch and the prices will go down?... since he is supposed to be super famous for his noodles ...

LSD is great for value and it's the quantity is huge!... but it's definitely not the best bowl I've ever had. The noodle was pretty good, thick and just the right chewy texture but the soup wasn't that impressive.

willystyle
01-07-2010, 12:52 PM
Aside from the quantity and price, I actually prefer LSD's beef broth over other ones I've tried, such as Tony's Beef Noodle, Wang's Beef Noodle, and No.1. Beef Noodle.

tbh, all the authentic taiwanese places that were SUPER good are all closed down now. like ricos in richmond and "si ma ma" that use to be across the street from mercedes benz on broadway. si ma ma was located in that complex with the macs, adult source video and fish on rice...that place was beyond amazing and i cried when they closed down.

si ma ma was the dopest place on earth! my mom would take us kids there every weekend despite the drive because it was SO worth it.

i totally remember the chicken on rice dish--they actually still had it when they changed it to a "cantonese" style restaurant but it wasn't enough to keep us going there after all the taiwanese dishes were taken off the menu.

my favorites included 'you yu geng' (squid thick soup), mi gao (rice cake) and i loved how their marinated tofu was somewhat dried. omgg....seriously i'd sell my body if it was to get them to reopen again.

Tried when they opened back in the summer or so last year. Never going back again as the everything I ordered sucked. Beef Noodles, got some rice, a bubble tea, and spicy wontons. Maybe they have improved or maybe not but based on my first experience you can count me out.

Went to Chef Hung last night. Lined up for 30mins and I had the Beef spicy Noodle (#1 on the menu-forget what it was called) and I had the thin noodle with it. In addition, ordered a few appys such as Beef Tribe and Beef Wrap. The beef tribe was really tender and tasty. The beef wrap was decent. Nothing to rave about there. Then on to the beef noodle soup which I found the quality to be very good. The texture of the noodle was chewy and was cooked to perfection. The beef was very tender and not dry at all. The soup base was very tasty and to my amazement I wasn't thirsty at all after eating there. So I don't think they use much MSG or any at all compared to other noodle joints. I enjoyed the food very much and so did my other friend I went with. I would go back again. Lining up for 30mins isn't so bad since you are inside the mall. When you go there just think of quality over quantity. There portion is a bit smaller than most noodle joint but you get quality and freshness which I will take any day over quantity.

Good read, personally I guess I wouldn't mind paying a couple extra bucks if it really is that good. I think most people get thrown off their expectations when they have to stand in line for almost an hour then pay $11 for a little bowl of beef noodle.
