Just thought I'd throw this idea out there, I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in a photowalk with fellow Revscene photographers. It'll give everyone a chance to learn from one another, gain some new tips, get creative ideas, that sort of stuff. Some location ideas I have in mind would be Granville Island, Chinatown, and downtown. These locations I find give a lot of variety in things to shoot but of course please suggest other locations also. If anyone is interested, I'll do my best to organize something together.

well I'm glad this has garnered a lot of interest. This photowalk would be on a weekend as I think a lot more of us would be free to go. Personally I'm leaning towards Granville Island since its relatively "easy" in terms of variety of stuff to shoot.

Captain Picard, your friend can come along to but seeing as most on this part of the forum have DSLRs, he/she may feel a bit left out. Ideally I'd like this photowalk to be not too big in terms of numbers just because its easier to learn from each other in a tighter group. If mana and senna and/or other veterans want to be "mentors" or just be around to help some of the noobies out, that'd be appreciated. I'm no expert but I'll try to give tips when I can.

If we get enough input or responses, maybe we can get something organized for this weekend?

yep I realize that, that's why I would suggest being there at 8:30 in the morning, the market opens at 9am. If we met up that early, it's really not that busy and gives us a lot of space to roam around. We could also have lunch down there too. But of course I'm open to suggestions. I can shoot almost anywhere.

weatheroffice seems to get it right more often. They're also west coast based I believe, whereas Weather Network is east coast and couldn't get a forecast for vancouver right if their life depended on it...

You guys are a bunch of wimps for not going out on a rainy day ( :p )...that's when some of the best photos can be made. If it's pouring, that's another story. Carry an umbrella, plastic bag or hide it under your jacket if you're scared of your camera getting wet. A sunny day can be the worst for photos. I'll go out if it's cloudy or raining, but not if it's super sunny.

Granville island is not a good place to go shoot if it's a sunny day. I think it's more interesting if it's cloudy or rainy.

Just got my camera under a week ago, would be so down to learn from some of you guys!

I'd like to get my self a pro storm jacket, but those things are like $50USD plus $20 shipping! yikes!

I'd have to see how bad the rain is.

Granville Island is definitely a cloudy day place to shoot. The neutral light really brings out the contrast of colours around the place.

$50 for a storm jacket is cheap, and I dont think it'll be very good. I have a $50 Viking from army and navy and a $300 montane one. At first when i bought the montane i was kicking myself for spending $300 on a piece of cloth that is so thin that it looks like it'll tear, but it wasn't until i used it in field that it justified the hefty price 10x over.

The $50 is good for 2 hours in the rain, anymore it either soaks through or your body heat condenses and the inside starts dripping with your sweat.

The $300 has NEVER gotten me wet and i've stood in the pouring rain for 14 hours straight when i worked in film. Although paper thing, the material keeps you exptremely warm without condensing sweat as it's very breathable. It's incredible how waterproof and breathable the material is. It's called E-vent, its Montane's version of hyvent (north face) or goretex, but better.

So all in all if you want something to keep you dry while out in light rain for an hour or so 1 day outta the year, buy a $50 one as it's sufficient and you can throw it away if it gets ripped or something. But if you want something that will last you forever in waterproofing ability and will keep you dry in teh rain days on end, spend the big bucks for a high end one because you'll totally thank yourself when you go home after a 10 hour trek through the raining forest on a photo excersion.

We need to determine how long we are going to wait in front of chapters for. There maybe some stragglers. I am thinking max 15-30 min before heading down to Granville island.

its pretty crazy how much gear people were carrying around. Senna, Boostslut, and Mashimaro brought tripods, while Senna had some crazy gear. Couple 7D and alot of L gear. Plus the nikkon shooter (matusda).

That tilt-shift was pretty awesome! Funny thing is i could buy 3 of them for the price of my 500L and i didn't bring to the walk around, that was in my trunk though! Lots of nice gear defiantly though! Overall fun day!

I went to John Oliver too, but I think he means the Downtown Eastside/Chinatown area lol! East Vancouver isn't ghetto as most people think. Heck I still live in the area, with the occasional drug busts, shootings, hookers walking around.....
