| do tattoos belong in the workplace?
i did a search but couldn't find anything.
i'm looking to get my tattoo. i'm looking to get a 3/4 sleeve done. do you think it is a good idea to get a tattoo that extends into the forearms? or is this something more specific to certain industries? do you think i'd be able to be okay with just wearing long sleeves from now on? the tattoo has a special meaning to me so if possible, i'd prefer to leave it the same size.

It's something that is between you and your employer. Doesn't matter if means anything to you, or it's an armful of tribal. So talk to them about it, not us.

^fair enough but what i was maybe hoping for if any of you guys had any past experiences with tattoos and the workforce (i guess i should of phrased it a little more clear). i'm currently working in the fitness industry which is pretty accepting of body art but i'm not sure if this is the field i'd want to be working in for the rest of my life.
there is just so much uncertainty in life and i don't want to risk jeopardizing anything before being fully educated and know exactly what i'm getting into.

If you're the type who plans on being a 9-to-5er in an industry where it's deemed unacceptable, then simply don't get one in a visible place.
What you are getting into is something that literally lasts the rest of your life |

Q: Do tattoos belong in the workplace?
A: No - leave them at home when you go to work.

you'll probably end up in an office where you have to wear shirts so a tattoo like that shouldn't matter
but if not, then a half sleeve would be a safer choice

Most time it's probably not an issue. If it does cause any problems it might be that initial interview and getting stereotyped by someone that's close minded. It shouldn't effect most jobs because even professional offices a sleeve can be covered by a button up shirt if need be.

What if he made it through the interviews and probation with long sleeves, then started wearing shorter sleeves? If he wasn't dealing with nor around customers, wouldn't it be discriminatory to get rid of him if his perfomance was up to par?
I actually got let go from a warehouse job for having an eyebrow ring (back when they weren't so common). Now I see so many people at the same company with piercings.
Fortunately, I'm in an industry where production, work ethic and a good attitude are waaaay more important that appearance.

Bottom line - it all depends. There is no right or wrong answer other than "it all depends."

For work I'd err on the side of conservative, especially if your employer don't know you that well.
Being an individual is one thing, but I'd prefer being a cleancut worker getting paycheque than a tattooed unemployed bum waiting for EI cheques.
Now if you're your own boss, be my guest!! LOL who knows maybe you'll think twice about hiring workers who wear Ed Hardy shirts at work and intimidates all your customers??
