Honda Motor Co. (HMC) Friday announced a voluntary worldwide recall of 646,000 compact cars so that it can examine window switches that can overheat if exposed to liquid, causing smoke or melting or even catch fire.

Only about 10% of the Fit hatchbacks recalled will need replacement switches, with the remainder requiring the fitment of waterproof skirts to prevent water seeping in.

"Under some severe operating conditions, water, rain, or other liquid may enter the driver's window and reach the master power window switch, resulting in impaired function of the switch," the Japanese car maker said in a statement. "If the master power window switch is damaged as a result of the liquid intrusion, it may result in failure of the switch and overheating.

"An overheating switch may cause smoke, melting or, potentially, fire," it added.

The recall affects models built in Japan, China, Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia and India. Of the vehicles being recalled, 171,372 are in the U.K., where the model is known as the Jazz, 141,140 are in the U.S. and 229,000 are in Latin America.

Honda's recall comes as Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) this week halted sales of its most popular models in North America in response to growing concerns that possible defects to accelerator pedals may cause vehicles to speed up unintentionally. Toyota Wednesday expanded its recall to Europe and on Thursday to China.

The recall affects 2007 and 2008 models.

Faulty power switches could leave windows partially open, causing water to leak inside. This caused two fires in the U.S. and one in South Africa.

"In some cases there has been reported smoke. We didn't have that in Canada," said Richard Jacobs, a Honda Canada spokesperson.

Affected customers will be informed by mail. If they experience problems in the meantime, they can take the car to their dealer for replacement parts.

What we should pay attention to is the frequency/total number of recalls and the kinds of recalls they are making.

A recall for a sticking window is very different than an sticking gas pedal.

I knew about the recall. But I thought it was something to do with the power windows. The passenger side window on our fit gets jammed and does not completely open.

Seriously, some stuff I had to go in for were kind of scary like:

-Fuel rail lines might crack and cause engine fires (WTF)
-Airbags may not deploy in cold temperatures (I might need them if I'm sliding on ice!)

Worst part is that it probably happened to some poor soul first :(

Mitsu back then also had awesome recalls:

- 2G DSM together with Galant 7G possible lower balljoint failure. You are likely to drop a front wheel just by driving in the city (could be worse, like on the freeway) LOL.

in which Mitsubishi hid the problem for a long time, got found out, and almost went bankrupt for it.

- Mitsubishi Fuso possible fire hazard
- Mitsubishi EVO (you know about those already)

Also the brainfart idea of GDI before the material engineering department came up with the appropriate material and motors for the high pressure system is also rofl.

In doing a lil more research, since the story interested me, the child was strapped in a car seat(sleeping) and had just returned home from grocery shopping for her 2nd birthday party. Her parents left her in the car while they were taking groceries into the house.

the parents can be blamed, but still pretty bad for a car to catch on fire...

in conclusion to my but up top there to this post...you should NEVER leave ur kid in the car regardless if your taking in groceries or not..take the kid in first kinda of a common sense move...take ur kid inside where you know their safe or leave them in the car till u go to get groceries where you dunno if some bum or something is eyeing ur car seeing if he can jack it/ steal ur kid or something
