HK Cafe Fans: Pineapple Bun w/Butter
bcrdukes

Hey folks,
Something has been bothering me for a while now and I need to get it off my chest. The other day, I was at an HK style cafe in Richmond and I saw two of the most skinniest and anorexic stick figured Hongers in my life chow down on a fresh pineapple bun with a slab of butter. Yes, that's correct - a slab of butter!
Okay. Seriously, who in their right mind does this? That is disgusting! A little butter, okay - fine. But a huge ass freakin' slab of butter? That makes no sense. Is this normal in HK or something? If so, why?
Please help. I am having a hard time understanding this....cultural phenomenon. Thanks.

Direct translation would be "Pineapple Oil"
It's one of the ways hongers enjoy fresh oven-made Pineapple bun by slicing the bun in half then putting a thick slice of butter in it.

TBH the butter won't make you fat, it's the bun that will!
Unfortunately most places tend to use slabs of margarine, not butter, which defeats all the goodness that butter has.
Butter is great stuff, whenever I use it I always cut off a piece and just eat it whole.

Yes!
This is where I saw it! I was having breakfast with my lady friend and beside us (the communal sharing table) these two skinny Hongers were chowin' down on this baw law yau. I was betting my lady friend they weren't going to eat the whole thing with the entire slab of butter but nope - I was wrong and had to cover the tab. :(

Don't know about the health factors, but a fresh pineapple bun with butter is really good. I usually get one every 2 months. I try not to eat them more frequent than that.
In fact, I just had one today at the Boss in Metrotown.
If you try it in HK, a fresh bun with butter and a nice cold milk coffee or a dong yeen yen. Heaven.

From what I know, which is very limited, Lido is one of the few restaraunts/cafe that still gives a large slab of solid butter with their pineapple buns. This is how it's supposed to be like, even in Hong Kong, no?
According to my aunt, the real deal is a cold solid slab of butter, none of the individually packaged packs of soft butter.

The bun has to be warm and fresh. The crust on the top has to be crispy.
The butter has to be cold and thick.
Put it in the bun and eat it when it melts half way.
OMG, goodness in your mouth.
Don't ruin it by melting the butter in the bun until it turns all to oil.

You don't need to go to a restaurant to try this. Just go to a Chinese bakery and buy home a block of butter from the store. But the bun has to be reheated by an oven

Please explain how every greek is fat, when they eat very LITTLE carbs. Infact the greek diet is mostly VEGETERIAN and FULL OF PROTEIN AND SATURATED FATS.
Please. Seriously once I get back down to my target weight I will do your EXACT diet for 30 days that you want me to do and I WILL PROVE TO YOU that I will gain weight.
SkinnyPupp

I'm not familiar enough with 'real' Greek cuisine to comment on that. If Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_cuisine) is accurate however, it's pretty easy to see why Greeks get fat. Pretty much every side dish is stuffed with copious amounts of rice or bread, and a lot of it is deep-fried (presumably in vegetable oil, which is bad)
Also keep in mind that people are different. Some people tolerate carbs just fine (like my wife, who can eat as many carbs as she wants and won't get fat) while others (like myself) so much as smell carbs their insulin starts storing fat).
Because it's insulin (well it's more complicated than that obviously, but that's the basic idea) that makes you fat, not fat. How your body handles insulin is what determines how fat you are. With dietary fat however, we all handle it the same. So one person may or may not get fat from insulin, they aren't necessarily going to do so from actual fat (within moderation of course).
...
Anyway, if you're ever in HK and want a good pineapple bun with butter, check out Tsui Wah. They use real butter from New Zealand (so they are grass-fed cows) and they keep the butter on ice, so it stays hard. Go early though, it sells out every day and is usually gone by the afternoon.

Processed foods are the devils, not carbs.
It's the sudden intake of corn syrup/sugar/white breads that are making people fat, not whole wheats.
I agree that saturated fats are fine, since french/greeks eat a shitload of them, and we have very long life expectancy but at 100 most people are hefty!
SkinnyPupp
02-01-2010, 04:52 AM
The additional processed carbs are definitely to blame for how obese people are getting, but whole wheat isn't much better for you, in terms of the insulin spike you get from it.
For most people, simply avoiding the real junk is all they need to do. But if you simply replace them 1:1 with so-called "healthy" grains, you are going to be just as fat.
I guess it's a good thing "healthy" grains taste so bad, so it's pretty much impossible to eat as much of them ;)

I'd honestly feel truly sorry for you if you couldn't go through life enjoying a deserts, a slice of fresh baked bread, good cheese and a bottle of wine because your worried about a simple insulin spike.
Also "define" replace. Portion sizes have increased in the past 20 years. And people now eat past the limit of being satisfied.
PS: Healthy grains actually taste quite good, although I do enjoy a nice crusty baguette once in a while.

Who's saying not to eat desserts or fresh baked bread? Would you live off those? I assume not.
Also, despite what may be common belief, portion sizes haven't increased in the last 20 years, they have decreased. Dietary fat has decreased as well. And also during the last 20 years, Exercise has increased. But people are getting fatter. Wonder why?
All I am saying is, eat properly and you can enjoy some junk once in a while. The difference is knowing what is actually junk and what isn't. We all know ice cream and pizza are bad for you. And "healthy" ice cream and "healthy" pizza are usually even worse, because they take out the good (the fat), leave in the bad (the sugar/starch) and add more bad (more sugar/starch to replace the fat).
By knowing how your body handles insulin spikes, you can determine how often and when you can get away with eating junk. Lowering overall calories by way of fat isn't going to do a damn thing for you, in terms of health or physique.

Just dont stuff yourself with this pineapple bun with butter before bed time. The old saying goes something like this:
"Eat breakfast like a king and dinner like a pauper"
I watched this documentary on the body clock and explained insulin normally peaks in morning and is lowest as evening progresses. Bad to have all those excess glucose floating around in your blood since no insulin around to decrease the level.

It comes out with the butter inside already like this:
http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/3078/02022010018.jpg
You absolutely have to eat it right away. You will realize that when the butter melts inside the bun and then you eat the bun, it just doesn't taste as good as having the butter "squirt" into your mouth as you feel the texture and taste with your tongue. Basically, what other people said is true; the colder the butter they use, the better as it stays intact inside the warm bun much better allowing for an elevated oral experience.

If you're ever in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Lin has great fresh buns - when you go there to eat, they are constantly bringing them from the kitchen yelling things like "bolo bao, chut lo!"
They are fresh, and HUGE, and they use real lard (not shortening) and real butter (not margarine)
Mine today was good, but unfortunately they don't pack on enough butter. Especially considering how big the buns are (I can't finish a whole one myself). Next time I'll ask for more ;)
Oh and their curry beef brisket is awesome, as is their milk tea and coffee. Lo mein is good too. Their other dishes are hit-and-miss.

Not all places have great buns here. 90% of the population goes to the chain bakeries - St Honore, Maxims, Tai Pan, Kee Wah, etc. They all suck, for the most part. They use shitty ingredients (shortening, margarine, etc) and aren't as fresh (they make them at one location and ship them out to the stores.
You have to find the restaurants that do their own baking, and use proper ingredients to get good buns like this. The one I mentioned was great. There is also this little 'hole in the wall' place in Kwun Tong we go to. The guy bakes all day with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and his big fat pregnant looking belly hanging out. But he makes great buns, and they are cheap ($5 HKD for any 3 buns - that's about $0.75 CAD).
Stay away from the shiny looking places that are packed with 9-to-5ers during rush hour trying to spike their blood sugar to be able to make the trip home. Find a local bakery, and you will get good buns.
As far as Richmond goes, IIRC, Kam Do was always good (at least for their lo por bang) and there was another in that strip mall between aberdeen and parker place that was good (their cocktail buns were great).

There's no pineapple. The name comes from the pattern of the 'pei' (skin/top), which is supposed to look like the outer surface of a pineapple.

Anyone feel that the Lido Pineapple Bun seems like nothing at all? I mean, there really is no difference before eating and after eating it. There seems to be very little material inside.. Get what i mean? It tastes very good though, just not very satisfying.
On another hand, you guys should try Happy Date Bakery across from RC, no. 3 side. It has, imo, the best Pineapple Bun in Vancity. Their food is also not bad, very inexpensive.
While you guys are on that mall, make sure u try Torarenbo. It's a japanese restaurant with set bento lunches. Less than $10, and you get rice, loads of beef, sushi, tempura. goddamn!

I think so, especially for tourists since they have clearly-written English menus. IMO they have great baked pork chop, great curry, good fish soup stock and fish balls. Their 'sizzling grills' are HUGE and good too (well the chicken and pork chop are good).
Another good one I recently tried is Kai Kee in Mong Kok. It is a huge restaurant, has a HUGE menu with a lot of pictures and English, and pretty good food from the 2 dishes we tried. We'll go back for sure. Here's the Google Maps location (they have one in TST as well, I believe)

Went back to Kai Kee in MK for a mixed grill:

They get an A for quantity, but a C- for quality.
It had steak, chicken steak, pork chop, a grilled prawn, sausage, bacon, some cabbage, and tomato. Also includes a bun, soup, and cold drink. All for about $9 CAD.
The chicken steak and pork chop were fine. The sausage and bacon were what you'd expect. The prawn wasn't fresh at all. The beef was so disgusting I didn't eat it after one bite.
But 3 of the 4 dishes we had there were very good, so I'll go back. I want to try their baked chicken steak :)
