because 38% of richmond's population speaks chinese as their native language..and that was 4 years ago.

the census is not done every year. i think it's done every 4 yrs so that is probably the most updated data.

Do they lump mandarin and cantonese all together? Or is mandarin considered part of "other"? If so, "other" is going to be a lot bigger in the 2010 census. Every summer I come back to Richmond, I see more mainlanders spitting on the ground and making a mess in restaurants.

being able to speak ENGLISH / french should be mandatory to get citizenship. enough of being able to take ur exam in other language / or interpreters

A lot of HK ppl left cuz of the lack of jobs. And the fact that HK remained independent from China soothed the fear of 97. There r pretty much no reason, other than better weather, not to return

The real answer: Because they make news more interesting to watch and laugh. (Besides the naked news.)
Hell, you don't even have to be Asian to understand most of their short cg film.
