: Polar Bears contribute to self-extinction

caught my eyes when i was reading the papers today, came online just to search for pics and apparently it's a 2 month old news. I cant find good articles online but pretty much the account from the photographers was that a female bear was trying to prevent 2-3 male bears from eating her cub but failed.

yeah yeah big deal it's just a few dead cubs...but i wonder if this behaviour among the bear population will increase in this decade.

Faced with a shrinking habitat in Canada's Arctic, polar bears are increasingly turning on their own kind in an act of hungry desperation.

According to Manitoba Conservation, at least four cases of polar bear cannibalism have been confirmed in the northeastern Manitoba community of Churchill this year. Several more cases are being investigated.

Scientist Andy Derocher, who has spent more than 25 years studying polar bears in the Western Hudson Bay area, said the water usually freezes by mid-November, allowing the bears to drift away from the main land and hunt seals.

Warmer than normal temperatures this year have delayed that, he said.

"The cannibalism events are really just a manifestation of the effects of global warming on the bears," Derocher said. "It's an act of desperation; it's what they do when they can't find something else to eat."

Why don't the researchers that love polar bears so much go and get some seals for the bears? :P

I thought male bears would attack cubs anyway. Thats why theyre always with the mothers.

At least thats what they said in the Long Way Round docu. Or i heard wrong

It's sad to see. But I'm sure us human have no problem eating our own kind as well when we run out of food someday.

Desperate, ill-conditioned human beings can be even worse. God help
us all on this violent planet.

It's a known issue with grizzle bears, even in B.C.
Did a study on it last semester, the term is infanticide.

Once a male mates with the female, the male becomes solo again and goes to find other females to mate with. Therefore spreading their genetics to as many viable offspring as possible.

Other males that see a mother with cubs that aren't their own, will kill the cubs in order for the mother bear to be willing to mate again since the current cubs are already dead.

Hence the polar bears are being "cannibals", however it's already been a know behavior in bears and is part of the natural selection process, this media article is just finding another way to hide from the fact that climate change is detrimental to bears

i think another article brought up the term, infantcide
it's a known behaviour but there's been more cases of it this year in the polar bear population. if incidence continues to increase along with the changing geographic/food chain patterns then it's pretty safe to assume the climate has a fairly significant impact

you!

Climate change happens with or without humans. Sure we have changed the climate, but we live and are part of the enviroment. This HAS become our lifestyle, just like an animal adapts and lives it's lifestyle. If the earth does not like it, it will simply change to elimate us. It's as simple as that.

Wonder if he had a coke cola afterwards...

In all seriousness though makes me kinda sad after watching Planet Earth on the BBC.

The ongoing urgency and importance of addressing climate change is due to the threat to mankind. Make no mistake, the planet Earth will still survive through this transition, however the inhabitants on it, including us, may not.

^ agree, the Earth doesnt care about global warming. It'll adjust and breed new lifeforms. Humans, on the other hand, r nowhere near as resilient as mother Earth

I saw pictures and it is pretty sad. Apparently cannibalism has gotten worse, part of the effect of global warming.

like some guy above said, it could be just infanticide.

Some monkeys do it. I read it in a sfu textbook
