Have you heard about the next planned version of The Apprentice?

Three businessmen and three businesswomen will be dropped in an Elementary school classroom for 6 weeks.

Each businessperson will be provided with a copy of his/her school district's curriculum, and a class of 28 students.

Each class will have five learning-disabled children, three with A.D.D., one gifted child, and two who speak limited English. Three will be labeled with severe behaviour problems.

Each business person must complete lesson plans at least 3 days in advance with annotations for curriculum objectives and modify, organize, or create materials accordingly.

They will be required to teach student, handle misconduct, implement technology, document attendance, write referrals, correct homework, make bulletin boards, compute grades, complete report cards, document benchmarks, communicate with parents, and arrange parent conferences.

They must also supervise recess and monitor the hallways. In addition, they will complete drills for fire, tornadoes, and shooting attacks.

They must attend 100 hours of workshops, faculty meetings, union meetings, and curriculum development meetings.

They must also tutor those students who are behind and strive to get their 2 non-English speaking children proficient enough to take their TAKS tests. If they are sick or having a bad day, they must not let it show. Each day they must incorporate reading, writing, math, science, and social studies into their program.

They must maintain discipline and provide an educationally stimulating environment at all times.

THe businesspeople will only have access to the golf course on the weekends, but on their new salary they will not be able to afford it anyway.

There will be no access to vendors who want to take them out to lunch, and lunch will be limited to 30 minutes. On days when they do not have recess duty, the businesspeople will be permitted to use the staff restroom as long as another candidate is supervising their class.

They will be provided with two, 40-minute planning periods per week while their students are at activity classes. If the copier is operable, they may make copies of necessary materials at that time.

The businesspeople must continually advance their education on their own time, and pay for the advanced training themselves. This can be accomplished by moonlighting at a second job or marrying someone with money.

The winner will be allowed to return to his or her job.

That can't possibly be the norm. I sure don't remember having five learning-disabled classmates and another three with ADD back in elementary school.

That is the maximum according to provincial standards. Not all classrooms will be represented as such, but FOR EACH OF THESE CLASSES, they are the maximum. Oh, and because the ministry operates on paperwork made by accountants, there is no "student has multiple issues" section, so teachers have to pick the most relevant one to slot each student into.

I imagine first/second year teachers get killed, but after that, its would get easier and easier (because you lesson plan is set) and you just have to tweak to conform to the the altering curriculum.

Teaching is a hard job, no doubt, but every other profession is similar. Long hours outside of paid work time. Lots of paper work to show progress. But in the end, if you don't like it, quit. There are tons of teachers just itching to get a full time position.

Teachers are important people. But working in business isn't a walk in the park either. It's not all golf and free lunches.

If you want, I can write also write a big long essay complaining about how many hours per week I have to work and the garbage I deal with. And how I don't get pro-days or summers off.

I always thought teachers retired because of mandatory retirement rules. And when are they going to give these guys their 2 weeks off in the winter, 1 week off in the spring, and 2 months off in the summer?

I thought the provincial maximum for designated students in a single class was three. ADD, ADHD, and behaviour students don't count unless they are designated. And this is only after they have gone through district screening. Know this stuff, because wife used to be involved with the PAC, DPAC and Provincial PAC. The only exception is when the teacher signs off on the extra numbers. It's like the maximum class size rule. It can be waived if the teacher agrees to it. Of course, some kind of compensation is involved (back room deal with administrators - extra time off, TA's, more prep time, etc.)

Also, is this television show in the US? If so, their educational system is quite different from ours.

But they are not enrolling teachers. They are specialists. Not in charge of a regular class. Also, there cannot be a class with more than 30 kids. Slight differences between elementary, middle, and secondary schools.

So the ESL teacher sees thses kids at different times of the day. Not all at once. Perhaps 10 for an hour, five the next, etc. Some teach same kids every day, while other kids are only seen a few times in a week.
