: 2003 Eclipse or 2000 Grand Am Coupe

Might be needing a new car since ICBC writing off the current one as a total loss...

I've seen two cars that I like so far..

A 2003 Eclipse with 76000 kms for $6000.
No Accidents but it is a Out of province car (Alberta)

or a 2000 Grand Am Coupe
83000 kms but needs a bit of work for $3200.
Here's the ad for the Trans Am

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/cto/1600836152.html

Is there any known problems for the eclipse and trans am?
Which one would you prefer?
Or any other 2 door or 2 seaters that you'd think would be best... something under $7000.
Thanks

thats not a trans am

and really, i wouldn't touch that grand am, but then again, any car for that kind of money isn't going to be free of issues

honestly, just go look at them, get them tested by a mechanic, and then make an informed decision - we can't help you with such little info

*Grand Am

Yeah I'll check them out but my main question as mentioned in my previous post above is that are there are known problems that are have had recalls or anything that is consistently reported for the same make/model

More importantly whats your budget?

Wow... confusing a Grand Am with a Trans Am... mega fail!

If you don't know the difference between a 4 cyl and a V8... better stick with a Honda!

edit: yes, I know the Grand Am in the ad is a V6... but it feels like a 4 cyl, because the Grand Am is a heavy bitch.

what model of eclipse is it? V6 or I4

http://www.club3g.com/forum/problem-reports/114874-common-3g-problems.html
a thread on some common eclipse problems, although i've never had any unusual problems in the 3 years of owning my eclipse

also if you have the money and some mechanical know-how, you can do a lot of upgrades to both the I4 or the V6 such as DOHC swap from the evo8 or turbo set up for the V6 so my vote goes for the eclipse

Mitsu isn't for the weak of hearts.... You own a car with a very Japanese marque that you can't even read properly but it depreciates like an American car.

Stay away from the Grand Am....possibly one of the worst cars ever made imo. Had one and the tranny blew at 60,000k wouldnt go into reverse. Why do u think GM is bankrupt....from producing shit cars like the grand am.
Id rather walk, take the bus or ride a bicycle than drive that POS...lol

that has to be the worst Eclipse interior I have ever seen, keep searching there are much better eclipses out there unless u plan on stripping the interior and reverting it abck to stock or at least something better

Well thing is I'm on a tight budget now, my car got written off by ICBC and they only gave me $5600, which I am in the process of arguing for a better price right now. So now I would have to lower my standards of $7000, I'm looking for more or less of a "trade" and this car seemed like good condition, and low KMS.

my tl's tranny was a pos from factory because of a design flaw and was changed out at 80k, i also have no idea how long the current one will last. whats your point again?

2000 Mitsubishi Galant V6 ES

Whats with the totally different type of cars?

Well, the main thing I'm looking for is 2 door, mainly so people can't keep jumping in my car. I have a N license and am now getting tired of people jumping in asking for rides home.

I would rather take the bus than drive the Eclipse or Grand Am.

You need to be specific on what your "style" is.

wtf that interior..... can you live with that?

that car looks like someone stripped down as much as possible to stock with whatever oem parts the owner could scrounge together. past experience would imply shoddy reassembly (eg. duct tape and wood screws).

if this eclipse and that grand am are your only choices... public transit gets my vote.

What are you exactly asking? is the Eclipse 3G a "good car"? . . .

btw I'd just point out, most people that ask people on the internet choose a car for them, 90% that person won't even get one... just saying.

Don't expect to get any sports car under $7,000 that doesn't have mileage...

Might as well just buy a Jetta....
if you are a man maybea 2G eclipse GSX / GST... for that money.

Don't expect to get any good car under $7,000 that doesn't have mileage.

1) Yeah I'm asking if its a reliable one, and if there are any known problems on the car, any major recalls, etc. For example my 2000 Galant had known electrical problems, which was something I cautioned and checked out when I went to see the car.

2) I absolutely need a car, with a car written off, why would I not get one?

3) My 2000 V6 Galant only had 74 kms on it and I bought it for $7000.
The Eclipse in the ad has 76 kms and is selling for $6000

SpuGen

Definitely not domestic.

Japanese two doors newer than 2000

Then wtf were the Eclipse and Grand Am doing in there?

These cars are the farthest thing from Japanese, and are pretty much just Domestic.

Front / Rear wheel drive?
Sporty? GT?
I4 / I6 / V6 / V8

You say you want a Japanese 2 door, but you've shot them down one by one.
Are you sure you don't want a Domestic?

hchang
02-17-2010, 06:12 PM
I've only shot down domestics... I said the Celica has high KMs and would now search for one with lower kms if possible.

Grand Am was there before I decided to take it out of question as you would be able to see in the above posts.

FWD 4 Cyl 2.0 ish engine. Last car was a V6 and really had no big need for it.

hk20000
02-17-2010, 06:33 PM
and you shot down the Civic SiR. which at your price range is as good of a Japanese import as it is going to get. Or are you one of those retarded people that says "no honda" because of its image but never looked at what they are?

how about Integra GSR or something then?
I don't know why you think having 2 doors less make your car less likely to get jumped by your friends for rides home because either way you are getting something with 4 seats. If I need a ride I wouldn't give a flying fuck if you have 4 doors or 2 doors as long as I can sit down for the ride.

here is an exhaustive list of 2 door vehicles from any Japanese manufacturer from 2000 onwards remotely close to your price range.

Acura
Integra GSR
RSX base model
Honda
Civic coupe
Civic hatchback
Accord Coupe
Lexus
NO ARE YOU SERIOUS!?
Mazda
Miata
Mitsubishi
Eclipse
Nissan
NOTHING
Subaru
NOTHING
Toyota
Celica GT
Solara

how hard is it to choose ONE car out of this list when you already taken out Civic (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/1605539768.html), Celica (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/cto/1605932171.html)?

What you have left here is:
most reasonable choice: Integra GSR (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/bnc/cto/1595784340.html) or RSX base (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/bnc/cto/1588286141.html)
most Asian choice: Accord Coupe (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/bnc/cto/1598748909.html)
most fun choice: Mazda Miata (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/1598090456.html)
most depreciating choice: Mitsubishi Eclipse (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/rds/cto/1579528961.html)
most gay choice (tie with Mazda Miata, of course): Solara (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/cto/1602450672.html) 0 (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/cto/1558617441.html) 1 (http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pml/cto/1578093845.html)

Statement of Limitation
Vehicle Status
B.C.-registered vehicles may have a status of normal, rebuilt, salvage or altered. A normal status does not mean the vehicle has never been damaged or is in good mechanical condition.
Vehicle status records are obtained from the B.C. vehicle registry at the date and time of a VIN search. Any changes to a vehicle's status after that date will change the information shown.
The status may not represent the vehicle accurately if, for example:
• A written off vehicle has not been reported to the B.C. vehicle registry

A vehicle wrecker or recycler has not reported a vehicle that has been decommissioned

A vehicle with major damage was repaired by its owner
• An insurer denied a claim, or the policyholder did not follow through with a claim
• A vehicle was recently "totalled", but the registry hasn't been updated yet
• A vehicle imported to B.C. (either from Canada or the U.S.) had an incorrect status in the jurisdiction it came from
ICBC Vehicle Claims History
This is a report of the vehicle damage and repairs paid by ICBC at the date and time the report is issued. Any claim payments and adjustments made after that date will change the information shown.
Only information from ICBC - not other insurance companies - is reported.
A report may be incomplete or show "NO DETAILS" if:
• Past damage went unreported to ICBC. (This could happen if:
• the vehicle was not insured by ICBC at the time the damage occurred;
• the owner repaired the vehicle at their own expense;
• the owner did not make a claim to ICBC.)

ICBC denied a claim or the vehicle owner did not follow through with a claim.

The vehicle was insured under an ICBC fleet or garage policy.
• Damage has occurred, but ICBC has not yet paid out any amounts with respect to the damage.

ICBC does not make any representations as to whether repairs detract from or add to a vehicle or its value.
To have as complete a picture as possible of a vehicle's condition, have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.
This ICBC Vehicle Claims History Report is NOT FOR RESALE and should only be obtained directly from ICBC, an Autoplan Broker, or a motor vehicle dealer registered under the British Columbia Motor Dealer Act. No modifications are permitted. Reproductions are permitted only with authorization from ICBC.

Haoston?

Too funny, it's Karl's brother.

I think an Accord coupe would be a good choice, except that the V6 models are known for transmission issues. I hear 4-cylinders aren't plagued with the same transmission problems.

I'm not sure I like that specific example that you posted, the seller seems a little cheap, and based on his writing skills young/immature sounding. If the hood costs only $100 to replace at Mitchell Island why wouldn't he just do it. I'd rather buy from a seller who hasn't skimped on the care of his/her vehicle.

This Prelude is a little older but it seems to be well cared for:
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/cto/1609208367.html

This Altima seems like it could be a good deal, although I heard that early 2.5s had some head gasket issues. 2002 is the first year of that bodystyle so it may be a little buggy - but it would be quite the upgrade over the Galant imo.

A pricier car when new, but not sure about reliability. Shares its chassis with the Mitsubishi Carisma. Would definitely bargain lower due to dents.
